Gov. Patrick unveiled a bill on Wednesday that would tighten access to high-powered rounds of ammunition, create four new types of firearms-related crimes and mandate buyers to undergo background checks before purchasing weapons at gun shows. It would also restrict gun owners to purchasing one firearm a month.

The bill would also allow Mass. courts to send all relevant mental health records to the state's criminal justice information system so the federal government could include this information in a national gun license registry.

It doesn't appear that this is the same legislation proposed by MA representative http://www.facebook.com/DavidLinsky, which at least according to this link http://natick.patch.com/articles/rep-linsky-files-legislation-aimed-at-reducing-gun-violence#c (I looked and cannot find the official send from Linsky himself and open to the idea this link is partially bogus, although the interview on fox with Linksy does mention some of its tenets) includes at 25% tax on ammunition AND storage of grandfathered assault weapons at gun clubs or some other storage.

Some of the stuff MA is proposing is clearly absurd, such as no more than one gun/month (accomplishes nothing) and a 25% tax, if the law is to curb gun violence. Its intent cannot be concluded as other, at least in part, to simply lower gun ownership overall, make it more burdensome, less of a hobby in general for legal owners.

Again, another place I don't give a shit about. Massachusetts people can sell each other into slavery for all I care, I'm certainly not going to fight for any of their rights if they're surrendering them willingly if not demanding they be curtailed.

We have most of those stupid laws here in CA. The thing that is the most disturbing is the potential to tax ammo. Again, the people who get screwed from this is the law abiding citizen. What a joke.

aww how cute. Liberals taxing something more. So cute. Is there no problem they can't fix with a tax?

Like the factory saying - If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

It's been obvious for a LONG time that the anti-gun nut job agenda has nothing to do with reducing crime, or saving lives, or children, or communities.

Liberal logic: Tax guns and prevent people from buying more than one gun a month. That way if someone, for some reason, decides to buy one legally they will make sure its a big one. Just like prohibition, who would bother making wine coolers when you could make moonshine? Its the same amount of illegal, but you get more in the end.

Massachusetts is home to both Colt, Savage Arms, and Smith & Wesson. They produce over a million guns a year in Massachusetts. Hopefully they move to gun friendly states if it passes.

Workers will just take over the factories. They have the guns.

If you think they are dumbasses you're probably a liberal. They make that mistake all the time.

You are one delusional fuck. No those factories do not belong to "the workers" they belong to the owners of those companies and those companies will move and take their assets, IP, etc to more business and gun friendly states because of the insanity and knee-jerk reactions of the left always creates unintended effects in society when the left tries to control and over regulate a basic freedom such as the right to bear arms.

The companies operating in MA sell guns in other states. Moving presents HUGE operational costs with little gain. One state passing stricter laws isn't going to make them move. They'll still sell their guns in MA no matter where they're located..

I think we've hit an impasse. The two sides are not speaking the same language even.

The anti-gun lobby will continue to put pressure on legislators and will continue to get things passes as long as the pro-gun lobby continues to simply pass the blame on criminals and not the tools they're using.

Instead of just frothing at the mouth I'd ask a few basic questions. First has there been crime committed where someone went out and bought a bunch of guns all at once and then used them? Would a background check and a limit on the number of firearms they can buy help curb crime? Would coordinating mental health records with the criminal justice system help?

Ammo tax is a great way to punish the exact opposite of who they want to punish. A box of handgun ammo generally costs 10-20 bucks for 50 rounds. Someone needs to shoot up a school, they would really only need 2 maybe 3 boxes worth. Big whup, nobody intent on shooting up a school is going to balk because they have to pay an extra 10 bucks. But the people who shoot for sport or fun (aka responsible gun owners), can go through 150-250 rounds every time they go to the range, which could be weekly. These people buy rounds by the thousands because it's cheaper that way, not because they want to kill a lot of people. So they're the ones who will end up paying out the wazoo. But a gang banger who wants a gun doesn't give a shit about practicing, he'll just buy a box of whatever ammo at Walmart and throw it in the closet.

Tax ammo in Mass? Report all ammo sales in NY as well investigate any large ammo purchases?

I'll do exactly what I already offered my buddies in NY... If they can't drive across state lines to buy their ammo... Then I will buy and bring it up on my next trip to NY. Ironically, the law doesn't restrict that.

Big liberal authoritarians just cant help themselves. Never waste a crisis to tax people more and deny them rights.
