I DON'T SMOKE. But still I have a preference for matches whenever I need to light something. There's just something about the flick, the sound of the match catching, the sulphurous smell, that I like. It's an addicting sensation.

I particularly like those old school long stick matches:

these are a joy to light.

....

Am I starting to sound like an arsonist?

When I smoked I preferred a Zippo. If a Zippo wasn't available, I liked matches for aesthetic quality, and disposable lighters(bic is the only choice) for practicality.

Never use 'em any more, but matches are the best. There's just something special about the 'ceremony' of lighting up the old fashioned way.

Butane only for fine Cigars though. Matches or Zippo are a no-no!

I'm simple, bic lighter. It's easy, clean, cheap, compact and reliable.

With matches they can be hard to light. When it is windy a nice zippo can light anything, while matches just fail.

Non-smoker.

Cigarettes ... zippo, due to convenience
Cigar ... wooden matches
Bonfires ... whatever's handy

Bic lighter. Not those cheapo gas station bucket ones. I had one of those explode once just from lightly tapping it on... something.

Nonsmoker, lighter.

No lingering smell, nothing to throw away until end-of-life after many ignitions, and the good ones are refillable.

Back when I was working my 1st paycheck job, at the car wash, a lot of clients have matches in their car. I would collect these matches, so I ended up with lots and lots of matches. Some of the match boxes look like cigarette boxes, so I kept a few of the fancy ones.

I also have 2 Zippo Lighters.
