Hmm about as dangerous as a sharpened pencil, in the average persons hands. 😛

Seriously though I'm surprised pencils haven't been banned, as they aren't far removed from old weapons used by assassins. 😛

Do you even know how to read? 😕

Yes I do, Thanks for asking though.

The Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV report that under the new guidelines, kirpans meeting certain criteria will be allowed for Sikh students

Why do they need to carry it to school? What is the criteria? I did not see it in the article linked. I posted some pictures of Kirpans. They all appeared to be rather pointed and a weapon.

It is also known that there are other ways:

Similarly, small kirpan-shaped pendants are worn around the neck, again fulfilling the criterion of the faith that the dagger be ever-present.

Wouldn't this be a better solution.

Cant have kids bring plastic knives with their lunch but this is perfectly ok.

What happened to zero tolerance?

Its so sad its almost funny.

wait someone has banned plastic knives now?

I've seen news reports of kids being expelled for having plastic knives in the name of zero tolerance.
There's some sort of lunch item with peanut butter & crackers that has a knife with it to spread the peanut butter.

I don't know if the rulings where upheld or not.. you never here the follow-up story it seems.

AreaCode707 mentioned that banning toy weapons in general is overkill, so you post pictures of Kirpans that are obviously not mock/fake/toy/etc...?

Sorry, I don't follow you there.

waiting for one of those crazy ass zealots to sharpen one and shank some infidels.

Sikhs dont do that kind of stuff.

Upset that there is a double standard on "weapons" and separation of church and state.

Double standard? Separation of church and state?

Kinda like the Amish males being expelled for having a beard - the supreme court ruled the school does not have a right to infringe on a persons religious beliefs.

Kinda like pentecostal girls not having to wear shorts in PE class - will all of the other girls have to wear shorts.

Is called freedom of religion, look it up sometime.

The article said: A Detroit-area district says it's allowing Sikh students to wear a small, religious dagger to school.

AreaCode707 stated that they agree with the ruling.

Hence I posted the pictures of the Kirpans and stated that I don't think they should allow them in schools.

I also noted in a later post that they can wear a small charm kirpan necklace that meets the religious requirements without carrying a dagger.

Any better?

Why do they ban prayer in schools? That infringes on freedom of religion.

Hmmm. I await your answer.

School administration led prayer is banned.

Student led prayer that affects the whole school is banned.

Students may pray together in groups or by themselves and there is nothing the school can do about it.

people still bitch about korpans?

Welcome to 10 years ago.

Seriously, some of you guys need to join reality. Religious intolerance is very much yesterday and there will be even less room for it going forward.

Nope, the kirpans you linked to would still be banned. You seem to have missed the part of having to meet certain criteria. If you had looked, the criteria are:

Starting Monday, January 31, 2011, baptized students of the Sikh faith will be allowed to wear the kirpan at school with the following conditions:

1. Any kirpan worn at school should be sewn inside a sheath in such a way that the blade cannot be removed from the sheath.
2. The blade of the kirpan is restricted in length to no more than two and one-fourth inches. This would take the object outside the scope of the Revised School Code’s definition of a knife constituting a dangerous weapon.
3. The blade of the kirpan must be dull.
4. The kirpan should not be worn on the outside of the clothing and should not be visible in any way.
5. It will not be the practice of staff members to conduct random searches for the possession of kirpans. However, students who violate any of the above will be subject to discipline including a prohibition on wearing the kirpan to school in the future.

I initially had a problem with this like a decade ago before realizing that blanket rules are what make society act as retarded as it often does these days.

These things are utterly harmless. Allowing children to wear them as a symbol of their faith harms no one. Stop using issues like this to prop up your "the minorities are running wild!" bullshit.

That kirpan is as sharp as an AAA battery, unless that's just the sheath.

They should just replace the old rule with "don't bring any weapons to school that are intended to injure/scare people or damage school property (on/near school property)".

I'm sure I could hurt someone with that.

What's with the trend of NOT READING that's running rampant in this thread?
