Microsoft making a big mistake pushing 1080/60 on new Halo titles...

Exactly, Halo was never 60fps and doesn't need to be now. This is consolewars/marketing driven game development. It's easy to write "1080/60" it's not as easy to explain enhanced global illumination, parralax occlussion mapping, tessellation, foilage rendering distance etc...

Halo was also never designed with the XB1 in mind so I'm not sure how that makes your post valid in the least. The ability to run 1080p/60 is there now and those of us that actually own the XB1 will get to have a visually enhanced game with the pump in resolution/framerate.

Agreed. His excuse is "Halo wasn't in the past," but that basically says that the tech should never improve. He wants 900p here, but Halo was never 900p in the past, so we shouldn't do that, right? The Xbox was never Blu-Ray-capable, so Microsoft should have stuck with DVDs, right?

Halo wasn't 1080p/60 FPS because the hardware couldn't do it. Now that it can, it is. People are like, "the One needs 1080/60-capable hardware," then something comes out as 1080/60, and this guy's all "that's a mistake, drop the resolution and frame rate for lights and shadows."

Yeah, but all of those added features are expensive and beyond the scope of the remaster...
 
How about the Xbox One requires all games to render at 1920x1080 60 fps with at least 2s MSAA? I'd be happy with that.
 
Well, the games would still come. They would just not look 8th gen at all as fx and texture resolution would need to take a significant hit in order to maintain 1080/60+MSAA.
 
The xb1 is already kind of limited to begin with. It would be a mistake to require 1080p @ 60fps. It would really hinder the developer freedom. Some games are fine at below 1080p on consoles. I say let the developers decide what resolution and frame rate to aim for in their game.

They tried to force 720p + 4x MSAA on 360 when it launched which was pretty lofty. I'd say about 75% of 360 games hit native 720p, with probably less than 10% of those having 4x MSAA. Even Call of Duty 4 rendered at 600p on 360/PS3.

Ah yes, Halo was first introduced in 1997 as a Mac exclusive. Then Microsoft bought Bungie.
 
I saw someone say 60 fps isn't needed simply because Halo isn't a "twitch" shooter.

Said person is a poopy pants. 60 fps is quality of life more than anything else.

Ok, I'll make the same point... A "big mistake" would result in a negative impact. What exactly is that ramification? Lower sales? Lower customer satisfaction? Lower review scores?

Your personal enjoyment? Oh wait, do you even own an Xbox One???

Ryse is 900/30 because that gave Crytek the headroom needed to push next gen graphics. Ryse was seen by many as the best looking 8th gen game when it launched.

None of those Halo games are eighth-generation games, though. They're a re-release on a new console to give younger fans the story, not something to show off the technical might of the console or impress with visuals. It's about nostalgia and re-investing in the franchise for the new system.

Just remember that Microsoft got crap for going 1080p/60FPS on Forza 5, because it meant lesser visuals. Then remember that Microsoft got crap because Battlefield 4 went for visuals at 720p over 1080p. They lose either way. They get crap for resolution no matter what, while Sony didn't take any flak for not pushing 1080p on some games.

There isn't a "Microsoft would have done better to..." answer, when talking about resolution for games. They were going to take it up the butt from the biased media regardless. Unless they went and hand-delivered a new Xbox with a stronger GPU and faster RAM to every owner of the One, they'll continue to get crapped on because of pixel e-peen.
