Yeah, the right click context menu registry hack no longer works after the update.

What's wrong to give users options?

They might use them.

Having dealt with a fair bit of users, let me tell you, peoples creativity knows no bounds. Which isn't necessarily a good thing.

OK, /rant off

That feeling will pass, I assure you. Just give it time. At the moment, it’s still work in progress.

I usually jump right into Windows new releases. But this version looks like it takes away more than it adds. I'm reading elsewhere that you can no longer add a quick launch toolbar for instance .

Well, you can pin any app to the taskbar, isn’t it similar functionality?

No. With the quick launch every time you click on an icon (Chrome for instance) it opens a new window. With pinned apps, you haver to right click and click on it, and choose new window, to get a new window. Extra steps.

Wow, lots of fixes and known issues. Too long to list.

I recently was able to test it out by joining the insider program on a VM.

So far I think it's pretty good.

It seems like checking for updates and installing updates is faster which is great! That is one thing I was definitely hoping for.

I thought that the control panel would be fully integrated into settings but no such luck. I do like the new settings menu - seems more streamlined.

Can you not right click on the taskbar to bring up the task manager anymore? I never used a keyboard shortcut for it so I can't remember if there is one...

Also it keeps prompting for me to enable automatic sample submission in Defender even after I did it. Must be a bug.

Hope that they make some more major improvements before the final launch!

@SKORPI0

People trying it out in VMs don't get to feel the speed difference, though. Just the visual part.

They managed to break Haswell support somehow in this one (likely the iGPU acceleration). My speedometer score dropped from 135 (4790K @ stock with iGPU) down to 110 on this (65) build. The previous build (51) was on par with Windows 10 score (135). The whole UI felt a lot laggier since the update. Performance regression sucks. But since it's not supported, I guess, I can't complain.

I managed to also experience a lot more bugs than with the previous one. I don't get paid for this pain, so I went back to Windows 10 as a result. Got the speed back, no issues whatsoever. Will try the next dev iso once it's out, though. Fingers crossed.

NB. Looks like Windows 11 will be a must to extract full performance out of the upcoming Alder Lake platform, let alone the gaming features like DirectStorage/HDR/VRR.

You will be there, eventually :p

EDIT: Found the reason, as presumed above. There is also a regression with Kepler (w/ WDDM 3.0 support) as main GPU as well, so it's not exactly Haswell exclusive.

The last (71) build is another disappointment, sadly. I've even got more issues with it. They fix one thing, brake another. Ironically, I've had the best overall experience with Build 51.

You can't right-click and edit a text document, but you can rotate a picture, lmao.

Looks like DirectStorage API will be coming to Windows 10 as well as Windows 11.

Microsoft is committed to ensuring that when game developers adopt a new API, they can reach as many gamers as possible. As such, games built against the DirectStorage SDK will be compatible with Windows 10, version 1909 and up; the same as the DirectX 12 Agility SDK.

Pay attention to the L3 speed here.

That's on Ryzen 2700x and latest W11 Build. Likely a software bug, though.

The official Intel Windows 11 driver only supports Skylake and newer iGPU. Haswell iGPU performs significantly worse in Windows 11 as a result. Yeah, Nvidia is still the best in supporting legacy hardware (The 2012 Kepler has the official Windows 11 driver while the 2013 released Haswell does not, let alone the 2014 released Broadwell). AMD sadly, as always... is last to the party. I suspect, GCN 1.0-1.3 won't have it at all.

Regarding that AIDA64 benchmark. I thought that the hardware "move string of bytes" functionality of the CPU had been recently disabled / bypassed, due to potential exploits. What you're seeing may be "the new normal" and a result of that.

Or maybe just a timing / monitoring glitch, as you said.

The new 100 build brought a lot of the bug fixes as well as the Teams support. Not sure, why my 2D/Speedometer performance dropped down AGAIN with this build, but oh well :)
