Funny, I was just thinking the same thing. Except I was wondering why all you white-eyed devils didn't learn Cherokee when you were coming over on those boats. You had time, you know?

I'm tired of having to sit through the bilingual automated phone system message, TV commercials, bus stop announcements, read cluttered signs, etc. 🙂

We didn't have CSL at the time... Cherokee as a Second Language 😀

I don't mean anything bad about the mexican people by posting this. I like the country and the culture that the people have. I'm not going to get into the political aspect of the free-loaders coming here to be better off since their own country doesn't want to support their poor. But here is my rant:

<rant>I know this is an old rant, but I'm getting tired of this. We just got 2 new cleaning ladies here at the office a few months ago and they're both mexican women who do not speak English. I know you don't have to speak English to operate a mop or clean a toilet, but they don't get it...

We're a major data center for roughly 17,000 clients and security is a issue here. We're in a secured area, but these ladies keep leaving doors unlocked and open when they come in and mop in the mornings. We've had talks with their supervisors about it and put up bi-lingual signs to let everyone know that this should be a secured area. They mop our offices in the mornings with water that hasn't been changed, thus leaving muddy footprints on the floors, and they often barge into the mens room before or after knocking just because they seem to want to clean it. So it's like they knock, but if you say, "Someone is in the restroom." They must think you're saying, "Come in...no one is here."

If they could speak English, we could talk to them about the problems, but we have to go through their bosses...which spikes resentment towards us. I guess I'm also tired of seeing them sitting around outside the data center every morning not doing anything. I'm probably going to lockup the chairs in the hallway so they can sit somewhere else or get back to work.
</rant>

Cliffs:
Mexico is only good for getting cheap tequila & prostitutes, silly hats, and saving our butts in the event of an ice age caused by global warming.....ohh yeah, and I wish our cleaning ladies could speak English.

You do of course realize that since America has no official language, Spanish is just as much our language as English right? Maybe your rant should be about illiterate people/ people who can't learn instead?

Who are any of you to judge what language someone should speak? This is the USA, first ammendment rights people. This country has no official language, never has and probably never will. Obviously these cleaning ladies can do their job quite well without knowing English, and obviously they are having some disciple problems.... but the 2 aren't exactly causal. This nation is very very rapidly becoming a mostly bilingual country. Think its just the Mexicans? Think again. Lots of Peurto Ricans, Dominican, South Americans on the east coast do taking similar "immigrant" jobs. And just like past immigrant groups, the longer they are here the more educated their ethnic groups (especially their next generations) will become and the more economically stable, and when the latino generations move up socioeconomically there will be more immigrant groups to take over their societal position like before.

This country was economically grown on the backs of immigrants. Black slaves, Chinese rail workers, even the Irish, Italians, Greeks... hell they were all once viewed as minority immigrants with the lower socioeconomic jobs. Now it's latinos. And just as previous groups were discriminated, isolated, blamed.... so are the Mexicans. And I can't believe people are surprised by this.

I took spanish for 2 years and know like 7 words, so i cant really blame them. Its tough to learn a new language when your not a kid.

Difference is, most of them took the time to learn English. I don't recall not being able to speak English a problem around here until about 5 years ago.

If you're in a land dominated by the English language, would you feel it necessary to adapt rather than us adapt to you?

You don't show up to Bible school study with a Koran in your hand.

No they didn't. Most likely they did not learn English. It was the 1st generation (kids) of the immigrants that went to school here, were bilingual, more educated, and moved up the socioeconomic ladder. Let's say you just jumped the border from Mexico with no money, little education, no family here. How are you going to "take the time to learn English?" No soc number, no community college courses. No $$$ no lessons. No English speaking friends, no english conversation. Get a book from the library and self learn? Extremely hard when you are working 60 hrs a week and raising children. Maybe we should have government funded TV stations that are 24/7 English lessons: "Oh wait that's a liberal view that is educationing the illegal aliens that shouldnt even be here and giving them more power to take our English speaking better paying jobs." What you are arguing for is basically assimilation. Is that how you solve things? Next time thank the Mexican scrubbing the toilet for carrying our economy on his back and hope that he isn't learning English because someone has gotta do that job, and if not him then who?

