I don't mean anything bad about the mexican people by posting this. I like the country and the culture that the people have. I'm not going to get into the political aspect of the free-loaders coming here to be better off since their own country doesn't want to support their poor. But here is my rant:

<rant>I know this is an old rant, but I'm getting tired of this. We just got 2 new cleaning ladies here at the office a few months ago and they're both mexican women who do not speak English. I know you don't have to speak English to operate a mop or clean a toilet, but they don't get it...

We're a major data center for roughly 17,000 clients and security is a issue here. We're in a secured area, but these ladies keep leaving doors unlocked and open when they come in and mop in the mornings. We've had talks with their supervisors about it and put up bi-lingual signs to let everyone know that this should be a secured area. They mop our offices in the mornings with water that hasn't been changed, thus leaving muddy footprints on the floors, and they often barge into the mens room before or after knocking just because they seem to want to clean it. So it's like they knock, but if you say, "Someone is in the restroom." They must think you're saying, "Come in...no one is here."

If they could speak English, we could talk to them about the problems, but we have to go through their bosses...which spikes resentment towards us. I guess I'm also tired of seeing them sitting around outside the data center every morning not doing anything. I'm probably going to lockup the chairs in the hallway so they can sit somewhere else or get back to work.

Mexico is only good for getting cheap tequila & prostitutes, silly hats, and saving our butts in the event of an ice age caused by global warming.....ohh yeah, and I wish our cleaning ladies could speak English.
 
By putting up bilingual signs, your company is perpetuating the problem. I would venture to guess that they (as in all non-English speaking people that come to the US) would learn English very quickly if they had no choice in public and commercial buildings (i.e., outside of their personal homes).
 
sooo, only mexican workers are capable of leaving doors unlocked, or using dirty water to mop with....

this isn't an issue with nationality, it's a discipline issue.

my white landscape guy is murdering me with costs... is that a function of his ethnicity?

Agreed OP. If I were moving to a foreign country that didn't speak English, I'd damn sure be learning their language as fast as I could. They want to stay, they learn English. Its not that fvcking hard

EDIT This bilingual ****** has to stop. You don't speak the language of the country you're invading, you're fvcked. Buck up and deal with it

There are many American citizens living in Caribbean countries who do not speak the language. It goes both ways.

And yes, they should at least learn at least some English, but for the work they do, do they need it? Also if they do know English they'll charge you a lot more for their "job", that no one else wants to do.

How bout you all give them some time? It doesn't happen overnight, sheesh. He already said the 2 ladies were new, so they probably are new to the country or working with American people who only speak english. Most of the foreign people who come to the US typically work with people from their own culture at first, so they are still speaking their native language.

But now that they are going to be in an environment where english is spoken, I'm sure they will pick up on more english.

Sure, but we have an advantage since most people speak English as well... a bit different, I feel.

my parents knew a bit english before they moved here and now they speak english very well but with korean accent. 😕

more importantly... when east asian people become US citizens and live here permanenly... why dont they speak english in public?
Its ok to speak your native language in your own home...

but if your in a group of people its rude to speak in a non english language unless everyone there speaks it!!!!!
 
Seriously dude it's not just Mexicans. I've driven through many communities and signs that were only in Chinese or Taiwanese or whatever. There is certainly a strong baised against Mexicans here on ATOT, and I find it disgusting.

I agree with you ... it's the same thing.

The only difference is American's are assholes about it and touch the subject as elitists, kind of like in this thread.

When I was in Nicaragua trying to communicate with the people there, it was fun and they were liking the fact I was trying to learn english. Same when I was in Aruba trying to speak to them in their native tongue (even though they speak English somewhat too).

Then on the plain to Nicaragua some spanish lady was in the wrong seat and the flight attendant (American) was being a complete bitch to her because she couldn't understand she was in the wrong seat.

That tends to be the typical attitude from my experience.
 
People come here because their economy is in shambles due to corruption dating back over the centuries. Their government has major issues. America is their only logical choice to help the survival of their family.

America, otoh, is doing a horrible job of 1) creating and enforcing US immigration policy to deal with the migration pattern, 2) doing a poor job of creating incentives for more ESL teachers in schools to teach English (and to teach adults in the workforce) and 3) doing a poor job of managing relations with Mexican officials on imigration matters.

Basically, we aren't going to stop the migration short of closing our borders and shooting those who cross illegally. Or threatening to declare war on Mexico if they can't keep their people from leaving.

What we can do are setup controls around immigration policies, acceptance of welfare and medical benefits stipulations, and dealing with the immigrants we already have in our cities to get them able to participate in our economy. Of course this is not easy and will take time and patience.

There's a strong bias against Mexicans here on ATOT cause of the huge immigration issue that the media has JUST brought to light. So you have the ATOTers who have always been prejudiced against illegal immigrants, and because of this, they're labeled by people as racists and that they hate all Mexicans and immigrants, and then you have the people who are just now jumping on the bandwagon. THen you have all the newer ATOT threads about immigration. On top of that, because this board is primarily Non-Mexican, it's OK for people to rip on Mexicans, but there'd be backlash against people ripping on Asians.

A German friend of mine, who speaks about 6 languages, said that English was the easiest for him to learn to speak (Russian being the hardest). However, he said it's a bitch to learn how to spell/write.

I speak czech between my mom and / or my brother in the public.. why the hell shouldn't I? But if we're with other people, it's all english ... because otherwise people obviously can't participate.
