MSNBC's Martin Bashir apologizes for offensive Palin remark

MSNBC commentator Martin Bashir issued an apology on Monday for suggesting that someone should defecate on former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The remark, which Bashir made on his MSNBC program, sparked a firestorm of criticism. Bashir was responding to a comment Palin made in which the former Alaska governor compared the U.S. debt to slavery.

On Monday, an apologetic Bashir addressed his audience:

Last Friday, on this broadcast, I made some comments which were deeply offensive and directed at Gov. Sarah Palin. I wanted to take this opportunity to say sorry to Mrs. Palin and to also offer an unreserved apology to her friends and family, her supporters, our viewers, and anyone who may have heard what I said.My words were wholly unacceptable. They were neither accurate, nor fair. They were unworthy of anyone who would claim to have an interest in politics, and they have brought shame upon my friends and colleagues at this network, none of whom were responsible for the things that I said. And at a place where we try every day to elevate political discourse and to focus on issues that matter to all of us.

Bashir went on to say that he deeply regrets his words and that he learned "a sober lesson" and intends to learn from the experience.

His apology concluded:

My hope is that it will renew in me a spirit of humility and humanity, that looks for the good and that builds upon the great things that this country has to offer to all of us, regardless of our political persuasion. This will be my guiding light and compass in the days ahead. But once again, I am truly sorry for what I said on Friday.

Why do you have his name in quotation marks?

Palin's remarks were offensive and stupid to anyone with even the most basic knowledge of American history (something which, it is abundantly clear, Palin lacks). Martin Bashir is himself an arrogant, but smart, blowhard who loves nothing more than pointing out the stupidity of others. In this instance I am more offended by his arrogant tone than the content of what he said, which I really don't have a problem with.

The tail between the legs bit is not very sincere. He could care less except that his viewership was cut in half from 16 to 8.

Honestly, who gives a crap. It might be an issue for a reputable news source but it hardly matters in this case.

I would think if anything this incident would have increased his meager viewership. It's not as though MSNBC viewers are likely to be offended by someone using harsh language toward Sarah Palin of all people. I think the real issue is offending advertisers, and MSNBC's fear that this kind of thing worsens the perception that the entire channel is nothing but a left-wing mouthpiece (which of course it is - that's why it exists).

The viewers that left don't like watching a coward who will say anything to please his masters...

The most telling thing about this is that Bashir apologized for his remark. Palin defended her insulting and racist remark. So while he went too far, he's showing he's still far classier than Palin.

I on the other hand will gladly be less classy than Bashir and say that Palin is a stupid wise and beautiful woman.

Gotta love the tolerance of liberals. It's alright for him to say this crap yet the liberals get upset if one of their guys is attacked.

This Martin Bashir guy is a complete idiot and a leftist. His show and network are complete BS and it still amazes me how this moron is still on the air.

I hate to say she has a point. when you must work for the man, free 3-6 months a year or go to jail it has a resemblance to slavery.

Who said it was ok for him to say this??

Sorry is your Xanax wearing off again?

Maybe now Sarah can go back to attacking the Pope

I am still waiting for the liberals to call him out in the media.

Sorry are you out of troll and race baiting threads?

Go troll somewhere else.

make me 🙂

Notice how you've just gone from, "well nobody said it was ok" to "well nobody called him out"

PRICELESS!

What Palin said isn't racist- the left is so blundering and stupid they throw that term out there with any and everything. It's just automatic for so many of them.

As for Bashir, I'm in the 'who gives a f' camp. As charged, he probably staged the whole thing to bring his viewership up from 2 to 4 people. "First I'll go over the top bashing Palin, then I'll read this pre-written drama-queen apology on air! This should make some headlines and get us some attention!"

I didn't see anything wrong with Palin's comment.

Is the large and ever-growing debt going to turn U.S. citizens into being treated like African-Americans were during the times of slavery in this country?

No.

Seriously, is the new "politically correct" standard now that the term "slavery" can only be used to describe something equal to or worse than what the African-American's lived through? To use this word to describe anything of any lesser degree, racist? If our language is changing this much shouldn't we have the new rules written down somewhere?

We are no longer calling the main bedroom in the house the "master bedroom" because that is racist. I only learned of that by complete random chance. What goes on in the master bedroom certainly isn't comparable to what blacks lived through during slavery, so I do agree "master bedroom" is racist...

Excessive debt may not be literal form of slavery but it is a in some ways a form of self-inflicted indentured servitude. Especially for people who naively buried themselves in debt, especially naive and ignorant kids who bought into the jazz that any college degree will automatically lead to a well paying job but now will spend a good chunk of their working adult lives attempting to pay said college debt off.

aha but look at all the "academia" grifters that harvested all that cash from the misled "students". Professor "crook" and the educational institutions are tailoring their counseling and career advise to generate revenue and not necessarily careers and jobs for their student clients.
