MD can withstand 1 million times of rewriting before wearing out. I guess you couldn't make it yeah?

All MD !!! Mp3 players are too limited in capacity, storage wise, and are expensive to get flash cards for... if you can live with just 20 or so songs for a day,... mp3 players are okay... but for the option to carry a lot of music at cheaper prices (~$3 a disc) then MD players are the way to go... not to mention the cool factor = )

No contest, MD! MD players sound better, look better, are more convienient and are PC compatible. I've had my MD stuff for about 2 years now and I picked up a Xitel Storm Platinum way back when so I could record digitally and have no complaints. Since Aureal went out of business, now they don't sell the Storm Platinum soundcard anymore but they now sell a usb to optical unit for digital recording.

I think the industry should really look into the possibilities of a MD player machine playing MP3s. Instead of the $$$ for solid-state memory, it will use the 210MB (corret me if I am wrong) mini-discs to store the MP3 files.

The device would have a USB interface (USB ver 2 would be better). But I am not sure of the max write speed for a MD disc as it is Magneto-Optical and it ain't as fast as CD burners today. I think it should be enuf though as Sony released a MD based DV camcorder before, which writes DV video onto the MD in real time.

This device will have both MP3 player's and MD's advantages.

All the big Electronic Manufacturers out there please hire me for product design :)

Hmm... seems I've had a change of heart on MD.

I'm finding the 1x recording to be a pain in the ass now. Decided to return my mz-r70 and buy dreamcast gear instead. It's not bad, but not quite for me.

Without spending a lot of dough, it's hard to get optimal conditions for using an MD. The optical out is pretty damn useful if you get one.

good call on the MZ-R900, Zoson. I wish i could have gotten to this thread earlier.

the MZ-R900 has excellent battery life and MDLP (MD Long Play, up to 4X 74min., about 5 hours/MD). but realisticaly only 2X is good for music, which means you can fit about 150 minutes/MD, which is great. I have one myself and I love it.

I have been a longtime user of MD and just cannot justify those silly low-capacity high memory stick prices low music quality MP3 players. I would one of those new Cd MP3 players, or those HD players, but they are just too huge. The aesthetic factor of having a nice MD player weighs much more.

i would like to dispute some claims about the MT-77...first of all that it does NOT have a USB cradle. it has a CHARGING cradle. the USB connecton (which allows for digital transfer and labeling of titles) costs an extra $180 US over the $350 market price. the extra money is not worth it. also, the MT-77 only has a 12 hour battery life vs. the MZ-R900's 21 hour life.

to answer another question, you can record an MD (supposedly) up to a million times before they die so realistically they will NOT wear out.

another great use for an MD recorder is that you might record lectures an concerts live, which you cannot do with MP3 players. with up to 5 hours or recording time/MD, if you are in college it makes for a great investment over those silly tape recorders.

If you would like to get a recording deck that integrates with your computer well, get the MDS-PC3, which is a sony deck with a USB connection that facilitates digital music transfer and labeling. It goes for 399 on crutchfield and about 300 on video-direct.com. It also has MDLP. You can buy a cheap player to go with that.

Wow, I just bought an MP3 player and you guys almost made me regret my decision, almost...

Yeah space limitations bug me, and I'm not about to spend $120 for a 64mb multimedia card. I can live with 10-12 songs a day though, that's not really a huge deal for me.

The ups of this thing are great though. It is so freaken small its unbelieveable. That'll make it hard for all the junkies and dumb sh1ts at my school to steal it (I can just hide it in a pocket they probably won't look through if they ever do break into my gym locker). Another thing is that I have 1500 MP3s, and recording them to minidisks and keeping track of them would be a pain. Whenever I want to put a new song on my mp3 player I can just sit for a minute while it records and I've got it. Really easy and fast to use. Not to mention that the sound quality at 160kbps is not much different than a CD, at least not to me, even at high volumes. And finally the battery life. 2AAA will get me 10 hours, that's pretty damn good IMO.

Its different for everyone, some people would want a minidisk for the space (not a big deal to me), but this MP3 player is perfect for me. BTW, I got the compaq Ipaq one for $210, plus I've got myself a $50 mail in rebate to send in. Not bad at all, althought I still want just a little more space.

wow i havent seen that particular model before...interesting. they would a pretty good alternative to those regular CD-size MP3 players and flash memory MP3 players. controls look a little wacky, but once some big names release them...

i might add, MD players aren't for everyone. some people don't have the patience to record real-time, or the time to organize all their music into lots of little discs. i think it's more for audiophiles.

for those who just want to carry music around occasionally and have it be easy, MP3 players are great, since it takes so little time to d/l music to it, and there's a lot less work involved (titling, marking tracks, rearranging compositions). in addition, with the release of these new CD/MP3 players, the race is a little tighter than us MD supporters would like to admit...

i doubt MD will ever take off in the US...but hey, i like it and i just get all my stuff from Japan.

I figure I'll wait for a very slim (sony slim) cd based mp3 player.

The size of the md was great, but I'm too busy to record at 1x. a 12 minute burn of a cd works out for me a lot better, and no issues with going digital > analogue > digital to move my music to MD.

A straight up cd player would be good too. less than 1/2 the price and still sounds great.
