Why is it parents let kids do dangerous stuff instead of wrapping them in bubble wrap and storing in a cool dry place until 18?

...I wonder how many instances of "something [exactly] like this" do lead to such tragedies. Maybe it is a rare occurrence because, I don't know, most people aren't dumbfuck enough to hand a loaded Uzi to an 8 year-old; because 100% of the time they do that, an accident happens.

I saw one video somewhere of some guy letting a young girl shoot a high powered rifle with a scope up to her eye with the butt of it over her shoulder.

That was like abuse, some people should just be on the Darwin list to begin with and not be allowed to have kids.

I have plenty of guns myself, but there is just plain stupidity, you know.

This. There's absolutely nothing wrong with allowing a kid to learn to shoot a weapon. However, you don't give them an automatic. And personally, I wouldn't let them use a semi-automatic either. Further, you need to be careful with the caliber (or how much the rifle/gun kicks), keeping in mind basic conservation of momentum. I guarantee that if my kids, when little, attempted to hit a target shooting a 3" magnum deer slug or 3" turkey load in a 12 gauge, they'd hit the target, and there's absolutely no way to know which way the gun would be pointed after that shot. Must likely upward, with the child on the ground on his back, if he kept control of the gun.
 
I shot dad's 30-06 a few times when I was in middle school, and the barrel would climb a good forty degrees, but I was experienced and it was a bolt action so there was no chance of accidental refire. The .243 worked much better for me since the recoil was less but the gun weighed almost as much. Automatic + light gun weight + noob is the absolute worst case scenario. An old heavy bolt-action .22 with a 10-round magazine is just about perfect for a responsible kid.
 
people keep saying the uzi was automatic, I'm pretty sure automatic weapons aren't legal unless grandfathered. Semi auto yes but not full auto.
 
I'd love to comment about this - but I just can't figure out how to clean up my thoughts about the situation and put into words that would be suitable for posting, so I'll just hope that some lessons are learned from the horrible event.

The instructor was an idiot. This is natural selection at work.

Yes, there are semi-auto Uzi's available on the market, which are as safe to operate as any vanilla pistol. But this range advertises the fact that they offer NFA firearms for use, including automatic mini-Uzis and Uzis. An automatic Uzi requires quite of bit of effort to keep on target for seasoned firearms users. For a 9yo girl? Insane.

I can understand why liberals want automatic weapons banned. If you freak out and hold the trigger down, a semi automatic weapon still only shoots 1 time.
