My thoughts exactly.

It's not about being closed minded, but they should try to assimiliate to the country they immigrated to. When I say assimilate, I do not mean getting rid of their tradition or culture, but at least being competent in English.

I am an immigrant myself.

That's my reasoning. You don't have to give up your native language. But if you are going to move to another culture, at least try to adapt to your new land.

I had a friend from high school who was taking French classes. She loved the language and ended up doing a study abroad program over there. She liked the country so much that she moved there permanently, became a French citizen, got married, and had a kid. The only time she speaks English really is when she calls home to talk with family and friends.

Here's what we need to do:

**Make English the official language of the United States**

All official federal/state documentation should be in English with no Spanish versions. Want a driver's license? Prove that you are legal (or have a valid visa) and can speak English. Why the *&^# should we have to be inconvenienced for someone who wants to shack up here in OUR country and expect us to bend over backwards for them. We're making it too easy on them and they're taking advantage. I say cut out the free breadsticks and salad!!!

You don't just bust through your neighbor's door (that you hardly know at all), march up the steps and start dry humping his 18 year old daughter. You introduce yourself to him first, tell him that you're a nice fella on the way to a nice college, ask about his daughter and her interests/likes, ask if you can take her out on a date, get to know the chick, THEN you dry hump her upstairs.

This is the most surprising post I have ever seen from you.

The land isn't yours. You only occupy it because a bunch of terrorists decided it was their right to take it and murder anyone who opposed it. Do you think it's my right to bust through your door, rape your GF, kill you, and then take your home as my own? Same thing...

The United States has no official language, so there is no reason to make government documents in english only. If anything, everything should be printed in both Spanish and English because that's what the majority of the population speaks. It's called tolerance, and it's something I would think a black guy like yourself might be a little more open minded about.

Its not about dwelling in the past, is people ignoring something because "it happened, so what".

Like I said in my earlier post, these two "immigrations" are the same. No difference.

The elimination of a culture to make way for a new civilization has happened in just about every country at some time or another. It's what warfare is all about, when you think about it.

It's not our damn language-- we don't have an official language.

I don't know why I came into this thread-- they always make me disgusted with people. For school, I'm doing work at an after school program at an elementary school here, where they have a large Latino population. The kids are in bilingual education, focusing mostly on Spanish, with English added in, until they get to a certain level of comprehension and can join their English-speaking classmates. They don't see speaking Spanish as a deficit, but rather want to improve the students' Spanish while introducing them to English at the same time.

Adults coming to the US from Spanish speaking countries don't have the luxury of being transitioned into using English like that, and it's much more difficult for adults to learn a new language in the first place.

I really don't see what the problem is with people speaking another language. I liked a previous suggestion I read of having two national languages.

The costs associated with two national languages would be enormous.

But we're still going to have a communication barrier. Two seperate languages, three sects living in the United States. One group sticking with each other and not bother to learn English. Then you'll have another sect of English speakers not willing to learn Spanish. Then you'll have the sect that learns/knows both languages.

What makes more sense? Adopting another language and allowing for there to still be a language "wall" to be in place, or force, err, encourage those who move here to adopt English.

I know that we don't have English as an official language, but I wish that we did.

I would't expect for Spain to bend over backwards for me if I moved there and didn't know how to communicate in Spanish.

Maybe we should just make spanish the offical language. I mean after all we are taking over the US. 😛

I don't blame my dissapointments on anyone but myself, unless it has been out of my control. You are absolutely correct - there will be no "white", but that's probably even more frightening to the folks in this thread that a white minority status.

..when there is no recognizable high profile target for the race bate'ers and racketters the next step up the "icism" ladder is classicism. As is the norm in homogeneous societies. There is no escape from the "human" condition.

You know what multiple languages causes?? Division. It divides people. A common language is good because it puts everyone on the same page. U.S. has always been English. In no way should we accomodate speakers of Spanish. It takes away their motivation to learn English and become part of our society. If you want the comfort of your native tongue, stay in your own country. Other wise, ADAPT you fools.

I only see the people who speak English dividing people forcefully. Look at this thread. Bilingual people aren't the ones who are doing that.

Bilinguals aren't the problem. A lot of you seem to be missing the point.

