I hated this game. Way too much dialogue. I mean I like dialogue, but this game is hours of it. Plus nearly every place looked the same.
 
Guys, Mass Effect was really light on the dialog. Add the cumbersome radial-like menu where the text options didn't always match what was said, plus the aspect where the Paragon and Neutral options said the exact same thing most of the time but only the Paragon option gave the Paragon points and you had a really sad dialog system.

I need to try this out, at least during the non-combat sections. I generally like the game a lot, but my biggest criticism is the speed at which you run and the lack of any upgrades to improve that. I must have spent at least 50% of my time in the game so far just running around and moving between different areas.

If your idea of perfect amount of dialog is planescape torment, then yes

if your idea is a game you can play the hell out of at your own pace, then it is horribly cumbersome. Example:

"yes dear, i know it is 11pm, i'll be in bed as soon as this dialog tree and cutscene is done!"

3 hours later

"sorry babe, dumbass is still spouting lore no one really cares about due to no background..."
 
Look... The game sucks, I went into going I have no clue what this is going to be like. Little did I know that it was going to be terrible. The whole being paragon or renegade shit really didn't seem like it mattered. It had never changed a conversation and I had even put in cheats so where I maxed both out. It didn't matter, it didn't give me any new dialogue or anything. It didn't say, "Oh you're just too badass to do this. Oh wait, nevermind you are a super stupid kind whack job."

Does that shit ever pan out or what? The game is NOT an FPS... Holy shit it is not, it requires no skill at all. What it does require is a lot of waiting and healing. Because the guns, suck. They don't allow for aiming at all unless you use the sniper rifle. (Assault rifle = bullets fly to your right not your left) I ended up using the sniper rifle the whole game because it was the only thing that worked at killing.

Anyway, boring thread... Hope you all die in a fire.

Hmm, it sounds like you simply suck. I never used a sniper rifle, yet I didn't have any problems beating the game. I only found myself in a tough spot once.

I didn't even like Mass Effect that much, but your comments are unfounded and plain dumb.
 
Coming off of the action packed hilarity of Battlefield BC, I too was ready to throw in the towel with this one, barely able to scrape a couple thousand credits together in the beginning, weak powers with the infiltrator class, mainly using the wimpy pistol. Then I got the hang of it and ran around space picking up duplicate items and selling them for beaucoup credits. I was about 75% through the story mode when I had 5 million credits and 500+ omnigels from rarely failing decryptions, gunning around with one character trained in AR with 336 damage, the other character in SG with 320 damage, both upgraded with damage mods and tungsten cutter VI ammo and my character with a decked out pistola and mods. I just mowed over all enemies and focused on the story and atmosphere and I thought it was pretty well done. I haven't played KOTOR so I don't know how it compares, but I dig the 80's synthesizer sound of the music and the rarity, remote feel, and hopelessness of the Prothean parts of the story. A lot of the outdoor levels were strikingly good looking as well. I appreciate the fact that it's an RPG without turn-based combat. Even though the combat and AI could be better, I just can't play TBC for long ever since FFVII. It's a story driven game with more dialog than other games but it wasn't as bad as MGS titles (not saying the MGS series is bad in general). I can't see myself pulling through another play even with a different class and going renegade instead, but the game felt tailored for my experience and ultimately slightly more satisfying than my favorite game of the year so far (GTA4).

There are various dialogue options that are only available depending on where you stand and towards the end of the game it will have an impact.

No, it's not an FPS and you seem to be unable to grasp the concept of dice rolls. You can aim with any weapon.

I can see why some wouldn't like it, but it's your own damn fault for stumbling into a game you knew nothing about. Read (or watch) any review on it and they all mention how story heavy the game is. I'm not normally into RPGs but liked this one quite a bit. I've had it for a while but still haven't beaten it. Just haven't had the time. If I did I'd replay it at least once more just to go with a different class.
 
The game seems to be geared towards younger teenagers. Me, being in my mid-20's, it's not exactly catching for me. Not enough action, but then again, I never really liked RPGs anyway.

I thought it was the opposite? Hot blooded teens cry for brainless action while the older, nerdier crowd calls for hardcore RPGs.

RPGs always seem like they are geared toward older people to me, probably because they got big a long time ago.

I'm 30 and I really enjoyed it. Of course, I've been an RPG fan since the days of Wizardry on the Apple II 😛

Lord. I don't think I owned a PC until I was 16 and it was a Dell Celeron.

I knew it was an RPG before I bought it of course. However I thought if I was going to try any RPG I figured Mass Effect would of been the best place to start. Maybe If I had a little more time, I could get into it more.

i gave up as well (for the pc at least). the Fish eye camera gives me a headache and the combat is pretty repetitive.

I was (close to being) born with a keyboard in hand, my father bought our family a 386 (top chip at the time) Gateway when I was around 4 (still remember when the delivery man brought it, made that much of an impact apparently). Played PC games ever since, my father stopped playing games in favor of cable TV a few years back though... I am still going strong🙂
 
OK, so, as guy who:
Loved Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Deus Ex,
Hates Final Fantasy since it moved to 3D,
Greatly disliked Neverwinter Nights 1 and only marginally approved of Neverwinter Nights 2,
Despises all MMO's with a passion,
Loved KOTOR 1 and liked KOTOR 2 even with its flaws,
Found STALKER to be a little too aimless,
Loved Elder Scrolls 3 and hated Elder Scrolls 4,


Would Mass Effect be something I should at least look into?
