Nobody should be taking up more space than they need in a crowded space. For as long as I remember I've been annoyed by others, usually (but not always) men spreading their legs wide while I have to scrunch up tight, like in the back seat of a car. It may be that I never felt the need to spread my legs as much for whatever reason so I don't get it as much.

But I've seen a lot of people post pictures complaining about manspreading in buses and trains that visibly have empty seats. I've even seen some people justify this by saying that the men (and only men) taking up more than one seat were being intimidating and imposing and contributing to a hostile environment.

I'm sure it is, and if 90% of the population goes on vacation out of town for a week I would probably visit. Otherwise the sheer amount of people and density of people would interfere with any enjoyment there is to be had.

Me, I don't think I can ever remember being at such peace and contentment than when I was somewhere on Mt. Si or Tiger Mountain or Mt. Rainier and can see 360 degrees or close there to, and the horizon is dozens of miles away with nothing but forest and other mountains or hills below me as far as the eye can see.

It's hard describe and not everyone's bag and certainly doesn't make me any better than anyone else, but it's such a stark contrast to a megalopolis. Whenever I look at the northeast I just can't get over how dense it is. And in reality I do know just how more dense much of the world is even compared to the northeast. We are so fortunate to have the amount of space here in the U.S. along with the diversity of climates and ecosystems.

Stephen Fry did a series for the BBC where he visited all 50 states and it was so interesting hearing his perspective coming from England. We take a lot of our natural landscapes for granted.

I grew up on the edge of civilization in the Twin Cities. I own a house 45 miles from downtown. My entire life has been trying to avoid city life. So I understand what you are saying about open space and nobody around. And my ideal landscape would be somewhere in Colorado in the mountains on an island on a lake that is within an island on a lake.

However NYC was an amazing experience. I have never been to a city where I could feel the energy. There is a buzz about the city that is hard to describe unless you have been there.

I really suggest just give a try. Do a 3-4 day weekend. Hit the usual tourist spots and just walk around the city. And enjoy great food. There is an endless supply of it there.

Planning a trip back there in the fall. I cant wait!

Lol, how did I know you would be the first to reply to and contest my comment regarding NYC and the Northeast?!?

I get all pheclempted and my anxiety goes up simply looking at the population density figures of the city and region in question. I have no doubt there are advantages to be had, for example unbelievable Korean food 24/7. The problem is the sheer amount of people would make enjoying whatever delights there are damn near impossible for me to enjoy anyway, making them null and void and thus non starters as it were.

Seattle is about as big as I need or want, and even then is enjoyed perhaps once a month. I can be in Seattle in 20 minutes, yet have seen bears (real bears, not them city bears in suburbs of NY/NJ) outside many times and can be in the mountains in an hour, salt water fishing in no time, Olympic rainforest in an hour (but you have to watch out for those damn Twilight goth tourists, always asking for directions to Forks), incredible wine country in two hours, desert that looks like Arizona minus Cacti in three hours, and more. Watching Orca pods while going to the San Juans for oysters specific to individual bays is always a treat, especially when you take Kenmore Air out of Lake Union in Seattle and fly floatplanes there. Vancouver BC and Portland are really close too, about 2.5 hour drives north and south respectively. I place a tremendous value on being 3 hours or less to so many types of ecosystems and types of landscapes.

If I was born and raised in the Northeast or NY I'm sure I'd feel differently, I fully admit I am conditioned tho way. Of course if I was born in the Northeast or NY I'd probably have one of those accents that makes one instantly come across as a grade A asshole, that would suck.

Has anyone ever commented on any NY accents or inflections on your part by chance? Most important is we each seem to love the areas we live in though reasons for doing so might be vastly different.

I'm no prepper, but does natural disasters or things like water shortages worry you at all when you consider how the population density will effect peoples reaction and handing of it? I seem to recall people going batshit crazy simply losing electrical overnight in NY, I couldn't imagine how the populace would handle a serious disaster. Could be my admittedly biased perception of the city and it's average citizen clouding my judgment too.

You crack me up davmat, or shall I call you Mr. Cosmopolitan. I hate everywhere but my back yard. I will, however, cursing and screaming if a car gets in front of me, go to the store when I get hungry. I think a lot about aqua-culture as maybe a good way to fish AND reduce such trips.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEW

All I remember about NYC is hitching across the country alone to get there and checking into the 5th floor of the YMCA only to discover that the elevator would pass you by if somebody punched a floor below that from a floor above 5. After waiting for God knows how long, I went down the emergency exit which took me outside the building, only to have some Irish cop step in front of me and ask where I thought I was going. Thieves, it seemed were the ones who tried used that exit. What I remember most was the bright red color he turned when I told him to get the fuck out of my way in my perfectly unaccented American English. I did make it to London after that and stayed for two years. Went back last year and enjoyed it immensely. It seems that wherever I go that's where I am. ;)

It may seem strange, but if you go during a big 3-day weekend, like the 4th, the place will be empty. At least that was my experience when my parents took me to NYC for my 13th birthday. That was along time ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were still true.
I grew up in the east, but I live the life you are talking about on the west side of Puget Sound.

