Hard to say, since I'm not really a gamer anymore...watching movies/TV, listening to music.

2600+, 512 megs RAM, 8500DV (doh), .5 terabytes storage, 2001FP...with sound output to a $10K system :p

All of my specs beat the average.

But a lot of people use OpenGL over Direct3D. I use Direct3D... am I crazy? What's the benefit of OpenGL?

Pretty equal. But that's the average PC playing on Steam or that took the survey, not the "Average" PC as the OP's title suggests.

IMHO since survey results almost 50/50)

2.0 on my "main" desktop.

RAM - 256-512MB

512MB.

Video - Radeon 9800 series

This beats me. I think I have a GeForce 4 MX. :p

OS - Windows XP

Whatever, can't quantify this one.

Net connection - 256Mb/s

WTF?! :Q

Display Res: 1024 x 768, 16-bit

Mine's higher.

Preferred Optical: DVD-ROM

I don't have an optical drive in my main desktop.

Free HD space - 10-20GB
Total HD Space - 70-80GB

That's not enough.

The majority of Steam users are colourblind morons.

FWIW, that's their gaming resolution and bid depth.

Mine is pretty much exactly like that, except I run in 1280x1024 32-bit, and I have more HD space.

Higher... but:

Video - Radeon 9800 series

The average system looks like it has a considerably crappier card based on Valve's poll. 9800 just happened to be the most popular at ~11%.
