Zoson! get the Sharp MT-77!! I used to be all about the R900 until this thing came out, the R900 is about 20mm thick, the MT-77 is only 16.8! big difference when you accually look at it! Both have MDLP, the MT-77 also has a cool imac looking docking USB cradle, which is ready to transfer sound and labels! And plus it has the 3 different colored LED lights each representing a different activity the unit is doing! Very cool! And if you look on the FS/FT forums, Shearer has one of these for sale for only $355!

so far looks like MT-77 winning :) there really isnt that much choice here in the US cuz most of the good MD's are still in japan! Some of the very good ones like the MT-77 get imported! :) Another option would be the Sony R91, but that doesnt have MDLP and not as many cool features as R900 or MT-77

not very likely, but if you take them snowboarding and fall on them alot, then yes, there will be a point when they might not work as well...

a lesson i learned the hard way! :)

It still works fine and the sound quality is just awesome.

No need to worry.

Stifko, the link to the manual for that stereo system is here:
XRH66MD Aiwa Manual in PDF Format

Btw, it records from CD to MD digitally, records from radio, and has the goofiest feature....it'll let you record karaoke - as in your voice and the sound from CD onto MD (or just your voice, your choice). Weird feature to bother with, but it's there. I've used the record from radio feature, it comes in handy sometimes 'cause it'll record 2 1/2 hours and can be set on a timer so I don't miss something I can't be around for. It says that the digital in works only for CD, but I'm eventually going to test that out by hooking up my DVD player and we'll see what happens. :) Kinda curious about that.... Anyway, since I'm not getting a kickback for selling the darn things I'm NOT going to try translating the whole manual for you (which of course really means I'm not entirely sure WHAT else it'll do...hehehe).

Hope this answered a few questions for you...

EDIT: It's official, I'm manual-reading handicapped! Doh. The optical OUT is from CD, the optical IN can be from any source. So yeah, DVD players, etc., should be able to run through it and be recorded from. Hmmm...

the discs are very sturdy, they are enclosed in a plastic case, like the old cdroms were with their caddies. i've heard of people running over a md disc with a car and it still worked fine.

Ahh, so will I be able to use them over and over? not like a CD-RW that can only be used x amount of times?

Zoson, have you thought about going to Minidisc.org and reading up on some of this? Might save you some misunderstandings and help you make an informed decision.. It's a lot of money to invest in something then find it's not quite what you thought you were getting. :)

I thought I might add this it's a little funny. Back in the day when mini disc first come out I had a little bit of money so I thought I would get one. Then what did the salesman show me. A competing standard, the Phillips DCC. I've still got it but man what a bad decision(for popularity anyway). The best thing it has over MD is that it can play regular cassette tapes. Beat that. Now if I could only find blank and prerecorded music. Anyone else have one of these?
