Microsoft making a big mistake pushing 1080/60 on new Halo titles...

Halo has never been a 60 fps game on console and the gameplay doesn't necessite it so why start now? just to tick off a few marketing bullet points and cut back on rendering so the little gpu can manage a resolution+framerate it was never designed to sustain? The games would look so much better at 900/30 even on 1080 displays which usually scale image anyways due to built in overscan...

This conversation, if there ever actually was one, has been exhausted.

Oh great, another thread by futurefields.

FTFY

"This game sure looks worse at 1080p/60fps" said no one ever. They aren't taking the exact same content from Halo 2 and just upscaling it, you twit. They are "remastering" it.

Exactly, besides even if it was just a 60fps conversion of the engine it would be miles better than the original by default. The fact that they are actually digging into the textures, models, objects, lighting and all is fantastic.

You're wrong! It's a huge mistake.

900/30 would give them more headroom to push the graphics rendering further ie. better lighting, shadows etc...

as it stands a lot of gpu bandwidth will get eaten alive by their 1080/60 requirement. the games look good, but could look a lot better...

Maybe, but:

1. We're talking about revamping a decade-old title and the others in its series. Things aren't expected to be phenomenal, just substantially improved, which they are.
2. Imagine the anti-Microsoft media's shitstorm if this came out at something other than 1080p and 60 FPS. "The Xbox One's GPU is SO BAD that they can't even get the decade-old installments of their flagship franchise up to 1080/60!!!"

Funny thing is, if they did what you suggested, offering better textures and lighting at 900/30, you still would have made a thread, only it would have been the exact hypothetical I suggested in my second point. This thread was going to exist to complain about Microsoft in some form, because that's what you do. At least this route minimizes the tears of the media, even if the trolling from the diehard ant-Microsoft folks (like we can see here) will continue.

Well, they are not making a new engine so we don't know exactly what they can and cannot do with what they have there. So any speculation about "it would be better if..." means precisely zero.

Also never underestimate how 60fps improves a game. You would be on here bitching about 60fps if it wasn't...don't try to deny that.

nah i wouldnt

i lock many pc games at sub 60 so I can push the graphics

for example Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 I played at 36fps

On PC, if a game is running at 900p 30FPS, I'll react by tweaking settings until it runs at 1080p 60 FPS, assuming the display is 1080p. Well, by "60 FPS" I mean a range between 45 FPS mins and highs well over 60 FPS, where the average FPS is close to 60.

Often I can get there without the visuals taking a noticeable hit. Turning down shadow resolution a little, but keeping the shadow softening up a bit, a little Occlusion Culling, change a few effects from "very-high" to "high" or "medium"... and I'll squeeze out extra FPS, without making the game look noticeably worse. There's some seriously big diminishing returns on certain graphics settings.

I'd personally prefer if all my PS4 games had a 1080p 60 FPS target. The Halo collection is one of the only things I'm interested in on the Xbox One, and if they didn't have 1080p 60 FPS on this very important game collection, the small chance of me buying an Xbox One in the next year, would drop to zero chance.

Lol 30 fps fast action first person shooter... OP continues to show his lack of knowledge on ANYTHING but GTA (and even that is suspect). 🙄

and as stupid as the OP is and his threads are, halo is not a "fast action" (ie. twitch) first person shooter. it never has and never will be (hopefully).

A "big mistake" would directly infer negative consequences. So, what exactly do you think those consequences are of this "big mistake"?

Will it sell less because it's 60fps?
Will fans enjoy it less, thus hurting the brand for future purchases? Sure, I can see it now... "I'd like to cancel my Halo 5 pre-order. Why, you ask? Oh, because Halo 2 remastered was 60 frames per second!"

No doubt you'd criticize it, if it were 30 fps. Or 47 fps, or 192 fps, or...

1080p, 60fps can only help the game. A higher resolution was severely needed especially in Halo 3. Just look at the jaggies and low render distance... 60 FPS makes almost every game better and Halo is not an exception. I would rather have Halo 3 graphics and 60 FPS than Star citizen graphics and sub 60 FPS.

Wait . . . there's seriously people in here that are actively advocating a developer/publisher aim for 30fps?!

absolutely

xb1 could use the extra frametime to push better physics and visuals

1080/60 has got to be a challenge for a gpu with 16 ROPs and DDR3 for vram

I expect that if I looked at the OP's post history I'd find tons of posts bashing every PS4 game that is 1080p for the same reasons. If not then OP's credibility is 0.
