Peyton Manning, Broncos make it official: Five years, $96 million

After working late into Monday night, Denver Broncos officials got all the details worked out in the contract for Peyton Manning's services. And as ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported, the deal is very significant -- today, Manning will sign a five-year, $96 million agreement which guarantees that one of the NFL's greatest quarterbacks will finish his career in Denver.

According to Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post, Manning will make $18 million in 2012 with no injury protection. If he passes a March, 2013 physical, guarantees of $20 million will activate for 2013 and 2014, with an undisclosed injury waiver.

Manning will be officially announced as the team's new franchise quarterback at a 3PM ET press conference. The man making the announcement, VP of Operations John Elway, was, of course, Denver's last true franchise quarterback.

As many reports have indicated, the Manning signing will have the Broncos looking to trade Tim Tebow as soon as possible.

On Monday morning, Manning called the three teams in pursuit to let them know their standings - the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans out, and the Broncos in. After that, it was up to the two sides to hammer out the particulars.

"I congratulate Peyton as he heads to a tremendous organization in the Denver Broncos.," Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said in a team statement Tuesday morning. "We wish him nothing but the best as he continues his Hall of Fame career." The Colts released Manning on March 7; their preferable option to paying him a $28 million roster bonus due the next day.

The new collective bargaining agreement will have Manning waiting to talk serious football with some of his new friends.

He can't have official classroom, schematic, or football discussions with the coaching staff until April 16, and he can't have official throwing sessions with the Broncos until that date. He also can't use the team's practice field with the coaching staff present until May 2. However, he can throw to his new receivers away from team's facilities as soon as he pleases. Former Colts teammate and current Denver resident Brandon Stokley may be charged with finding the best field for such a purpose ... if he can avoid more lacrosse-playing kids.

Manning had been throwing to former teammates at Duke University under the supervision of coach David Cutcliffe, who was Manning's offensive coordinator at Tennessee. He threw for the Broncos and 49ers there, and for the Titans at a nearby high school field.

AFC was considered to be pretty weak back in the 2000 time frame

The AFC has won 10 Super Bowls since 1982 and all but one of those has been since 1998. They might have been considered weaker than the NFC around 2000 but I don't think most people thought there was a huge gap. The gap now seems to be growing.

yea, I'm surprised that he didn't want the best shot at another ring. You would think with only a few seasons left he would take his best shot at getting one more.

If Tebow brings the Broncos to 8-8, what do you think Manning could do?

I dunno, from what I've read, Harbaugh would not be on board with Manning running the system the way he does.

Denver, on the other hand, seems like they are willing to let Manning do what he does. They have some solid foundation to work with, and can bring in a few FAs and rookies to round out the squad. Their defense is fairly solid, and if Clady stays healthy, they could work out the remaining kinks in the line.

Hell, you bring in Clark, Saturday, maybe even Addai to give Manning some familiarity, and let him go to work.

The Broncos has the 23rd ranked offense by yardage, and the 25th ranked offense by points scored. If Manning is healthy, they could very likely get into top 10/15. If everything else remains consistent, they should improve.

To me, with Manning, the Broncos have as good a chance as anyone. Lets not forget where the 49ers were at one year ago.

Dang! You may not like Tebow or how he has performed but the guy deserved better treatment that this. Oh well, Kansas City will win the division hands down.

lol, what did he he do to deserve anything? you sound way too caught up in the person vs. the player

I read today that it came down to one of those head vs. heart decisions -- Manning's decision came down to San Francisco (head) and Denver (heart), and he decided that even though San Fran gave him the best chance to immediately win, Denver was a much better fit.

I was joking about the Tebow fo Cutler thing, I tried to type that with a straight face but it was hard.

I'm really surprised Manning basically signed a year-to-year deal. I heard some teams (KC,TEN,MIA) were willing to guarantee a lot more $ than that. Supposedly one team was willing to guarantee the whole thing.

Where exactly does this Denver has a good defense come from?
PTS 24.4 (24th)
YDS 357.8 (20th)
PASS YDS 231.5 (18th)
RUSH YDS 126.3 (22nd)
The take away I get from the team is they had(have) a great running game.

