I've been stuck doing side ops missions. Everytime I get a new one I go and do it. I still have yet to do the 5th story mission. It's annoying how some areas don't have better drop zones for your helicopter.

If you take out mobile ground radar stations, it will open up drop points. I don't think they're usable in all situations, though. For example, in the C2W mission, I took out the radar in that base and it now gives me a pickup spot right across the road, but when I tried going back to that mission to get a couple of the side objectives, I still had to be dropped off on the other side of the mountain/hill/whatever and go around. That new spot was crossed out as a drop spot (not like I would've wanted to drop there anyway, since it was right in front of everybody).

Yea I think for main missions you can do that. For side ops I don't think it matters. I've taken over an outpost in one side op and then I went and did another side op mission and the post was still there.

It makes sense because the enemy will send more troops to a road checkpoint for example if you take them out and don't station your own guard to hold the position.

Also some ledges and such are there to force you to go around and not just climb over the mountains. There are sometimes cracks in the walls you can use to climb up though.

man just finished the really annoying "Honey Bee" mission. I even rescued Hamid, but he just disappeared before I can send him off to the fulton? It just cut to the boss sequence, with no trace of his body. Does he bring anything to the table?

He's not significant. I am on mission 21 now. I'm skipping many of the side ops because the soldiers I find and extract during missions are more skilled than the ones you can get from side-ops.

So I've done all side missions before mission 4 or 5 and I notice they all have check marks. But #27 is checked off with a small circle on the left. It is not greyed out..does it mean I need to do it again?

I was going to ask the same thing. On the screen where it shows the number of side ops not completed / total number of side ops, that checked off but not greyed out mission is counted as not completed. I've done the mission twice already and rescued the hostage. Not sure what they expect me to do?

BTW, are you guys replaying main mission episodes to finish all the objectives before going on to the next episode? I've tried completing unchecked objectives but can't find what they are talking about in many cases. Are those type of objectives connected to your equipment, buddy, or current level somehow so it won't be complete-able until you get those things? Or did I just not find the correct place on the map to go to? I'm trying to avoid reading walk throughs so I discover it for myself but I'm going in circles here.

Another question: I find myself choosing to fulton every one if I have the choice, is there any reason not to fulton out the all E guys with no skills? Does it negatively affect anything? I figure it can't hurt. Would my rating be higher if I just headshot those guys, kill them in CQC, or just put them to sleep?

In that case I won't redo that side op if you are saying its still not greyed out. I would also like to know the answer to your second part too. I haven't done any main missions except saving kaz.

Ground Zero's had a story? All I recall is being introduced to some characters, I didn't remember much of any real story...what is it exactly?

I was excited for Phantom Pain last year but recent months I pretty much lost all interest, not sure if I want to just go around from base to base all the time assuming it's similar to Ground Zero...isn't there any cool missions like MGS on PS1 had? Like sneak into vent shafts, that kind of stuff or is it all just going from base to base like Farcry 4 or something, sneaking around to find stuff and getting out?
Because if it's just a bunch of bases like the one in Ground Zero then it doesn't sound too exciting for the long haul.

It is like the older mgs games in a way but open world. So that's where the bases come in to play. You can accomplish the missions any way you want though. I haven't played much of the story missions but the first two and they were presented nicely I thought.

There are a couple of early missions that you simply don't have the gear to complete. For example, one tells you fulton out the cargo containers but you're far away from upgrading it enough to lift stuff of that weight.

As for other side missions that you can find, one word three times....interrogate, interrogate, interrogate. They'll tell you where stuff is at and it will then mark it on your map to go find.

Ground Zeros is what happens shortly after Peace Walker. If you hadn't played Peace Walker, then you'd have to listen to the tapes in GZ in order to get an idea of who Chico and Paz were and why you were rescuing them. Then, Phantom Pain starts 9 years after GZ.

The short of it is

You were rescuing chico and paz. The crew on the extraction chopper find that Paz was rigged with a bomb inside her. It was diffused safely. During this time there was a fake inspection team from the IAEA inspecting your base for Nukes. It was a front for Cypher who sabotaged mother base and blew it up and attempted to kill everyone working with Big Boss. Big Boss arrived right as it was going down and escapes just in time. It was found that there was second bomb shortly after the escape and Paz throws herself out the side of the chopper. She blows up and blows up the chopper along with you. The world thinks Big Boss is dead.

Phantom Pain starts after that.

So even after you do all the side ops, the ones that are checked but have a circle on the left, they will just keep respawning objectives even though you already completed them. You can do them twice before another crossed off side op becomes highlighted again.

There are main missions that pop up later that have special requirements for fulfillment. They are optional though. One is subsistence where you are dropped in in standard OD Green camo and no equipment whatsoever. You have to use what you find from other soldiers to win. Another is extreme where the difficulty is raised and the chicken hat and reflex mode are not available. Then there is perfect stealth, as the name implies you need to complete it without being caught. If you are spotted once by the enemy, you fail.

That's not really a story that's a plot. To me it appeared they introduced some characters, events happen, the end. I didn't really notice much of any real story.

Just got through Honey Bee, that was brutal. If you make it through that with never being detected, you deserve a medal. I lost track of Hamid though and he died so I gotta replay it. Ugh. A sniper rifle with silencer would be a life savor for this mission.

No it's the story up to the point phantom pain begins. It is the story ground zeroes tells to get you up to speed on current events.

Just played that mission last night. I did
pretty well if I don't count the outpost on the way to the mission area. I had taken out half the guys but there was a rogue guard I didn't spot walking around on the catwalks/scaffolding/stairs/whatever they were under the bridge. Once he made me, I just killed everybody and went on.

From that point, I was able to get past the 3 guards going up the hill where the gunship makes its rounds. Got all the way into the main base undetected, then crawled all the way around the perimeter and got into the caves. I had incapacitated a couple guys in there but then along came a patrol with 2 guards walking with each other. I didn't think I was in a spot where I could hide so I tried taking them both out quickly but it didn't work. Eventually had to kill everybody in the caves and picked up the honey bee.

I have one more mission to do before the honey bee one. Doesn't sound like I'm going to enjoy that one lol. I also hate when I'm stealthily making my way through and get spotted. I usually hate taking everyone out so I restart at the checkpoint.

If you're extremely cautious like me, Honey Bee will take about an hour and a half, so make sure you have the time. Also, close your eyes during the "intro" credits to the mission, there are spoilers abound (really don't know what they were thinking when they decided to do that).

Yea I will probably do mission 5 today and then do the honey bee one maybe tonite if I'm free. I like to take my time and I remember the first mission took me so long just to get in the area, scope around, etc. I really want to unlock the sniper rifle with the silencer. So far I've just upgraded my pistol, got some c4, the first sniper rifle, upgraded my chopper and idroid too.

What's slowing me down is my OCDness with wanting to interrogate everyone now and fultoning them out, both increase the chance of getting alerts set off. What I need is a long range sniper tranquilizer gun.

If I didn't care and just got into gun battles and killed everyone without interrogating at all, I'd get through levels much faster.

There is a non lethal sniper eventually.

I am almost done with the main story. I didn't do everything though, skipped a bunch of side ops and a couple extreme missions.

Edit: just finished the game. The ending leaves a lot of unanswered questions but the character story lines throughout the game are excellent and really have a lot of feeling.

I saw end credits 3 times. So when you think you are at the end you may not be.
