As far as crappy cheap McDonalds goes the double cheeseburger is far superior to the mcdouble, the extra piece of cheese makes it.

It really does. Around here a McDouble is around $1.50 and a double cheeseburger about $1.80. They have a "2 for $3" selection though. You can get a double cheeseburger and say a six piece mcnugget for $3. It's actually a pretty solid value.

There is some kind of deal here in So Cal that has been going on for a while now. Two sausage mcmuffins with egg for 4.30 to go. Just had two a couple days ago. I like them, so I have been eating them about once a week lately.

Imagine my surprise when I went up to SF and asked for the 2 mcmuffin combo and the lady gave me the "wtf is wrong with you" stare. I paid $8 or $9 for 2 sausage mcmuffins w/ egg.

Few things...

#1 - I remember growing up in the early 2000s and they had 29 cent hamburgers and 39 cent cheeseburgers.. man they sure have inflated in price since then...

#2 - I haven't been to McD or any fast food place in ages. Only exception I'll give is for Chik-Fil-A, and I haven't been there in a good year either. I define fast food as anything with a drive-thru.

I wonder how they even manage to sell a burger for only $1. Maybe I don't want to know. :p

That's just it. They're counting on making the profit on the drink and fries, finding that doesn't work a lot of the time (people were picking it only because cheap food) so the price rose. It used to be that a double cheeseburger was a dollar menu item, and was $1.00, before they came up with the McDouble, then raised its price.

^ I don't savor $1 burgers so it's just about a quick cheap refueling. If I was eating more leisurely I'd buy something else, not at McDonalds if there were other choices.
It just seems like that would barely be enough time to chew two of them to a comfortable swallowing size.

.

Are you sure you have the right decade? I remember them costing more than that in the '90s, around $0.59.

Yes it is. JUST enough time to consume two if you're hungry enough to stop at McD, without it being a choking hazard (I'd get a water if I didn't already have some). I suppose some people can eat faster than others. If it's not good food and you just want to stop being hungry, why eat it any slower than necessary? It's not a regular visit for me, I eat McDonalds maybe 3 times a year.

When did they start charging more than $1 for items on the dollar menu?

When it stopped being a dollar menu and became the "Value menu".

Back in high school youd go out during lunch or after school and get whats called a "McGangbang", one McDouble and a McChicken, both of which cost exactly $1.09 after tax. For years you could get a disgusting, mostly filling cheap meal for a couple bucks and a quarter.

RIP Dollar Menu... it's more about the 2 for x.xx deals now... I usually do a BOGO Free Big Mac, plus a 2 for $3 small fry + McChicken. Mmmm calories. And I only weigh 155lbs in case you're wondering.

where do you live for that menu?
Long Island. They have a bunch of stuff on the 2 for $3. McDouble (maybe now removed), McChicken, Chicken Grill Wrap, Small Fries, and 2 others I always overlook (probably apple pies and/or McFlurry).

The McD's phone app is where the BOGO free Big Mac coupons frequently appear though, worth the download.

It was in the 90's if I remember. It was I think Tuesdays and Thursdays where they would be that price. We would come home with like 20 hamburgers for the five of us.

Oh look. ATOT, home of the only people in the world who don't eat McD's. I'm calling shens.

I love the McDouble and the McChicken. That is practically all I eat there. Cheap and tastey...but no I don't eat there a lot.