Nice. My dream is to retire to a small spread on the Hood Canal or some quiet inlet on the Sound. Start some oyster beds maybe for fun, find out the best place for rockfish, .etc.

I would take my chances with a jury. No way in hell should anyone attempt to plead down on charges like this. If I go to jail I get to joke for 90 days with my cellmates about how I got in here for sitting wrong.

The charges were dismissed by the judge almost immediately. There is no jury.

I bet the jury that convicted him was comprised of a few sensitive women and a few male jurors that were "manspreading" in the juror box!

Why does the term man spreading keep poping the ZZ Top's Pearl Necklace song in my head?

lol

Although to be fair, this* is probably orchestrated by men. We're such silly things.

*Assuming there is a "this". Russian Times would probably not be my first choice for info on NYC. Or, well, anything.

This has to be an onion article lol. "Manspreading". I love our world.
Onion, Russian Times, WTD? Both will probably get you on the NSA's naughty list.

So the other day I rode the bus for a couple hours, the trip being maybe the third time using public transportation in my life. Not trying to stroke my own ego, but when nearly all the seats were occupied I offered my seat to a woman holding a child, and two older women. Each time they graciously declined and seemed almost surprised by my offer. The lady holding a young child was with a guy and he made a point of thanking me for the offer several times and we chatted for a few as well. The guy with the sweet young thing DID NOT thank me or chat after I offered her to sit on my lap however.

Do guys not offer seats to women anymore or something? Maybe it's the boy scout in me but I thought it was still standard behavior for any self respecting guy to offer up your seat as appropriate. I felt uncomfortable when not doing so, what kind of guy lets a woman stand holding her child or an elderly woman stand while you sit?

Obviously rabid militant feminists are exempt of course, or would it piss them off if you insisted they take your seat and make a scene doing so. Hmmmm, might have to experiment with this sometime lol.

I would not be surprised if those complaining of manscaping will also complain in a packed bus I subway that they were oppressed because a male invaded their comfort zone, ignoring their 18" of required buffer zone and space, and thus experienced assault and having several triggers triggered.
It's certainly still a thing in the South, although I don't know about on public transportation (except trains, and trains down here are mostly ticketed seats) but thank you on behalf of the species for being a gentleman.

And I doubt that rabid militant feminists are complaining about manscaping. ;)

Probably because none of them have ever seen it. The type of man who's into manscaping probably doesn't run in the same circles as rabid militant feminists. Just a hunch.

I'm guessing either they've never seen it, or they require it - although I take your meaning. lol

Note that I'm assuming that some rabid militant feminists are straight and some manscaping men are straight, which might be a poor assumption for some values of both "rabid militant feminist" and "straight". :D

A high school friend used to sit extremely wide and it sucked to sit next to him. But he was pushing 300lbs and had big thighs. I never thought to call the police on him... Men have junk there and sitting like a sissy would hurt like no other especially on moving train for 10-15mins. If you are taking up 2-3 seats then it is an asshole move, call them out on it, but a law? So dumb. We've gone so far where making someone a bit uncomfortable on a train ride is an arrestable offense.

Seems like folks could use a reminder on transit manners:

And, yes, the vast majority of complaints are coming from aggressive women feeling they are the ones who deserve the extra personal space.

I suppose the solution to #manspreading would be #nationalcastrationday, right? ;)

Imagine how crowded the subway will be on the day this reaches a crescendo when the radical feminists plan their day of "Womenspreading" to draw attention to their cause. Maybe it can be held in conjunction with a Free the Nipple protest.

Being a man is intimidating, imposing and contributing to a hostile environment in the eyes of the feminist and their sympathizers.

I see the usual RWM SJW's are in this thread jacking each other off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF2TyajIL94
And this video is just for them - pity they never click links to verify sources and see an opposing view. Good news though - it's just cutting off balls! Yeah! With those pesky things out of the way, those icky, awful, smelly, disgusting men will finally be able to fully crush their legs closed and make room for their rightful female rulers! [salute]

You realize, I hope, that that's the general fear of those who actually don't have any????????

No, I suspect that "purse buffering" is entirely justified.

You don't expect them to hold their $800 purse on the floor or in their laps do you?!?!

As far as the OP, if the seats are full and people are standing you should make as much room as you are comfortably able. If you don't you are just a douche but making a law and tying up the court system over it is retarded. It sounds like just another way to make it damn near impossible for the average joe to avoid being harassed by the police.

I think the real issue for ol' Blue is that his ex-wife ate his balls with a side of fave beans and a nice Chianti.

He has never recovered.

Anyone else catch the SJW approach here? Agree with their agenda or be accused of having no balls (though, ironically, that's exactly what a mega-feminist would prefer. How odd. Oh well, duplicity has been the name of the game since the beginning.)

Oh - and the personal attack sent via email was uncalled for. (My mistake for leaving a genuine FS/FT email up.) Just a heads-up that that sort of thing is easy to track.
