Big deal. Those guys trash talk all the time. No words should allow a person to physically attack someone else on the field. If you do attack someone, prepare to face the consequences....hence a red card. I feel no sympathy for Zidane and I'm sure it was part of the Italians' game plan to try to get into his head. It happens in all sports....the mental part of the game to see if the guy will lose his cool. Tough crap to Zidane as he will always be remembered for potentially costing his team the cup.

That's not always true. Sometimes you react and don't get caught then the other guy reacts to your reaction and gets caught. That happens a lot in basketball.
What's the big deal? I find it great that a French guy stand up for himself given all the bad press about how wimpy France is lately.

Since Zidane got red carded, France could not sub a player in for him for the shootout. So technically, no one replaced Zidane for the penalties. However, there was a player that took a penalty that normally would not have been in the first 5 with Zidane in the match, but I couldn't tell you who that would have been. Also, France only took 4 penalties since Italy clinched the win on their 5th attempt, so it could have been whoever was going to take the 5th shot that was Zidane's "replacement".

True. To say that ZZ lost France the World Cup is really stretching it. There were only 10 minutes left in the 2nd OT. Most likely than not, the game would have ended in a tie anyways. It was David Trezeguet who missed the PK for France, and most likely he would still have taken a PK even if Zidane did not get sent off.
It's impossible to say. Having your captain thrown off the field, and then realizing what he did is a hell of a blow. I wouldn't doubt that it had something to do with Trez missing the PK.

Some casual fans in the WC final thread have exaggerated Zidane's classiness by confusing that with his crisp, artistic play. Sportsmanship and his magical skills are two different things. At the moment the incident happened, I was actually kind of pleased by his reaction. I knew Materazzi had spewed some form of cheap shot, and although Zidane should have maintained his composure, he reacted in the heat of the moment. Materazzi curled into a fetal position like a big baby.
