ugh, just read this stat

Still, the belief remains that a Sosa-to-the-Mets trade ultimately will get done

Over the last three years at Shea, Sosa has hit .129 with one homer in 31 at-bats.

Last year in Wrigley's friendly confines, Sosa hit .277 with 18 homers and a .361 on-base percentage. But on the road, the respective numbers were .231, 17 and .305. That's barely an improvement over what last year's Met rightfielder, Richard Hidalgo, provides, at a much higher cost.

I miss the days of Mets being anywhere near good -- last was in 2000, when they were beaten by the Yankees. Heh. You remember Paul O'Neill's 12 pitch at bat? oh man do i miss that guy

I dont like the Mets, sometimes hate em, but you have to feel sorry for them a bit.

good = non-high priced talent...the mets owners are more intent on off-season press rather then good press in the regular season

Mets are better off without Floyd, Piazza, and a few more of their stiffs...

I would trade Reyes for Soriano, what has Reyes done or proven other than the fact that he can get hurt? Soriano should move to the OF though, he's pretty average at 2b.

Wright is/was their top prospect, not Kazmir....

I agree with you.
Although if Sori moves to the outfield then he is just an average outfielder numbers-wise. At 2B, his stats really stand out from the rest of the second basemen. Reyes is too young to not be able to stay on the field.

According to Newsday, the Mets are getting close on Benson.

You can also say he was a huge competitor, but it doesn't hide the fact that he whined about every other pitch.

I think he got angry at himself more than anything else.

The Mets need someone like this. They seem to sleepwalk through a lot of games. It's not wrong to care.

Angry at himself ? I saw the back of his head more than anything cause he turned around to balk at the umpire more than he tried to swing the bat. His temper tantrums with throwing his helmet and bat down were pretty comical. Way to be professional. He remains the biggest cry baby I've ever seen, despite his numbers.

He was a tough competitor, as you yourself pointed out, and took his job seriously.
Comical or not, he has a batting title, 5 rings (the Mets haven't even been to 5 World Series in their history), and a reputation for being a hard worker and a hustler.
The funny thing is, he was always relaxed and comfortable off the field.

With all the losers in sports, he remains far from the most unprofessional athlete out there.

Trading Piazza for Sosa is retarded, but trading anyone else is smart - but not necessarily for the team's on-field succes.

NYC has a HUUUUGE Dominican population and Sosa's presence would drive merchandising revenues through the roof.

Giving up the Piazza money for that is just dumb.

Sosa is a wanker either way...

(if the Mets get Sosa) They need to give him more steroids and corked bats and he'll be fine.

Forget Sosa, they need pitching (who doesn't?).
Even if they sign Benson to join Glavine and Trachsel, who else do they have? Zambrano?
And they need help in the bullpen as well.

help in the bullpen is an understatement....they need a bullpen

bring back Benitez...he was horrid in the playoffs, but he helped get us to the playoffs

Sosa for Floyd would be ok i guess as long as the cubs pay most of the salary..

Soriano said he really does not want to play OF according to the NYPOST

Letting leiter walk is great, they're targeting clement which would be a good addition. I think if healthy, Zambrano is gonna surprise a lot of people next year. If we could get maggs cheap he would be a great addition, granted his knee is healthy.

Why the hell would the Mets want Pedro?? I sure don't. Yea yea... he is a marquee name and would bring butts to the seat, but he is past his prime and I'm sick and damn tired of the Mets picking up players past their prime.

I sure as hell don't want to see Omar's boy Sosa on the team either. I can see it now... His first game at Shea in a Mets uniform..strikes out 4 times ..gets booed to death. Next game he has a few blunders in the outfield...gets booed to death. Then he hits a few balls.. does that silly hop of his only to see the ball go into the outfielders glove. Hey Sammy..Shea is a pitchers park remember? If he is picked up by the Mets and starts off poorly he will be booed much like Cedeno. I doubt he was booed much at Wrigley.

Nice thing the Mets did this offseason was getting rid of John Franco. I had enough of mafia boy giving up homeruns and having that damn smirk while he watches the ball land in his pumpkin patch behind the right field wall.

I hope the Mets pick up a good defensive first baseman, some bullpen help, a good outfielder, no Sosa, no Pedro..etc. They have a lot of work to do and as a Mets fan I'm already used to being disappointed. I pray for a good offseason.

i highly doubt that ownership will pay Pedro the money he wants. with the red sox and yankees interested in signing pedro, there is no way the mets come up with enough money. here is where georges wallet works in the favor of the mets.

I totally agree with you on Sosa...

and i doubt we would get pedro because we wouldnt offer as much as the yanks or red sox...but i would like him, he's still got some left in him and we only have 4 starters, so we need a 5th from somewhere

but i also agree the bullpen needs serious help.

well now according to ESPN insider and NY Daily News it seems the Yanks and Pedro most likely wont happen and that it was most likely a ploy to A) make the red sox pay more and B) get the diamondbacks moving on sending randy johnson to the yanks

the mets are supposed to make an offer soon for pedro

No Pedro!!! Plus Pedro is just using both NY teams for some more $$$$.

What I liked reading was that David Weathers gave the Mets a great endorsement when telling Carl Pavano about his time in NY. Thanks David! I see no reason (besides more $$) why Pavano wouldn't want to stay in the NL East as he knows all the players and fields.

from the NYPOST

the team has offered him a three-year guaranteed deal for $37.5 million and included a fourth-year team option that could push the total value to approximately $50 million.

The Mets' offer trumps what's believed to be the only other proposal for Martinez right now, that bid coming from Boston. The Red Sox have offered Martinez two years with an option that could be worth $38 million. While the average annual values are alike, the Mets have added an extra guaranteed year.

I honestly doubt Martinez will be a Met next season, but if Boston or the Yanks dont offer better contracts then Pedro just might take the Mets' offer. ugh.. please.. someone..outbid the Mets.
