Some casual fans in the WC final thread have exaggerated Zidane's classiness by confusing that with his crisp, artistic play. Sportsmanship and his magical skills are two different things. At the moment the incident happened, I was actually kind of pleased by his reaction. I knew Materazzi had spewed some form of cheap shot, and although Zidane should have maintained his composure, he reacted in the heat of the moment. Materazzi curled into a fetal position like a big baby.
The best quote came from Zizou's teammate Thierry Henry:
You can take the man out of the rough neighborhood, but you can't take the rough neighborhood out of the man.
Personally, I don't think this really tarnishes Zidane's legacy. However, it does diminish his stature from where it would have been if France had won the championship, amongst the top all-time greats such as Pele.
I originally thought people were going to throw him in to the fire (public opinion wise), but a lot of the soccer fans (non Italians) I?ve spoken to actually approve and like the head butt. Even the media didn't react to it the way I though they would (you know, idiots who never watch the sport like Regis commenting on the head butt). I think this will blow over and people will still remember Zidane as the amazing player that he is/was.
