Currently 7% rating on RottenTomatoes. Only 15 reviews so far, but still definitely not good news.

64% community rating however. Might be fun to watch as a mindless violent action flick.

The only good "mindless violent action flick" is one that is rated R (e.g. Rambo)

Well FWIW one of the critics lumped Max Payne into the same category as Die Hard 4 and said that both movies sucked, so personally I think they're mostly full of shit.

Die Hard 4 was terrible though.

PG-13. LOL.

Supposedly they only trimmed 6 seconds of footage from what they originally had in order to get the PG-13 rating, so its not like they changed a lot.

But if what remains is still awful, then it doesn't make any difference whether its R or PG-13.

Doesn't matter if trimming only 6 seconds saved it from being R. Bambi could have been rated R if they would have shown Bambi's mother getting field gutted...that would have been only a few seconds of footage...

If anything that's viral bait to get all the teenies to show up and fork over their money, "yeah! this movie was almost R, we're badasses! After the movie, lets go smoke some cigarettes!". Classic movie exec stunt...they aren't trying to make a valid movie for the art of it, they're trying to make money by preying upon the ignorant.

Yes it was. It even rehashed retarded action movie cliches like a 110 lb half-asian femme fatale who magically kicks everyone's ass and whom the hero refuses to kill or even incapacitate, thus allowing her to go unconscious then wake up right when he turns his back, thus making him fight her all over again. And when he finally DOES kill her, it's obviously not by just shooting her like he did to the hundred other MALE bad guys. She just falls down an elevator shaft almost completely by accident. Congratulations, you've cut the balls John McClane. You even put the fucking PC vs Mac guy in it.

I imagine that as more critics see the film in the coming days it will get more better reviews. I still think it one of the better action flicks. Probably the best way to describe is to say its uneven. At times I thought it was great, and at other times pretty bad...

I thought this describes the movie pretty well:

Max Payne is a dumb film with a great conceptual hook from a director who visualizes better than he dramatizes. Given all the missed opportunities and just plain dumb turns of the script, it should be simply awful, yet the resonance of the mythic imagery and potential of the premise creates a fascinating film in the margins of the pulp story in the foreground. And the very movement of the film, which flows not so much narratively as visually, carried forward on the wings of its demon visions, creates an existence that hovers above the literal turns the story eventually takes. Moore?s paintbrush, dipped into the colors of the night, creates a vivid fantasy noir world that moves with a pulp grace that can carry you through all the absurdities simply by its imagery and momentum.

*probably will contain spoilers*

It was as bad of a raping as Indiana Jones. Max Payne, the video game, had a completely plausible story to be used in a movie and they decided to change around things that didn't need to be changed. Like how Max takes Valkyr at the end to go kill BB... yeah, that doesn't happen. In the game, Aesir overdoses Max on Valkyr and leaves him for dead. Also, they had BB kill Max's wife and if I remember correctly, he only kills Max's old partner in the game and it was merely thugs (sent by Aesir) to kill Max's wife. Also, Max's wife worked for Aesir in the movie... she worked for the DA's office in the game.

I just sat there wondering, "Why did they change these things?"

It was good enough, but....(*spoilers*)

Why did the sister have a Russian accent and Mila's character have one for the first scene and then not after that? Pretty bad on the filmmaker's part.

I just saw the movie, and I was kind of disappointed.

It definitely had scenes from the game and some of the same angles. I felt like the game.
I thought, here is the train station bathroom and the action is about to begin.

But it continued to be mostly slow. There were other scenes from the game, but no real action or gun fights.

Eventually it did get to some nice action, but in a PG-13 movie it was short and not at all graphic.

Either way, if they ever do make a sequel about going after the company boss, I would see it, but mostly to hope for some proper game violence.

Anybody know of a good place with good plot outlines of the games? I would like to remember some details about what happens in the game, but unfortunately I don't have the time to play them. To bad as they would probably play nice on modern hardware.

Wiki has a pretty good outline.

I couldn't believe how poorly they translated the story to film, to be honest the movie was exactly the opposite of the games story:

* Alex wasn't some grungy cop that was his ex-partner.

* Jim Bravura WAS NOT A SKINNY BLACK MAN!

* Jack Lupino felt way too fake and it seemed like 90% of the film was about him were in the game you kill him at the half way point because he was just a pawn (a drugged up whack job pawn).

* Mona WASN'T a Russian brat that walked around in dominatrix but was a was a very strong woman with a point.

* AND WHERE THE **** WAS VALD!?

* B.B wasn't a 50-something family friend that worked security at the company and he wasn't the main focus of the game and wasn't the person you faced off with on the top of the Aesir building.

* When did tattoo artist become walking Wikipedias?!

* Nicole Horne had 1 minute of screen time and was alive at the end of the movie (sadly that means they want to they and make a sequel, god help us if they do).

* Max did not drink the drug to become super bad ass and run around guns blazing (though the garage scene with the MP5s was pretty bad ass, for a second they made me believe the movie was going to pickup) and all the crazy dark angles were annoying after a bit.

* THE DRUG WASN'T BLUE GOD DAMNIT! HOW HARD WAS THAT!? It wouldn't have impacted the story at all if you had just left it green!

It was fitting that the train station was the point were the movie went wrong because it felt like I was on a train that had derailed and was thrashing all over the place.

I went and saw it with two of my friends. One only played a bit of the demo (Chris), the other played the first game but not the 2nd (Will) and I played both (many times) and was very familiar with the story. We all agreed it sucked, Chris said the story was so disjointed it was hard to fallow and felt like they couldn't make up their minds on where to go with the plot, I was mad ass hell that they ****ed up the story so bad And Will knew enough about the game to understand why I was so pissed.

All in all I would say don't even rent the movie when it hits DVD if you were a fan of the game because it will make no sense.

I really wonder if people who make these movies, if they even played the game. Ludacris as Jim bravura? I actually laughed out loud in the theater when i saw that.

As a big fan of the games, this was a disappointment.

My movie taste sucks apparently. Maybe it was the visuals that saved the movie for me...

Doesn't matter. If you enjoyed it and felt you got your money's worth thats *all* that matters. Doesn't matter if the movie followed the story or not.. If you liked it you liked it.

I think more people need to understand that :p

17% now lol

Maybe somebody decided the movie was already so convoluted and leaden that throwing in a few swooping, screeching valkyries could only help. They do not.

They didn't change themes at all. There's only one reference to "angels and demons" and it's one character's opinion. The rest is definitely still Norse.

I just laughed at the kids in the theater who apparently weren't old enough to have played the game.

"THAT MOVIE SUCKED BALLS."
"Wait... based on the video game..."
"Hey, for a video game movie that was really good."
"Yeah, that was kinda awesome."

I enjoyed the movie.

I went to see it knowing the story wouldn't likely be all that fantastic, but i loved the dark theme & knew there'd be some action. And in those regards, it did not disappoint.

BTW, who stayed till after the credits to see the last scene?

I found it kinda funny...pretty much everyone in the theatre left but myself & friends, & we didn't even know there was anything after for sure.

I just had feeling there would be.
