But are armies not attacking you constantly? For some reason Milan is trying to annihilate me. France tried and i capture almost all of their cities. Are you taking most of these by conquest?

Well by the 60ish turns(in my Scilian campaign) I had already mobilized and built up 3 full armies consisting of Italian Militia(VERY cheap cost AND upkeep)...with my best generals leading them on my border with Milan/HRE/Venice.I was fortunate that all three of those countries decided to fight each other(thus weakening each other)...while the Papacy(I continued to have a strong alliance with them) excommunicated them.(not all at once...but pretty much in the same span of 3-5 turns)That gave me the green light to launch a full scale invasion of Northern Italy. I took advantage of the Crusade option and launched one on Venice while my 3 full armies took Genoa and Milan(Milan and Venice were to busy with each other and weak to do anything). While I waited to regroup a couple of more turns before a sent a army to take Bologna from the HRE(by this time they were excommunicated too).

Those series of moves basically made the rest of my campaign a breeze.I had control of the Northern Italiann trade monopoly(Genoa,Milan,Bologna,Venice,Florence=$$$)I didnt have to worry about being attacked by other Catholic factions because I remained very close with the Papacy and played the "good Christian"...as the game progressed I somewhat "took over the Papacy" because 1)I had a my own Cardinal as a Pope for a couple of turns 2)than after that I always had a strong presense within the college(normally like 2-3 cardinals)

I than went on to the next best place after Northern Italy(in terms of prosperous trade)...the costal ME.Which fit in perfectly with my agenda because I was always had the grace of the Papacy.

Note:I was never excommunicated or had bad ratings with the Pope.I never went farther than Northern Europe.(France was never excommunicated and HRE eventually got reconciled)My empire expanded east-southeast.

Yes. See the number in the ( ) next to the casualty counts on the post-battle page... that's the number killed by friendly fire.

That's actually how many enemy men you've captured.

I don't think so. There's a separate column to the right for men captured. The number in the ( ) is in the men lost column.

I may be wrong about this, but you can unlock factions by defeating them in game? Also, beating the game unlocks all the factions.

I like to play as the smallest factions, or those that have the odds stacked against them. The Turks I think would be fun, as they would have to deal with the brunt of the Mongol and Timurid invasions.

omgwtf, I have the same exact rig as you, and I max everything out! Everything is maxed off the roof, and I hardly get lag. I only get lag actually, when I'm in the battle map, and I have the unit movement speed at 3x. Basically, if you have a good rig, run the game maxed out, its pretty well optimized, and its kick ass. It doesn't take advantage of dual core though. :(

Besides graphics, is there really anything new in MTW2? I mean, is this just a mash up of RTW and MTW?

Merchants, Princesses, more units, larger map, more playable factions, etc. Core gameplay is very similar to RTW though, its just focused on a different time period.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of the Greek/Roman era of the ancient world than I am of the cluster-fvck that was the middle ages, but M2TW is very fun to play. :)

On the tactical side, cavalry get tricky to handle. They are kind of annoying, but can be super devastating. I love using them to turn the tide of a siege.

Also, don't expect your gunners you placed behind your pikemen to fire. They need to have nothing in between them and their enemy.

The setting is good, and factions feel more unique, and geography really kicks in, depending who you're playing as.

should i build any buildings before going to a castle though? or should i build anything before going to a city? can i only make cities and castles, or is there another upgradeable path too?

At the start, you control settlements that already are cities or castles. Rebel settlements to be conquered also already have that set for you. You can change a settlements status as city or castle at any point, but it takes time. You cannot have a castle and a city in the same settlement. Though it might be included in an ex-pack (I do not know of any ex-pack announced).
Build buildings that generate money first (roads, markets, docks, mines) and then unit produces (mustering field, or militia field, depending on settlement type)

Don't forget the Scots, Byzantines (they basically have to deal with islam, and Mongols and Timurids, if they get successful in Syria, or if the Byzantines have a presence in Syria.) and Portuguese! Danes can have a tough time too.

What I have found hard about doing what you did is the fact that money gets drained away when you build up huge armies. Did you use cheat codes or something?

I think I will bump the difficulty up to hard. My treasury is swelling (over 500k florins), most of Europe is under my control and my humongous army is full of upper tier veteran units waiting to crush any opposition. Ho-hum.

any tips? lol...as the English, the french and scotts are again overwhelming me.

