First off, you shouldn't punch people. But at the same time, if you don't act like a complete idiot, these situations are easy to avoid. If I walk into a biker bar and announce that everyone in leather is a "lovely human," the patrons inside will be in the wrong for beating the shit out of me. But that doesn't absolve me of my responsibility in escalating a situation that never would have gotten to violence in the first place. Personal responsibility is a two-way street. Just because you have the right to do something doesn't make it a good idea (not to mention technically you don't have the right to be drunk in public, so the guy screaming racial slurs is in the wrong from the get-go).
