How is putting a cd in selecting us language and selecting "dektop computer" too hard?
Right after first boot everything works for me even video card drivers. (which I can't say for windows)
Firefox, all that stuff. If your into email and websufing and some pic editing it is much easier then windows and
nicer looking and no stupidly high ripoff fees to just use your computer, viri etc. *shrugs* what distro are you using?
sounds like debian or something more geared toward techies anyway.

Using a computer involves more than just installing an OS. Eventually even the best distro is going to require Joe L. User to edit some funky file because his bargain Firewire card from some shack in Sri Lanka won't work, he's going to need to delve into his XFree86 configuration, or he wants to install some program that's not really made for his distro and ends up frustrated because he can't figure out which libs he needs.

I heard people like you back in the late 90's talking about how wonderfully easy Linux was to use and those that couldn't just had to be idiots (While I actually used Linux and knew better, because I had invested mucho time reading I don't know how many friggin man pages).

While it's gotten better it still has a long row to hoe before it's RfP.

And finding obscure windows drivers and possibly editing the registry is less difficult?
It all depends on if you are a power user or not.
Seriously I game daily and I have not touched my xorg.conf (xfree is pretty much old news which is what makes me suspect it's been awhile for you.)

If I want to change res or refresh or change my monitor or AA AF nvidia digital vibrance.
I right click on the desktop a use the GUI. (even my mobo sound has nvidia control panel like windows)
Seriously try a up to date distro. It is much more friendly then windowsXP unless your are tweaking a apache server or something. (but then you are NOT a regular user nor would windows be the best way to go anyhow)
A regular user needs nothing but a menu and point and click.
I can see no situation where everything on my PC isn't easily accesed from a few clicks of a brightly colored and well labeled icon. I mean C:\ what kind of crap is that to a new user?
The only reason it's not mainstream to you is becasue you learned windows already.
Try newest mandrake of fedora core 3 -much easier to use and far more eye appealing to a regular user then windows.
Seriously they sell linux desktops at kmart now and users are just fine and get far more apps thrown into the deal already installed and working out of the box. (no 50$ norton 30$ spyware 300$ office applicatons that need to be installed.)
Awesome price too without the M$ bloat tax.
And then 64 bit CPUs are really nice too I have athlon 64 why not USE the damn thing 😉

I work in a PC shop with high daily traffic, I deal with windows problems from normal users countless times daily.
The regular users LOVE the cheapo linux boxes
1. -they just work
2. No slowdowns from IE
3. -the GUI looks nice like a mac at a fraction of the cost

XP is a overpriced viri/spyware ridden piece of dead dogmeat the word is out:
windows sucks after this last few rounds of spyware people ASK me for alternatives daily.

yeah, you just crack it and d/l patches individually. They are getting scared and they are going to shoot themselves in the foot becasue
the only people they are actually annoying are the regualr users who actually paid them.
Anyone pirating it has been all along and is used to this BS. It just turns people on to linux, good for them for not having to steal and bad for M$ who wasen't losing anything anyway but is losing their stranglehold on proprietary standards as more apps read any type of file pretty much.

Everyone should call MS and say fine,I'll update to SP2. Now mail me the CD with the update.

Let MS face the prospect of mailing out several MILLION CD's to fix their OS and see if they start singing a different tune.

I see you didn't read the thread. Microsoft has been doing that for free for quite some time. I even posted the link in one of the first few posts! To save you time, here is my post again:

Microsoft will sent it on CD free, heck Microsoft even pays for shipping.

Nope,I didn't read your reply, but your not the original poster who's thread I did read. Whatever...Glad to see MS now sends updates out 100% free of charge because they didn't use to,they gave you the CD and charged a ridiculous amount for shipping--kinda like buying on Ebay.

Maybe this comes as part of the DOJ settlement? Glad is was filed, they should send fixes out for free when it amounts to huge files.

heh...How nice of M$ to force update peoples computers to SP2. People are sure to love this. I mean, who doesn't like it when their computer is force updated and $hit stops working?

Honestly, you should upgrade to SP2 anyway. It's a HUGE improvement over SP1 and prior.