Secure the British Isles first. The Scots have 1 city there, and you can easily take a couple, 2 I think rebel cities right away. There's also a city in Ireland thats rebel. Or, you could simply combine your forces into a single army and take out the scots right away.

Also, build a lot of financial buildings in your cities/castles. These will generate cash. The more florins you have, the better you will be. No money, no armies.

Yeah, basically, what you should do is convert all the castles on the British isles to cities. Move all your forces onto mainland Europe (for England). Station Militias in your cities in the British isles. Don't forget to conquer Dublin in Ireland. Desperate civs will love to take that base and launch attacks on the British isles. Don't forget to knock out the Scots. You could reasonably take out the Scots early on, depending on what your priorities are. But cash flow is necessary. Cities are the settlements that give you cash.

The Scots were easy to play as, provided you solidify control of the British Isles quickly. From there, its relatively easy to invade main land Europe or capture the towns north of Denmark.

Just finised this and R:TW (conquered entire map), great fun, but gets repetitive seiging castles. Just wondering though, does any unlockable faction have elephants or is it just the invasion (Timurids?)?

I just beat M2TW with England.

The Pope can be a powerful friend. I was excommunicated once though because he told me to stop attacking for 5 turns or something. I though that meant I HAD 5 turns to stop. I didn't realize that I HAD to stop NOW and then WAIT 5 more turns. So, I attacked and was excommunicated even though my rating was pretty high.

After that my rating was really low, but then the pope died and lucky for me, I had quite a few Cardinals seated.
So, English Cardinal gets elected, I get reconciled and my rating goes all the way to the top. Ah, the spoils of getting an English Pope.

Still, that didn't mean I could do whatever I wanted though. :p
Eventually, I was extremely stupid and attacked the Papal States, and somehow won even though basically every Catholic nation was against me, no to mention my settlements down by Jerusalem area (that I got after a Crusade) were rebelling.

Things looked grim but somehow it got turned around and I beat the campaign. The pope died, new one came back, English again, and I got reconciled.

Well, maybe I should play again, except use a few cheats this time to spice things up :p
Gets boring after a while.

I almost always conquer the Papal States . . . but after I've taken most of Christian Europe. :p

Heh, I had one game where the Papal States declared war on Spain and Portugal and actually succeeded in conquering them back. The Papal States controlled the entire Iberian Peninsula! I had to come bail them out in their war against the Moors though. :p

It is by far easiest to beat it with england, but I love trying Byzantine or Poland to strengthen my early game. By the way do you guys have any
idea why I cant get princesses after the initial start?

omg, you suck!!! Im sorry but im on turn 50 and already have 40 cities, and the territories including britain, all of france, all of the holy roman empire all of northern italy including rome, all of Iberia (if your so uneducated you don't know this term, today we call it Spain) right now Im eating into poland and denmark.
tips:-screw diplomacy, focus purely on military
-win almost all your battles, save before major ones and if anything retarded happens, such as your general getting killed by a catapult on the first launch, go back and redo, this will also teach you better tactics.
-dont be a retard and occupy cities, this makes them more likely to rebel, and forces your army to remain within that city instead of leaving it and marching on another one. ALWAYS SACK cities, unless one rebells or was in muslim hands for a long time, then exterminate.
-never lose cities, seiges are SO easy to win, its not even a contest.
-screw the pope, ignore any of the lame "missions" given to you by the pope or the council, just do your own thing

Hated the Pope early on. I went to war with him, had my mad blitz across eastern Europe haulted cause he started calling crusades on my interior cities I was too cheap to garrison. In the end, took out most of the Papal States except Rome and North Africa. Then got chummy with him when I started calling Crusades/tributing him. Then I had to go and take Jerusalem. Freaking Timurids were relentless. Had my best army cut to a quarter strength from non-stop sieges.

The game was sweet and the battles were very intense throughout the campaign. I love how it is all free form and how there is crusades and such. I love this game but the game is glitched up now so when I vs the Tim**** (Spoiler protection), the game closes. It sucks and every possibility of fixing has failed. I am stuck with Counter Strike right now; that game gets really boring if you ask me.

I have not played this game in a couple months, but I'm going to get this patch and start up a new game. I've been meaning to start a new one.
