Manning didn't even play that well in the superbowl. The only reason they gave the MVP to him was because he's Payton Manning. The MVP should have gone to Rhodes.

Manning is a great QB. Best ever? probably not... He's lucky though, he has a few more years left in his career to get there.
 
Da bears QB was awful. I never seen such piss poor clutch throwing in a Super Bowl before. They are lucky they were able to put up that many points after that display.

Manning is a good QB. I put him at Farves level except Brett always got injured like a 8-year-old with cerebral palsy on a bike.

Yeah, but he only played in that game. Simms broke his leg. It's not like he got them there.
 
Based on my 28+ years of watching pro & college football, Peyton Manning is without question a fantastic quarterback & IMO a first-round hall-of-famer, however anyone who thinks he's better then Dan Marino because the Colts beat "da Bears" in the SB tonight is an extremely poor judge of talent and/or never saw Marino play live in his prime.

In addition, although I don't like to compare teams from different time periods (especially pre-salery-cap which isn't really fair) either of the teams that the Marino era Dolphins lost to in the Superbowl (1984 Montana/Rice 49er's & 1982 Theismann/Riggens 'Skins) would have made a mockery out of either of tonights competetitors & I also believe the Miami teams from those years would have won easily.

The reasons the Colts won tonight were mainly because (1) Indy's offensive line enabled them to run almost at will, which in turn allowed Peyton to pick apart Chicago's secondary. (2) Chicago's running game had about the least effective 112+ yards I think I've ever seen in a football game & (3) Last but by no means least, Grossman is the worst QB I've EVER seen in a high-level playoff game, even allowing for the fact that he's inexperienced... give back the points his pathetic turnovers lead to directly & you have 2-point game which could have gone either way.

Regardless, I did end up feeling a bit sorry for Chicago tonight as I watched their defense get worn gradually down because Grossman couldn't maintain long enough drives to let them catch their breath (never mind score points like an offense is supposed to) ... for the sake of all you loyal Bear fans I hope they have the sense to send him packing in the off season... if I were a Bear fan i'd sure love to see how Jeff Garcia would look dressed in brown.


Edit: Btw IMO the best QB I've personally seen play was Joe Montana ... it wasn't just his receivers, he could have done the same with anyone even half decent... he just had a certain almost magical touch with his passes that used to leave me beating my head against the wall in frustration as a Giants fan.... like Michael jordan he just brought out somthing special in the players around him that I've never seen anyone else capable of.


 
Elway was the best, IMO. The guy had the complete package.

Strong Arm? Check.
Accurate Arm? Check.
Scrambling ability? Check.
Size? Check.
Confidence? Check.
Comeback drive ability? Check.
Super Bowl win? Double-check.

You could certainly make a strong argument with me for Elway as the second-best (again that I've personallly seen play) however I think if I had to choose a team I'd have to go with Roger Staubach second & then Elway as my third choice .... both of these guys had a touch of the same "follow me to greatness" magic that Montana had, just in smaller doses & with less talented supporting casts.

Another VERY underestimated QB who is much better then MANY others with SB rings though is Jim Kelly ... not as good as Joe Montana or the two mentioned above, but still an incredible talent.

Yes but without Payton during the season, the Colts wouldnt have gotten into the post season. The defense didnt get it together until the post season. Payton carries them all year long.

Well, in Marino's 17 year career, he had 1 1000 yd rusher playing with him.
It was Karim Abdul-Jabbar with a paltry 1100 yds and a 3.6 yd per carry.
And this was late in his career too.

While I do think Manning is great, he flopped with a great running every year until this year.

which is an interesting way of making a point, Manning for the first time doesn't have a serious running game (altho addai improved and rhodes was rhodes). and guess what, he won the superbowl.

Sure they did.
Between Addai and Rhodes, tbey rushed for over 1700 yds.
In fact, their rushing offense had 1762 yds this season and in 2005 they rushed for 1703 yds.
If they just give the ball exclusively to Addai, he would have gotten Edge type numbers.
In fact he had a better yd/ per carry(4.8) than Edge ever did.

 
Marino would have had a couple of rings if Miami had actually had a defense during his prime playing years.
 
No love for Steve Young? I grew up watching and loving the 49ers and it was incredible to see another QB step in after Montana and be able to throw the same throws AND run the ball.

I would say at this point in their careers with Indy winning the Superbowl, Manning is a better QB. Now Marino played an additional 8 years and still had some very productive years after that. For Payton to be the better QB in history he will have to keep doing this for a few more years.

Peyton calls a significant amount of plays from the line. In the huddle the offensive coordinator (Moore) gives him 3+ plays to give out to the offense, and then he chooses based on the defense he sees. From what little I can recall of Marino's career, he was not nearly as much of a field general as Manning is.
Also, keeping an offense on the field for that much time and consistently engineering drives of 10+ plays like that is a matter of skill. If you don't believe me, just ask Rex Grossman.
