Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

It was expected to land in Beijing at 06:30 (22:30 GMT).

"Malaysia Airlines is currently working with the authorities who have activated their search and rescue team to locate the aircraft," the carrier said.

The Boeing B777-200 aircraft was carrying 227 passengers, including two children, and 12 crew members.

It went missing two hours after taking off from Kuala Lumpur.

It was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, China's Xinhua state news agency said.

The aircraft did not enter airspace controlled by China and did not make contact with Chinese controllers, the agency added.

Malaysia Airlines has told the BBC it will be holding a press conference later on Saturday.

The airline is the national carrier of Malaysia and one of Asia's largest, flying nearly 37,000 passengers daily to some 80 destinations worldwide.

So they lost it 7 hours ago but we only found out about it within about the past hour. That's pretty crazy

I watch "Air Crash Investigations" for too often to be able to think positively about this :(.

Well, where'd they lose it? A 777 ain't a set of fucking car keys, is it? And it ain't as if it's incon-fucking-spicuous now, is it?

Sorry, I had to... the thread topic made it irresistible. :p

"somewhere" over vietnamese airspace.

hoping for the best, but really thinking/expecting the worse. RIP :(

i hate flying. i'm a believer in statistics but damn there's just something about a metal tube with two guys who i can't see, flying it. flying to cancun next month.

taking a go-pro ever since i saw that guy on youtube go down in a small passenger plane, go pro and all, swam out alive.

If it had landed safely anywhere we'd know about it. Satellites can't even see it anymore. My guess is it's in the ocean.

I've seen many a "Air Crash Investigation". The plane just disappeared off radar at 35,000 feet and the pilots couldn't even get off a single mayday call. It probably came apart in the air or started spiraling out of control suddenly.

I remember flying from South Korea to Thailand during Super Typhoon Haiyan. By the time we were in the air it was over Vietnam and was that scary. They flew around it but you could feel the plane violently shake. I was scared. A Korean couple sitting next to me looked at me like I was a puss. I had my face buried in my pillow :(

Sad news tonight.

You have to wonder that its the same day they found cracks in the wings at the Boeing plants.