However, I WILL say this: DON'T do an upgrade install. Slipstream your CD (and preferably nLite the sucker to get rid of extraneous components you don't use) and install your machine FRESH for best results.

Jason

Do you really get better results, or is it just placebo?

So, my mom's computer will just shut down? She has dial-up...hmm. That's not gonna fly too well.
Like has been said before, just don't update it or follow the link I posted to have Microsoft mail you a CD with the update for free (even free shipping).

Honestly, I think its a good move. There are so many people out there without SP2 or even SP1 installed it's just ridiculous.

It isnt like Microsoft is forcing updates all the time, but I'm sure the time and energy spent fixing problems associating with lacking security is of greater concern than those with products that STILL aren't compatible with SP2...

I mean, its been six months.

Wow, the Microsoft servers are at an absolute crawl.

Started at 4 pm EST and it is now 9:30 EST and only at 16% downloaded.

I have a 3 meg Cable Connection so it is not a bandwidth problem on my end.

Is a comparison to the Federal Government forcing people to get vaccinated (even if it violates their religious beliefs) valid?
Given the nature of worms, viruses etc, I think it makes sense for people to keep their computers as protected as possible.

The day I give up video games is the day I make a complete move to Linux.
From that point on, life will be simple.

But I grew up in the Nintendo Generation, and I still have bad guys to stop.
Max Payne and Duke Nukem need my help.

I have yet to find a game that does not work on linux.
Check out cedega on Ubuntu.
winxp is long gone from my pc and I haven't looked back on that slow ugly insecure os.
And I am a big gamer when I get the time.

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ they even send you out a disk for free all my hardware works after reboot no drivers except the nv ones if your a gamer.
apps install with gui all in one window, no searching the web for apps or cracks.
If someone can actually find a valid reason besides not using ubuntu yet I'd like to hear it.
sp2 my ass...why? when ubuntu is so sweet, like I said my GF won't touch a windows box now even and really digs the app installs. whenever she wants something just search the package app click install...it just works.

check out http://distrowatch.com/ ubuntu has grown to be #1 almost overnight, windows is for the aol/spyware n00bs or those not in the know yet imo.
Cedega and xorg on ubuntu bench about 2 fps diffrence in games versus my old windows install. And that is emulated
I wouldn't suggest it if you have ati though. ati's drivers for xorg (the current linux gui base) are teh suxx0r.
You have nv your golden though almost the same performance and best of all no m$ hassles and lame factor.

You ain't alone, I have a PC with SP2, and it runs fine, that is after I got that stupid and lame firewall beat back into its hole. But laptop will not even boot with SP2. Fortunately safemode worked and I was able to roll back SP1.

I could even accept M$'s position on SP2 if it was worth a poop, and didn't crash 1 in 10 machines, and the firewall was slightly more than a cruel joke on users. I look at SP2 firewall as I look at TSA security at the airport. ineffective but it gives those that don't pay attention a FALSE sense of security.

OT but could someone give me a link to a good place to start learning about linux? I'd really like to get started with it. Thanks a bunch!

head to http://ubuntulinux.org/download/ and grab one of the new iso for ubuntu (the newest version hoary hedgehog -I do not know what is up with the names either lol- is out as of a few days ago) 🙂
It's pretty self explanatory and way easier to get running then xp with newer hardware. (you can install on a sata drive too!)

Use the http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/FrontPage wiki
and their forums have scads of how-to's most everything is point and click.
for example open package manager and search for nvidia and click install and you have newest drivers for gaming 3d acceleration and all...easy

Like I said before I wouldn't bother if you have ati though they haven't made drivers yet for xorg. I sold my ati card for NV and was so pleased at the basiclly same performance as windows I am waiting for my new 6600gt to arrive from the egg just for linux gaming on a nforce4 mobo.
I can't say enough good things about ubuntu I always thought linux was crap for gaming.
Now I couldn't imagine all the hassle of drivers updates and firefox install etc etc that comes with windows on my main gaming rig.

I fix infected and slow windows boxen for braindead n00bs all day and I will never have that pos OS at home ever again.

Indeed. That would be the ISPs fault not M$'s.

Your "S" key is broken, use it. Anyway, I neutral on this. It might cause problems for some people but it hasn't for me, so I have no complaints.