**Make English the official language of the United States**

All official federal/state documentation should be in English with no Spanish versions. Want a driver's license? Prove that you are legal (or have a valid visa) and can speak English. Why the *&^# should we have to be inconvenienced for someone who wants to shack up here in OUR country and expect us to bend over backwards for them. We're making it too easy on them and they're taking advantage. I say cut out the free breadsticks and salad!!!

You don't just bust through your neighbor's door (that you hardly know at all), march up the steps and start dry humping his 18 year old daughter. You introduce yourself to him first, tell him that you're a nice fella on the way to a nice college, ask about his daughter and her interests/likes, ask if you can take her out on a date, get to know the chick, THEN you dry hump her upstairs.

This is the most surprising post I have ever seen from you.

The land isn't yours. You only occupy it because a bunch of terrorists decided it was their right to take it and murder anyone who opposed it. Do you think it's my right to bust through your door, rape your GF, kill you, and then take your home as my own? Same thing...

The United States has no official language, so there is no reason to make government documents in english only. If anything, everything should be printed in both Spanish and English because that's what the majority of the population speaks. It's called tolerance, and it's something I would think a black guy like yourself might be a little more open minded about.

wait, but his goal in life should be to learn English, so he can pleasure us.

This whole post is disgusting. So what if they don't speak English. It's not that hard to communicate. I work with people who don't speak English on a daily basis and we get along just fine with pointing and body language.
They have come to this country to make a better lives for themselves and their families. Though, unfortunately they are extremely deluded as to reality of the "American Dream" they should at least get a chance to try.
Also, when other people are speaking another language around you, you shouldn't be worried at all. Unless you are extremely paranoid and self-centered enough to think that they are talking about you all the time, which is probably not the case. Of course they could be asking themselves "what the heck is wrong with that paranoid and self-centered guy over there?"

My feeling is, if you want to work here, fine. I actually have NO problem with that. BUT, why should we use federal and state funds to make it easier for them to continue functioning in the United States as if they were still in their native country where the majority of people speak their language?

Last time I checked, our government, most businesses and schools are based around the English language. My contention is, why should government and businesses native to the United States have to double up on languages to accommodate those migrating to an English dominated society?

as long as we're teaching them english also, they will be able to function in the U.S.

what you're really afraid of is that Spanish could become a dominant language in this country.

The majority of Americans speak English. Hispanic Americans (legal ones) make up around 13 - 14% of the population IIRC.

As for being black. What does that have to do with anything at this point in time? I work, I pay my taxes, I support my government. No problems here. If you're trying to turn this into a race issue, I'm not following. I'm not talking about race, I'm talking about language.

The government has a duty towards everyone, not just 83-84% of the country. AFAIK, there are more spanish speakers than that, since there are non-hispanic spanish speakers as well.

I'm not turning it into a race issue. You made a post that shows you are intolerant of people speaking a language other than english in a country where there is no official language.

My point was that as a black man, I'm sure you've encountered more intolerance than most people in your country, and I find it surprising that you would, in turn, help perpetuate that intolerance. You have always seemed quite educated, and your post doesn't seem to fit with the character I'm used to seeing on the boards.

Can't believe you guys are arguing over language...........it's a cultural lesson for ALL of us. Be happy that we get to experience different cultures. Unless they are the minorities who want to be in gangs, sell drugs, shoot and threaten all the time then it's kool with me.

Living in Stockton, I have more to worry about then the hassle of trying to tell my mexican coworker stuff using body language.

You do know that other countries have signs with english on them too right.

To tell you the truth, I haven't encountered racism personally in my life (with the exception of my GF's grandma who has since gotten over it). Just b/c I'm black doesn't mean that I've had a rough time with life.

I've just been rather miffed recently about the whole issue...I made a thread recently about my HS being on the verge of shutdown b/c non-english students are flooding the school and the teachers are bombarded with dealing with english speaking and non-english speaking students in the same classrooms. Tests scores are down, violence is up and they want to close the school. The school was perfectly fine when I graduated from it.

As far as being intolerant of people who speak other languages. I have no problem with people speaking other languages in the United States. I just think they should add English to the list as well.

Stop dwelling in the past please. Yes, it's unfortunate that the Native Americans were murdered (almost a genocide) and their lands were taken. But this is United States now, Founding Fathers spoke English, the Constitution written in English.

It's not about being closed minded, but they should try to assimiliate to the country they immigrated to. When I say assimilate, I do not mean getting rid of their tradition or culture, but at least being competent in English.

I am an immigrant myself.