Money isn't the driving factor for him.

I'm waiting for the Tebowites to cry foul when Fox and Elway say, "we're going to let Manning be Manning."

Well damn I was hoping he'd become a Titan. Bud Adams lost out on some other good free agents because of this circus too.

Chargers vs bronco's twice a year for the next few years should be good. But my chargers are on the downfall while everyone else in the div is getting better. I like our WR's but we need more than ryan glass mathews at running back.

From the sounds of it, Manning is not trying to handicap a team.

There is verbiage in the contract that allows his release if his neck becomes a problem. So, if this idea flops, and Manning sucks tremendously, but his neck is healthy... they're stuck with him.

It sounds like it is worked out pretty well for Manning and the team. He'll be making 20ish this season, and the same next season (thereabouts). If his neck becomes a bigger issue, he retires, or gets cut and then tries to get healthy again.

My guess is he stays healthy and puts Denver at least in the playoff hunt, if not further.

That comes from the fact that they won games with Tebow. :)

Seriously though, they won games with a bottom of the barrel offense. How else do you do that? Their defense kept them in games, Tebow generally just found a way at the last minute.

You throw Manning into the equation, and you have more time of possession on offense, more points scored, and a generally less winded defense (if Manning is ready to go). It's a pretty safe projection (with a clean bill of health to Manning) that both sides of the ball will statistically show up better. But, all this assumes Manning is healthy and back to form.

They already started. Facebook is flooded with people crying about not giving Tebow a chance. For some reason the vast majority of these people are women, and these women did not watch football until Tebow got there. I'm not sure if they understand that religious fortitude isn't a statistic that's terribly important in the NFL.

well, they somehow managed to win games with an offense that only worked on the last half of the 4th quarter so the defense had to at least bend but not break for all of their games they ended up winning

granted, we could argue that the defense over-achieved knowing how inept their offense was with Tebow, knowing that they simply couldn't give up an insurmountable lead

although the flip-side to that argument is that the defense very well might play better with Manning behind center as they might be able to play with less pressure knowing their offense should be able to consistently move the ball and score points

I have to say I'm very surprised, I was thinking the 49ers would be the most attractive situation for him, that division is awful and the defense is bad-ass, Frank Gore, good O-line, V.Davis/Crabtree/Moss (if anything is left)/Manningham, etc...

Denver has avg to poor RB's, pretty solid WR's - D.Thomas can be a stud, Decker, if healthy, is good - they need another 1 or 2 guys though - Dallas Clark would look nice at TE...O line is ok, defense should be pretty solid again

Tebow to Jacksonville is very likely, Blaine Gabbert looked terrible last season, and that would certainly put people in the stands

As for the San Diego/Denver spat - I wouldn't be too excited about Eddie Royal, losing Tolbert doesn't help, losing Jackson doesn't help, Gates is always a play away from his foot exploding on him..not to mention that Norv Turner is still their coach.
You are high, on crack. The NFC West this year is anything but awful. You want awful? Take a look at the AFC. That's precisely why Manning picked Denver -- the path with least resistance.

Yeah, the AFC has declined in recent years and really hasn't been that good in the last 30 years (relatively speaking). As I stated earlier, the AFC has won only 10 Super Bowls in the last 30 years and 9 of those have been since 1997. After some success in the first decade of this century, the AFC has fallen on hard times and the NFC has won 4 of the last 5 Super Bowls. The Pats, Steelers, and Colts have owned the SB slot for the AFC since the 2003 season.

The NFC West should be good with San Francisco returning and if Arizona can get some consistency on offense, they could be dangerous as well. Seattle is probably a year or so away and who knows with the Rams, but with the trade with Washington, they have a bright future.

Eh, I get a LeBron/Miami feel to this whole thing, where LeBron went to play with his friends because it was the more comfortable thing to do, rather than sign with Chicago which really made the most sense. I expect Peyton to play well and for Denver to compete, but we'll see if they can really join the elite.

Selling Tshirts and jerseys and tickets sure is. Everyone was watching the jackasses this past year to see if Tebow could win. Even here in Cowboys country bars were fool of people cheering for the underdog.

You fuckers up in jackassland are clueless.
