thanks a lot man....I'm playing as England but I'm getting overwhelmed. there is (the same thing happened in R:TW lol) just too much too manage and build and far too little money. Besides that, France and Scotland are annoying the hell out of me and i cant fight them because I'm spread too thing. I think i will restart and play as England again or some other factions, and just use your advice. It's pretty tough.

I'm also trying to find a good compromise between graphics and FPS. in this game it seems like even a low FPS is pretty fluid.

Appreciate your help

Scotland has 1 city when they start, England starts with 2 or 3. :p

When I started, I took control of all the cities on the British Isles before I began expanding in mainland Europe.

You have to have a General and at least 8 units together and there will be a little button on the bottom left I think when you are viewing the army. Most of the time I think the General has to be your faction leader.

buy.com has the google checkout deal where you get $20 off $50. That might be helpful although you might have to add a small item if its 49.99 :p

I think I will bump the difficulty up to hard. My treasury is swelling (over 500k florins), most of Europe is under my control and my humongous army is full of upper tier veteran units waiting to crush any opposition. Ho-hum.

He forgot to mention that he uses a 'trainer'. CTRL + F1 (add 10,000 Florins to the Treasury) FTW!!!!

Nah, I never cheat.

I am playing as the British as well. Being secluded on the island and having a castle on the mainland provides a lot of good protection. Early on, focus on economy building, especially for your cities (build farms/markets) and conquer the rebels around you and prepare to assault the Scottish. Use merchants as well, but before you send them out to face competition, use them on resources that are nearby and build experience. Once the merchants are experienced, they can be used on the mainland for more lucrative resources or ousting other merchants (this may give you few thousand florins). Of course, you should build a steady army, but don't try to over do this as they will eat up your profits. Oh and trade, trade and trade!

At my state, I am getting around 30,000 Florins per turn (more or less depending on season) with 10+ full armies (not city units, but castle units with generals).

Secure the British Isles first. The Scots have 1 city there, and you can easily take a couple, 2 I think rebel cities right away. There's also a city in Ireland thats rebel. Or, you could simply combine your forces into a single army and take out the scots right away.

Also, build a lot of financial buildings in your cities/castles. These will generate cash. The more florins you have, the better you will be. No money, no armies.

Yeah, I played through on hard with Venice and was able to capture 45 regions even before the Mongols arrived. My treasury finished at 500K+.

I continued playing for a showdown with the Mongols and had a ridiculous city battle with my maxed army finishing with 98% casualties and their combined 2 maxed armies with 99%.

The AI needs a little work though: I noticed that the AI will sometimes stop mid-charge against missile units at close range, run away, re-charge, then run away again, getting mowed down in the process. Also, the AI can be lured into a shooting gallery when you move one unit outside of the city gates, wait for them to charge, then run back inside. They'll stop their charge and walk back to their siege positions, getting shot in the back all the while. Sometimes with small battles when the AI is cornered, it retreats to a high position on a hill and tends to sit there doing nothing, allowing you to completely surround it. Missile units are also a little too eager to engage other missile units on walls.

Next time I'm going to play the Turks... some very interesting units they have there - battlefield assassins (2 hit points each), Janissaries.

Which faction has the elephant bombards? I'm guessing it's the Byzantines.

I have noticed those flaws as well. Supposedly, a patch is not too far away, and it is supposed to address the AI issues, but we will see.

I was a little disappointed to see that you can't completely destroy the Papacy. I took Rome and Naples from them, after some huge battles, and yet another Pope was elected. He appeared near Corinth. I killed that Pope and another one appeared, again outside of Corinth, just standing in the same spot accumulating mercenary recruits. After that I was permanently excommunicated, not that it mattered because pretty much every faction was hostile before that anyway. I tried to be decent about alliances, but ended up with a terrible reputation.

One thing that would be really nice is to see a unit's current orders and target. It pains me to see missile units on fire at will wasting ammo on 4 or 5 guys left in an enemy unit while full units remain untouched.

One thing that helps a lot is having a good number of assassins around spread across the map. By the end I probably had more than 30 assassins.

well....im having a lot of trouble. the inquisitors are killing my guys for some reason, when i didn't really even offend the pope. my rating is low with the pope and threatening to get lower because they're asking me to join a crusade in 10 turns when im in england and the crusade is in Jerusalem.

ive taken all the main island and built up some places, i have a castle at Caen and Nottingham. think i should take over the french now? is there anyway to do these things without fighting so much? building up a huge army for every conquest is getting really expensive. speaking of which, im not making as much money as i'd like...any ideas on how to make more more consistently?? thanks

Inquisitors will target heresy rich regions and characters with low piety. Build churches and priests to raise the % of Catholicism's in your territory. You can see teh % when you select a priest and move your cursor around territory.

Farms, markets, and mines. Anything that increases tradeable goods or adds more trade fleets. Sign trade rights treaties with other factions. In stable cities, only have a small garrison, units with the lowest upkeep. I think English get free upkeep on town militia units?

You can still join the Pope's Crusade. A crusading army moves significantly further than a normal one. After you have a decently large army built, designate it a Crusading army by right clicking on the general's portrait and clicking the 'Crusader' button. Then you need to head off towards the target city, making headway each turn or your men will start to desert you.

Keep a army very close to where the Pope "spawns"...everytime a new Pope is elected kill it.Since it starts of with only 1 unit...the General Bodyguards...that way you'll eventuallly kill off every cardinal in the college.

Well it worked for me at least.I was able to get the whole college under French Cardinal control(like 5-6 French Cardinals...and no one else).

I just pressed F6 and started building Cathedrals everywhere, and now the Pope likes me. (The 100,000 florins probably didn't hurt either)

I love this game and highly recommend it. However, like most good games, it is a huge Time waster. The hours go by far to quickly! hehe

One question for the experts here:

I have about half of my cities under AI control. Supposedly, I can promote captains to generals and then move a general into a city to gain control over that city. The problem is that I cannot figure out how to promote a captain to a general.

My understanding is that you can create an army without a general and that a captain will be generated to command this army. I thought that I could then promote that captain, but I am never provided with that option as far as I know.

What am I missing?
