RIP to all those lost in this tragic accident. 🙁

My ex-wife and her companion were flying to Japan and then the US from Singapore yesterday-today after having spent the last few weeks in Malaysia (visiting her family) & Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Good thing I have her itinerary so I could check that she's flying Delta, otherwise I'd be worried sick.

No. The wing tip broke off, which is nothing serious.

If the tip broke off in flight it wouldn't be serious.

It would take a hell of a crash to break the wing off...

The plane would be a total loss.

It's quite surprising for a 777 to crash.

There has only been one other 777 crash with fatalities, and that was those Asiana idiots.

There have been only three in flight hull losses, and two of those were on landing, and 4 hull losses total.

It seems amazing to me that they don't know exactly where it is. Don't these planes have hardened transponders? I am not an expert. How deep is the water there? Doesn't look like a large area: when a plane crashes in the water isn't there plenty of debris floating around? Luggage, seat pads, people, wings, etc.
 
They do have transponders for the flight/data recorderes that will work for up to 48 hours (I think) and the range is limited.

It's obvious by now that the plane has crashed. Very unlikely that there are survivors.

Very sad and scary. 🙁

I've always been nervous about flying, and was even thinking about taking a trip this summer - but after reading stuff like this, I doubt that will be happening. :\
 
I am on a plane over the Pacific right now. And I have flown in and out of Malaysia a ton of times. Does not really worry me any more than normal.

I hope they find the plane soon and that there are survivors, but no distress call makes it highly unlikely.

They found oil slick now where it went in.

Complete break up from 35,000 feet won't leave much except for large parts such as engine assemblies.
 
there are reports from foreign sources that the Italian and possibily the Austrian person mentioned in the manifest reported their passports missing and were not on the plane. This raises the prospect of something deliberate.
 
Wasn't there a terror attack in China last week where 29 people were slashed to death by Chinese Muslims? Isn't Malaysia a Muslim country? Isn't there an insurgency going on in southern Thailand involving Muslims? Would this be the same area? No? Then it's probably mechanical/pilot error.

It's really hard to comprehend the idea that we could lose track of a commercial plane in this day and age for such a length of time when I could go on google and trace where I've been for the last few months minute by minute.

I can certainly understand losing contact with it but I would think the authorities would be able to pinpoint the exact GPS location of the plane where it went down based on the time when contact was lost?

It's not that. I'm sure there are many people that already know. It just has to be confirmed and reconfirmed all the way up to the relevant powers that be so that everything is correct and final and there is no error. These are governments we're talking about and they have the final say in everything.
