Major snow storm dc-nyc this weekend (1/23/16)

pfffft. That's nothing like what happened when a monstrous inch of snow brought my home town to its knees:

(important note about this and the VA issue last night: these areas can deal with 1 inch of snow fine; it's just that it happened suddenly, when no one was prepared, and at the worst possible time of day). Still, I got a kick out of watching the cars slip down the hill in front of the house, all the while Yakkity Sax running in my head.

Then there was this somewhat infamous photo from the same region, during last year's Snowmagedalypse:

That was hilarious. Even more hilarious than that time Toronto called the army over like a foot of snow.

That is literally a non issue here. Brush the car off, and head to work.

No, it's not BS. It's pretty much guaranteed that some people are getting more than 2 feet of snow and lots and lots of people are getting more than a foot. No possible way it misses or fizzles. The only question still remaining is where the bullseye lands. Doesn't look like DC gets spared no matter what, they're going to be nailed even if it tracks a little north or a little south. NYC and Philadelphia are still uncertain, the storm tracking 50 miles in either direction can change things a lot. And it means a lot to me too. If this thing swings north I could get a foot and if the high pressure keeps nudging it south it could be 2-4", so I'm watching this carefully
I guess we'll see. Hopefully the NY region gets spared. The media is already saying go buy a week's worth of food. If the power stays on I don't care if we get 4 feet. I'll just crank up the heat and catchup on some movies.

just 24 hours ago MidWestern Ontario was hit by snow squalls dropping over 60 cm of snow.

NoVA gets 1" and everyone panics?

I find that strange probably because we are just so used to it here.

still, Dec 7 - 9 2010 we received 100+ cm of snow and I never want to see that again.

Haha wow 100cm, I don't think I've ever seen that even here in one shot. Back when I was a kid it was typical to have at least that much on the ground accumulated throughout the year though. We don't get as much snow as we used to.

We got maybe one snow fall this year, it was maybe like 30cm at most. Still sucked because I worked at 7am that morning and had to get up even earlier to make sure I make it on time. But it's more an inconvenience than a show stopper.

Central/Eastern Kentucky is supposed to get 10" inches and people are going apeshit. UK cancelled classes. I couldn't find a single egg at the largest Kroger in town. Bread was gone. Ground burger was gone. Most of the milk section was gone.

You'd think we were hunkering down for the apocalypse. School has been canceled for the last two days for 2" of snow. Yes. 2" of snow. This place is fucking retarded when it comes to snowfall.

The grocery stores looked like people preparing for a zombie invasion. Not sure how many days people think it'll take to be able to leave the house but they have enough food for a week or two.

lol I wonder if people are buying lot of water bottles again. That always jarrs me out.

"lots of frozen water is going to fall from the sky, better stock up on water!" 😀

Not that snow would even cause the municipal water system to randomly stop working. Though if it gets cold enough (like -40's for months straight) pipes do sometimes freeze. It happened in my city years back and lot of people had no water and had to get snow from their yard and boil it for water. City was retardedly slow at handling the situation too. I think they were hoping the pipes would magically unfreeze on their own. Takes a lot of electricity to unfreeze them.

Around each new moon and full moon, the sun, Earth, and moon arrange themselves more or less along a line in space. Then the pull on the tides increases, because the gravity of the sun reinforces the moon’s gravity. In fact, the height of the average solar tide is about 50% the average lunar tide. Thus, at new moon or full moon, the tide’s range is at its maximum. This is the spring tide: the highest (and lowest) tide. Spring tides are not named for the season. This is spring in the sense of jump, burst forth, rise. So spring tides bring the most extreme high and low tides every month, and they happen around full and new moon.

I stand corrected.

Wow.That's sad.

we made national news with that storm.

wikipedia still shows the radar image of that storm:

and of course my pics from back then:

America is getting dumber and dumber every fucking year. Cause a run on the markets because some corporate weather forecaster tells you some form of precipitation is going to fall from the sky with a 1 and 10 chance of being actually correct.

Very efficient way for big corporations to clear their inventory. A mastery in mass stupidity.

No surprise, just look at how easily Americans are duped with oil & gas excuses.

Panic buying over a snow storm jars me out. It's not like a hurricane or something where it's going to level several cities. Your boss still expects you at work on time the following morning, and that includes retail workers. Stores, gas stations, and other commodities will continue to exist and be open. 😀

On that note, if you don't have to be out, then don't go anywhere till the plows passed. I just have a 2WD car, when there's a foot of snow in the streets I just don't bother going anywhere unless I have to work. Not worth the risk of getting stuck.

Storm still has two competing centers so is slowing the organization. Now even a third center forming over Alexandria Louisiana. This takes the storm on a much further track than originally forecasted. Looking more like a strong trough than a mega-storm at this point.

estimates have gone up now... around 20-30inches (vs 18-24)

storm is also starting earlier, around 1-2PM in northern va
