What else to women that you'll never meet in real life have to offer you?!?!
Proof of what he'll never get :p
Proof of what I'll never want, that is. I'd rather have a "dull-looking" natural, intelligent woman than some vain slut with mental problems.

Yea, because you know the real Mariah Carey

As much as I'd like to keep my mouth shut, I can't. Pull your head out of your ass - who are you to judge this women based on the little information you know about her?!!?
Isn't that what all celebs are subject to? I prefer not to judge people based on their appearance alone, but when all that you offer to the public is your appearence, what else is there to critique? We've all heard that she had a nervous breadown after the release of her "movie" Glitter. Her acting skills are enough to make me vomit. If I can't respect a person, how can I be attracted to them? We all judge people--celebrities included, so why don't you get off your high horse and realize you do the same thing.

It sad to think that you believe that only thing she offers to the world is her appearance - I guess the fact that she is the best selling female singer in the world really doesn't mean anything, does it?

Her music obviously isn't doing it for him man

. She's just another person on this earth and deserves no pedistol for tallent.

I'm not a fan of her music. I'm not saying that she can't sing, but that particular talent does nothing for me. I generally feel that people who expose themselves like this are "slutty." Not necessarily in the sense that they have a lot of promiscious sex, but in the fact that they "prostitute" their bodies rather than doing something meaningful. Just one man's opinion.

A lot of her music does nothing for me also, but I have to respect a women who is almost 100% responsible for her career. She writes and produces all of her own music, co directs all of her music videos, and controls everything in her life (which is rare in a musician). She has her own record label, writes for other artists, and has single handedly influenced almost all of todays popular music/musicians. She has sold over 150 million records worldwide, has more #1 hits than any other living musician or group (third to only the Beatles and Elvis), out of 6 songs to debut at #1 on the billboard music charts - she has three of them, etc, etc. This is a smart woman - she knows what the public wants and is willing to use that to her advantage.
She has been training her voice her whole life, and was taught by the best (her mother was a professional opera singer). To say that she offers nothing more than her "image" is ludicrous.

Do you know her personally? Saying that she's almost entirely responsible for her career while telling me not to judge her because I don't know her seems a bit like calling the kettle black. I'm not doubting her singing career, even if I don't enjoy her music. She's become very successful, but after hearing her being interviewed and whatnot, I can not say that she's a "smart woman" without bursting into uncontrollable laughter.

She hasn't been very hot for yeasr. She used to be but now she's dumpy and thick. And I hate to be the guy who says that about some woman normally considered to be attractive but let's face it maxim is really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. If not for her notoriety she'd never have a hope in hell of selling a magazine based on her looks alone. Not anymore. What happened to jolene blalock and chicks like that? Now they are hot!

Here's a quote from a recent article from the Mercury News:

"``Honestly, I'm just like a big kid still playing dress, up,'' Carey says. ``It's funny to me when people actually think that it's a sex-symbol image, and I guess it is, but it's more like in the beginning of my career, I really wanted it to be all about my voice, the record company wanted me to be very, almost puritanical in the way that I dressed. And now it's more about having fun."

What I'm thinking of specifically is her appearances on *shudder* TRL. Don't let this make you think I watched that crap* and thus ruining my credibility to argue anything anywhere, but when I was surfing through the channels, I noticed her laughing and generally acting strange. I tuned in to see how insane she would actually be...needless to say I no longer have any respect for her character.

*This includes 99% of MTVs programming, as it is almost all superficial, meaningless sh1t.

If she were to act like shes done all of that then you'd have a case, but she comes off as a complete bitch in all TV specials and wreaks of the high and mighty attitude. She may have done some great things, but shes still human, and really does herself no justice with the way she presents herself to the public.

You picked the single worst appearance she has ever made on television (the day before her "breakdown"), and now she's forever branded in your mind. If you were to be judge by snippetts of the worst time in your life, I'm sure we'd have a "great" image of the person you are. Thankfully that's not the truth.

Note that I said appearanceS. I used the "worst" one as an example, and perhaps that wasn't fair, but it was the one that sticks in my mind the most. As BD231 said, she generally acts rather bitchy and acts as though she's better than everyone. Knowing how to sing and making money doesn't make you a good person. It may make you financially successful, but when you look back at your life and see how much good you've done, isn't that what determines how valuable you've been as a person? She doesn't impress me as a person, end of story.

Dude, you are a retard. God, this is one of those times on anandtech, when you can see someone who just doesn't have the capacity to think logically. Her success is: (1) not something she is "100% responsible" for, and (2) completely fvcking irrelevant to to your argument.

These threads are so incredibly predictable. Someone will post a picture an attention-seeking celebrity (by definition, aren't they all?). People will chime in with their compliments, others will mention that they are only so so, and then the nerds who like her, or who posted it in the first place will get defensive and make comments about how the nay-sayers would never be able to get her anyway. BUT DON'T YOU SEE, YOU DOUCHEBAG, that it's not about whethere we could get her, but about her in relation to the other celebrities that are bandied about! OF COURSE the STANDARD IS HIGHER. From the get go, these aren't real people in our lives, but essentially "pin-ups" in various mediums! I find it HILARIOUS that you idiots can turn around and start castigating us for "judging" them, when their whole Fvcking celebrity existence is based, and survives off of our perception. GOD, people, HOW DUMB are some of you?

Ah, another bash a model, actress, entertainer thread.
Really what is up with this sort of thing?
Sour grapes?
