As I posted before but was misusing the terms, I may be talented in woodworking. I could be good at picking the right wood and cutting and lathing, etc. But, if I cannot build something with that talent then I'm not skilled. Or, in the case of Mariah, she has a talent with, what, an 8-octave range in her voice? But then she turns around and sings total crap and her voice becomes a whiney, squealing, headache-inducing caterwauling. That is not skilled.Originally posted by: luvly
still like Mariah as before? (Sorry, I can't read the entire thread to find an answer, in case you responded previously.)
I used to like Mariah, but I don't like her anymore . . . not even her music. Don't get me wrong: I don't dislike her either. I'm just indifferent toward her.
"Ok...she has talent, then. BUT, she has NO SKILL!"
Okay, now you're confusing me, Conjur. If someone is talented, then why the need for skills? It would seem to come naturally without training. Can talent be tweaked? Yes, but it's a talent because it hardly needs tweaking or fresh training. You must mean skills at an entirely different level and not within the boundaries of her talent, I suppose.![]()

Who watches videos anymore? MTV shows stupid shows and news and crap. VH-1 doesn't show much in the way of videos either. I think there's more in the press (magazines) that covers a wider area. And, these 'pop stars' crossing over to film/tv (Glitter, The Bodyguard). They know they can't sing worth a sh!t so they try something else to boost their marketability and end up dragging themselves down even further."Right...they can reach notes very few people can. Very few.
BUT, the songs they sing, the 'style' they use and the fact they use their bodies to sell albums that are nothing but crap (Loverboy, anyone?) makes them nothing but attention whores in my book. Hell, look at Whitney. Her career was going down so what does she do? Get a boob job.
By stooping to your level I meant the name calling and you know that."
With exception to your first statement, I totally agree with you and feel the same way. The reason I disagree with your first stament, though, is, in my opinion, the musical talent or skill is no longer even required. Technology helps it to be less unendurable, but you can still tell that there's a lack of talent or skill. I would much rather return to just tapes without videos. The whole music video thing is what's messed up the music industry. If I want looks or provocative dressing, I would watch movies, TV programs and fashion shows. The only exception: I wouldn't even mind if the music came with the provocative videos but at least were quality and great! Why is the music industry doing this?

As much as I cannot stand her, she did not say that
