I have yet to find a game that does not work on linux.
Check out cedega on Ubuntu.
winxp is long gone from my pc and I haven't looked back on that slow ugly insecure os.
And I am a big gamer when I get the time.

I call your bluff.
Went to the Haory forums and couldnt find an answer.
Does Ubuntu run Microproses "Magic: The Gathering"?
Its the actual card game, not the stupid adventure or 3D action game.

I hate online gaming and dont like the idea of buying 'virtual' cards.

I've never really liked any of the Linux distros I've tried, too user unfriendly, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I'll give the live version a try, and if I like it, I'll see about getting it installed on my 30GB drive this weekend 🙂

The massive update has begun 4 pm EST
Wow, the Microsoft servers are at an absolute crawl.

Started at 4 pm EST and it is now 9:30 EST and only at 16% downloaded.

I have a 3 meg Cable Connection so it is not a bandwidth problem on my end.

It is beyond 12 hours now at 10 am EST the next day and the download is only 29%

27 hrs later and now only at 44%, this has to be a record.

If you scan around on the file-sharing networks you can find a 276 Meg executible for SP2.
Probably much faster than using MS, and you can burn it to a disc for future use.

OMG did you say a P2P file-sharing network??? Hurry send the RIAA/MPAA and the Feds.

When SP2 came out I waited. One month later, I tried it (allowed a chance for M$ not fix to breakage). SP2 screwed up the internet connections.
Rolled back to SP1 - Everything OK

Wow EagleKeeper, I thought you were smarter than that.

🙁

I updated to SP2, with 56k, I even got my CD from MS. When I installed it, my network card stopped working. Said it couldnt find a connection. I turn off MS firewall, I even turn off my ZA firewall. NO connection. Ok, so I go online, and download new drivers for my Linksys card. Install them. STILL no connection. I uninstall SP2 (by rolling back to SP1) all is well, connects to my home network just fine.

I chose my software carefully...too bad MS was it. I will continue to use SP1, since I dont use IE 6, or Outlook express. Firefox/Thunderbird for me.

Is a comparison to the Federal Government forcing people to get vaccinated (even if it violates their religious beliefs) valid?

No, because Microsoft is not forcing or pushing anything. The only thing they are doing is offering this update to all XP users that do not have it. The user can still configure AU to download and notify them when something is available to install.

Even if you have your AU set to download and install them at a specific time (3am by default), XP SP2 requires the user to accept a EULA before installing. If AU is set to install automatically, it will throw a UI prompting the user to accept the EULA before installing.

If you an admin of a large network, the same rules above apply if your clients are using AU. If you are using something like SMS, SUS or WSUS (which you should be on a large network), you can delay the install of XP SP2 or any other patch indefinitely if you so choose.

The FUD on this subject is strong. I would suggest that people step back and actually look at what is happening, rather than having a knee-jerk reaction due to sensationlist journalism.

First time I've seen this thread, all I can say is, what the hell is wrong with you people?!! MS is not forcing ANYTHING. EVERYONE has the OPTION not to enable automatic updates. And for those who don't have a clue how to disable automatic updates... well those are the types of people WHO NEED THE UPDATES THE MOST!!!

So where's the problem with what MS is doing?

A couple of weeks ago my auto update got turned on (???) and ms downloaded sp2 while I was out of town. When I got back my internet access didn't work. After about 20 min. I found sp2 and dumped it. All OK again.

Last night I couldn't get updates to work. Thought it was because of some services I turned off. Went thru the services and turned them back on. Still no updates. Went over to Black Viper to read up on the various services. Closed for construction. Dang. Finally, I turned off my Panda firewall. Updates are ok again.

From what I'm reading here, it sounds like I'm going to have to install sp2, whether I like it or not, in order to get other updates. Guess it's time to get a cd from ms. I'll just keep turning off my firewall until then. I'll see how long that works.

I just au'ed two days ago, and when I restarted my computer at the end of the install, it wouldnt boot. Now it reboots after the "Windows" splashscreen goes away everytime I try to startup. Right now I am using my fedora core (lucky i was using dual boot, or i would have nothing right now). I am planning on reinstalling _just_ the os on the windows partition soon, but I cant find my install disk. I can still keep all my files and only reinstall the os using the disk, even though i cant get into windows right? or will i have to wipe the partition and start over? sigh... Time to go digging through all the junk in my closet.

What are you talking about "no one has been able to resolve"?

ZoneAlarm hasn't had an issue since version 5.0x

Update your software (for example, ZA is now Version 5.5), and you'll be fine.

Shouldn't have to do all this updating???? well then your computer shouldn't have to work.

With a fraction of the effort it takes for all this complaining, computers could be kept up to date.

PS: I'm glad MS is trying to limit the junk that spews from computers of users who are too lazy to take care of them

heh...How nice of M$ to force update peoples computers to SP2. People are sure to love this. I mean, who doesn't like it when their computer is force updated and $hit stops working?

It's probably hated by quite a bit less people than those who get bombarded with viruses, worms, and trojans by those who haven't updated to SP2 and the latest security patches.

People have a choice. They can whine about security problems with Windows or they can whine about forced upgrades.

Pick your poison.

Unfortunately SP2 has opened just as many holes as it closes, most worse than what they fixed.

There is an option. DISABLE Automatic Updates.

/me waves FUD flag (at LiLithTecH)

I think you spelled your moniker wrong ....
Shouldn't be - I n s i p i d o u s ??? 😀

Since most malicous activity is done via web browsing lets try this one.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for XP Service Pack 2 (KB890923)

I do not take issue with Microsoft.
They are the primary reason for keeping IT people employed.

I take issue with the BLOAT CODE they sell.
They need to scale it down and optimize better than currently.

It wasn't a link to the service pack I am curious about. I'm also not curious about the security holes SP2 works to close.

My doubt is justification for the statement that SP2 (paraphrased) opens as many security holes as it closes....

Link me to justification of that and let me put my flag away.... until then.... still she waves.

The original misstatement (edited from lie, I don't think your being malicious, just uninformed):
Unfortunately SP2 has opened just as many holes as it closes, most worse than what they fixed.

What you posted to prove your point:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for XP Service Pack 2 (KB890923)

The truth:

More FUD. The link you posted for is to address MS05-20. That exploit is on:

? Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

? Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2

? Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Service Pack 1 (Itanium)

? Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 (Itanium)

? Microsoft Windows Server 2003

? Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems

? Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (ME) Tested Microsoft Windows Components:

Your claim is that SP2 opens as many new holes as it's closes. You have yet to cite a single example.

Thank you for playing, please try again....

Bill
