I dont get these comments, are you entertained that we don't normally get snow at all and are thus unprepared?

I mean, sure it'd be funny if we were acting like this in upstate new york, or in canada. But Washington DC area rarely ever gets more than an inch or two at a time. They have no where near the equipment needed to deal with a storm of this size. It doesn't matter if it's 10" or 30" anything over 5-6" will shut down the city for at least a day or two, and in this case it will likely be much longer than that.

Not sure where you're at, but we don't have a magic button up here that miraculously clears the snow on all of the roads instantly. 5"-6" won't shut down anything here - even if every plow were to have suddenly broken down moments before the storm struck. People would be bitching about how bad the roads are, but they'd carry on with their lives; "gee, the roads are a little slippery - I should drive a little slower & leave a little more space between me and the next vehicle." Not that 100% of our drivers are competent; but most aren't terrified of snow, nor do most turn into complete morons after 1" of snow. Heck, I've watched my wife drive off to work long before the plows have come through - her bumper pushing the snow all the way down the road.

To DC atot, What do secret service or capitol police do during snow storm? Do they still have to stand out there and guard the building?

That makes me wonder if the guards at the tomb of the unknown soldier stay out there. I know they stay out when it's raining. I know they also stay out in normal snow storms, but I wonder specifically about this one.

This'll be interesting. I'm on the edge of the main swath and the current projection is 15-20" of snow, I'm thinking 18" will be the local number. It gets harder to find places to put it all at around the 12" mark. At least work was cancelled though I seriously doubt we'd still be working by the time this starts.

We'll see if PPL got their money's worth from the $1bil they crushed on grid upgrades since Sandy.

During the last blizzard about 6 years ago we got around 20 inches of snow. At the time I was shoveling snow at the red cross headquarters in DC, which is right down the street from the white house, they had cops and SS still around during the whole thing. You could see the guys on the rooftop of the white house and they didn't look like they were going anywhere.

Assuming 8 hours shift that would really suck or if the super is nice they make them rotate every 4hours.. Its best to move around a lot and not stationary. I saw that red cross building my last business trip.

Getting gas yesterday was pure mayhem. Grocery store wasn't bad except for the empty shelves of water. I'll be quite happy if we don't lose power.

Surprisingly calm here in coastal Connecticut. Grocery stores are not getting hammered and no lines at gas stations. I was in a store less than an hour ago, shelves loaded with bread, milk, eggs, water, etc.

Yes i'm sure all the porches and mercedes in DC will get right out of your way so you can just keep on trucking like nothings wrong. 🙄

also, do you understand what population density is? It's a fuck of a lot easier to drive around when there aren't that many people out to get in your way, when there are over 1 million people all within a 10-20 mile area, it gets a bit more difficult to keep things clear and moving.

That's all well and good, but what about 30" or more? That would at least be a minor disruption I would imagine. The hype train absolutely gets out of control for these mid-atlantic storms and the run on bread at the stores makes for some funny pictures, but we're talking about more than half the state of Virginia getting 20" of snow with some areas getting 30"+. This is a top 3 historical snow event, so it's a pretty big deal.

Just look at the webcam for WAMO and shows dark clouds. Ground is all white. This morning at 8am. it was patchy snow. Man, I was just there last week and weekend for work again.

There's not really much to prepare for though, I mean, sure need to get up earlier to clear the snow off the car in the morning and possibly shovel enough snow in the driveway to get the car out, but other than that it's more an inconvenience than emergency. Here, work places still expect you to be there on time. If you really can't get the car out, take a cab. The snow plows eventually pass, but that can be weeks later. Our city has been pretty terrible for snow plowing in the past years. The side roads can get a little harder to drive through and people do get stuck every now and then but the main ones get fairly well packed/plowed just from traffic alone.

Been a while since we've had a really good storm though. The really big ones actually do sometimes cancel school, but I think it's more a liability/precaution thing than anything. Some storms they cancel, some they don't. If they cancelled too much already throughout the year, then they stop cancelling.

6" on the ground at my place so far.

shovel it now then shovel more tomorrow morning?
then shovel again tomorrow nite?

or just wait till sun and shovel all at once?

I'm of the all at once school, unless you have kids and can make a fun outing of it.

I used to shovel snow a little layer at a time, less strain on the back.
But this time around we're gonna wait until we need to go somewhere, then do the absolute minimum just to get the car out.

They cancelled the Caps game. WTF I need my Caps hockey. Just send the tv crews, players, and coaches there... we don't care about the fans' travel troubles.

I usually like to do it right before bed, and clear the car too, that way there's a bit less to do the next morning and I can get out quicker. But if I don't work the next day then I usually just wait and do it all at once.

Now that I have a snow blower it goes so much better though. I used to do it all by hand before so I'd do it in layers so it's less work. Sometimes I'd say FTS and call someone with a plow.
