People in NOVA are such horrid drivers they dont even try to be a LITTLE safe when theres snow on the road.

THATS why we have accidents. Stupidity. Nothing else.
And I got a nice snow blower in the wings, along with plenty of food and water at the house, so I'm not worried. Just gonna stay home.

The drivers' test is a joke in Virgina.

Also Maryland and Virginia eliminating the parallel parking from their test:

What cracks me up about this storm is that all the "meteorologists" on TV are warning that because of the full moon there will be greater coastal flooding. What does the moon being full have anything to do with it having more of a gravitational pull? 🙄

Edit: My mistake. They even make handy graphics for dolts like me:

spring_tide.gif

So I guess it's true about new moons as well.

Around each new moon and full moon, the sun, Earth, and moon arrange themselves more or less along a line in space. Then the pull on the tides increases, because the gravity of the sun reinforces the moon’s gravity. In fact, the height of the average solar tide is about 50% the average lunar tide. Thus, at new moon or full moon, the tide’s range is at its maximum. This is the spring tide: the highest (and lowest) tide. Spring tides are not named for the season. This is spring in the sense of jump, burst forth, rise. So spring tides bring the most extreme high and low tides every month, and they happen around full and new moon.

pfffft. That's nothing like what happened when a monstrous inch of snow brought my home town to its knees:

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/weather/stormcenter/2005-01-21-raleigh-snow_x.htm

(important note about this and the VA issue last night: these areas can deal with 1 inch of snow fine; it's just that it happened suddenly, when no one was prepared, and at the worst possible time of day). Still, I got a kick out of watching the cars slip down the hill in front of the house, all the while Yakkity Sax running in my head.

OMG I remember that:
1.Was at work (RTP), decided to leave early (around 1'ish I think)
2.backed out of parking space, tire skidded on ice then went across a large drainage grate in the parking lot....BAM....tire goes flat
3. Get donut spare on, proceed to find out ITS FLAT TOO!
4. more or less idle about a mile down to the nearest gas station on flat donut tire
5. beg cashier for 50cents b/c I have no cash on me
6. tire wont inflate because bead not making good enough seal (even with car jacked up)
7. call coworker - who sends another coworker to pick me up and take me to Tire King down the road a piece. Take flat primary tire and donut tire with us
8. 2hrs later - get to Tire King and get tire replaced/donut inflated
9. Another 2 hours to get back to my car.
10. Drive home.

Grand total of 10 hours

UGGGGGGGGGHHHHH

The drivers test is a joke everywhere. It's too easy to get a license and way too hard to lose one. People should have to demonstrate car control to pass. Being able able to handle slippery conditions and self-correct a minor slide is part of driving, it should be part of the test. Raise the price of the testing and make it more comprehensive so that only competent drivers get on the road. And yank licenses for texting while driving.

Then there was this somewhat infamous photo from the same region, during last year's Snowmagedalypse:

Wait... What?! Forecaster called for a dusting, and they got 1" of snow - then he claimed he was wrong? Isn't 1" considered a dusting? Hell, around here, a 5 mile drive could make a 1 foot difference in snow accumulation. Worried about being off by 1"? Pffft.

Just be happy you guys aren't getting any of that southern ice. I hear it is far more dangerous than anything us north folk get.

I hate to tell you but there's a good chance there will be Southern ice tonight or this weekend. My area is calling for 1-3" of wet snow tomorrow night, which could very well lead to the dreaded Southern ice. The kids got out of school early yesterday which is a good thing, we had at least 1/10" of the deadly white stuff on the grass (nothing on the roads of course).

How is southern ice different from northern ice or western ice or eastern ice? Is it icier or does it just have lower test scores?

yea we get that same ice shit in the fall and spring and yes it is just as bad as the stuff in the south

more clarity from weather.gov for dc area:
fri nite 10 to 16 inches
sat 10 to 14 inches possible.

so 20" - 40" total 😱

I think it originally said 8-12" for us, but now it says 4-8" by Sunday. And then it warms up, rains and washes all this shit away by Tuesday.

No no no, southern ice is slicker. We up north have no idea about actually slick ice or dangerous driving conditionsD:😀 Just ask anyone from the south:thumbsup:

Was it last year that they had like an inch of snow and people were trapped on the road for over a day?

Is this another bs scare? I'm sick of the media creating a panic.

No, it's not BS. It's pretty much guaranteed that some people are getting more than 2 feet of snow and lots and lots of people are getting more than a foot. No possible way it misses or fizzles. The only question still remaining is where the bullseye lands. Doesn't look like DC gets spared no matter what, they're going to be nailed even if it tracks a little north or a little south. NYC and Philadelphia are still uncertain, the storm tracking 50 miles in either direction can change things a lot. And it means a lot to me too. If this thing swings north I could get a foot and if the high pressure keeps nudging it south it could be 2-4", so I'm watching this carefully
