BBC Radio Five Live asked for help from a deaf lip reader, Jessica Rees, who read the words phonetically to an Italian translator.
She deciphered the insult as being "you're the son of a terrorist whore" - a translation also carried by many national newspapers in Britain on Tuesday.
The BBC's Ten O'Clock News also called in experts to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:
Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".
He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Shens. I've seen the video, there's no way he had time to say, "no, calm down. you're a lliar, I wish an ugly death of you and your family. Go f*** yourself."
Besides which that's a horribly convoluted sentence.

"I did insult him, it's true," Materazzi said in Tuesday's Gazzetta dello Sport. "But I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I'm not cultured and I don't even know what an Islamic terrorist is."

I think Materazzi is lying about the terrorist part, and about the mother part. That's a twoferin lying.
Red Card?
Ref never heard it.

Big deal. Those guys trash talk all the time. No words should allow a person to physically attack someone else on the field. If you do attack someone, prepare to face the consequences....hence a red card. I feel no sympathy for Zidane and I'm sure it was part of the Italians' game plan to try to get into his head. It happens in all sports....the mental part of the game to see if the guy will lose his cool. Tough crap to Zidane as he will always be remembered for potentially costing his team the cup.

the #1 rule in any sport is no matter what is said you don't react. Its the reaction that gets caught and penalized RARELY the impetus for the actions. ZZ should have been a professional and just kept walking.

That's not always true. Sometimes you react and don't get caught then the other guy reacts to your reaction and gets caught. That happens a lot in basketball.

What's the big deal? I find it great that a French guy stand up for himself given all the bad press about how wimpy France is lately.
Italy guy insults French soccer player, French player headbutts him, Italian guy cries - Italy wins World Cup End of story.
Yeah, I vote ZZ as the next action movie star too.

corrected. Bottom line, you dont get paid to do that stuff......especially in the final game, in OT when your team has been on the offensive all OT.
what player replaced ZZ in the PKs?

Since Zidane got red carded, France could not sub a player in for him for the shootout. So technically, no one replaced Zidane for the penalties. However, there was a player that took a penalty that normally would not have been in the first 5 with Zidane in the match, but I couldn't tell you who that would have been. Also, France only took 4 penalties since Italy clinched the win on their 5th attempt, so it could have been whoever was going to take the 5th shot that was Zidane's "replacement".

True. To say that ZZ lost France the World Cup is really stretching it. There were only 10 minutes left in the 2nd OT. Most likely than not, the game would have ended in a tie anyways. It was David Trezeguet who missed the PK for France, and most likely he would still have taken a PK even if Zidane did not get sent off.
You can take the man out of the rough neighborhood, but you can't take the rough neighborhood out of the man.