Having two seperate languages enforces the idea and the formation of two seperate cultures instead of a unified country. Immigrants who know only Spanish would move here and have no motivation to speak English b/c everything would be laid out for them on a silver platter. English speakers would have no motivation to learn Spanish b/c, hell...why should they? So you wouldn't have the United States of America. You would have the United States of English America and the United States of Spanish America.

Language consolidation makes the most sense, and since English is the most prevelant languages in the United States and how we conduct, business and government operations, English FTW!

Maybe you should learn Spanish. You can only change yourself, so why not? Hispanics are going to be the majority in this county within a century, probably less.

what about making everyone bilingual? lets take india for example, where they have their native language and everyone knows english.

Mexicans...
Why can't they learn our language before moving here...?

Because the schools are so great south of the border.

However, the last time I went to Tijuana damn near everyone downtown spoke English!

Last time I checked, English is more universally accepted than Spanish b/c of power position that the United States and England have now and have had in the past.

Japanese school children don't want to learn Spanish. They want to learn English. Same for Indian kids and Chinese Kids and Russian kids, etc.

You're asking Americans to become bilingual in Spanish when we aren't the ones having problems communicating in society. My contention is that immigrants should be the ones to become bilingual.

Your asking the majority to conform to the minority for communication purposes. I'm saying that it should be the other way around.

To answer this question specifically: Why can't they learn our language before moving here...?

Because it's too friggin hard! Immersion is the easiest way to learn and it's fun, unlike taking a class that costs $$ and is boring. That's what I try to do when I go abroad.

As for Spanish speaking immigrants not learning English, don't blame it on them. Blame it on yourselves and white flight. If we were truly integrated then this wouldn't be an issue.

wrong. in areas with heavily populated spanish-speaking populations (like cali), make it bilingual, and for just those people.

There's a strong bias against Mexicans here on ATOT cause of the huge immigration issue that the media has JUST brought to light. So you have the ATOTers who have always been prejudiced against illegal immigrants, and because of this, they're labeled by people as racists and that they hate all Mexicans and immigrants, and then you have the people who are just now jumping on the bandwagon. THen you have all the newer ATOT threads about immigration. On top of that, because this board is primarily Non-Mexican, it's OK for people to rip on Mexicans, but there'd be backlash against people ripping on Asians.

There's no reason to bash Asian's .....they don't make up over 50% of the illegal immigrant population and tend to learn English.......I don't remember having to press '3" for Chinese last time I called a call-center......but press "1" for Spanish is becoming more and more common.....

You can argue otherwise, but not one of you would have the same gripe regarding the french, or even the Russians which constitute one of the greatest ethnic immigrations currently - they are flooding into New York and other areas....but they are white. If you just don't like Mexicans around, just say it and at least have the balls to admit to your prejudice. Don't preface your racist rants with "I don't mean anything bad to the mexican people" Sure you do, and you know it.

Speaking languages wherever and whenever you please is an American right. What you may find rude is really just your frustration at having essentially no culture of your own apart from MTV, Jessica Simpson gossip, and the Gap. That the culture from which your ancestors came was so worthy of being tossed it in the toilet was not our fault. I like my culture and heritage and didn't need to escape from it as a destitute, rag-dressed bum from the Polish, English, German or Italian underclass like your grandparents did.

Just you wait and see. The America as you want it - with the lazy, laurels-resting white middle-class - are going to be a thing of the past. You fools have been living on borrowed time. Its about time to stop thinking you deserve a $12 wage for your uneducated, unskilled labor. It's hilarious to see white people shaking in their boots - what do you expect when you've sat like blind sheep for so long while your beloved morons tell you eveythings going to be okay? Cause "We're No.1!!! U..S..A!"

LOL do you not see the racism in your own statement?

No, you need to blame the English-speaking people for thinking they deserve anything more than what the mexican is willing to be paid. Noone wants to be an underclass. Go ahead, chase out the mexicans - i'm excited to see which white people end up cleaning toilets and bathrooms.

You keep saying white people, are you grouping all white people together as having the same mentality and bias?

That's because there aren't that many Asians, but when you live in communities like I do where the population is 50% Asian, then it's like wow.

I think Asians are cool, but a lot of fobby people piss me off when they just speak Chinese all day long.
