Magic the Gathering

I recently started playing the card game that started them all, magic the gathering. It has been a lot of fun, I got started playing my campers when I was a counselor this summer, and enjoyed totally handing the lil' bastids their butts on a regular occassion (usually with their own cards.) Now I have like 1200 cards myself and have been playing around.

I have come to realize some things.

1) this is a very expensive game to play.

2) if you played 10 years ago, you have a rediculous advantage over those who started recently.

3) if you are playing somebody more experience than you, you will lose regardless because they will know rules you didn't that conveniently come into effect greatly to their advantage.

4) if you beat somebody continually, they will go to a card shop, spend some money, and purchase cards that will beat your deck.

5) getting beat will prompt you to go to the store and buy more cards.

All in all, I'm getting pretty frustrated. It seems like unless I'm willing to spend more money on cards, I'm going to continually get beat by the people I play around the school and stuff. I unloaded about 200 on it so far over the past few months, which doesn't bother me much because I've had a good time playing it with my room mates and pals, and they don't go anywhere, so I'll be able to play for the next 20 years without spending a dime, if I can stand losing most of the time.

Any of you guys play magic, or used to play magic that came to this conclusion?

Also, since I got my butt handed to me by my friend going to the store and buying some tournament banned cards and tearing me up with them, I must ask: anybody have any old cards from when they were a kid they wanna sell?

P.S - if you don't play magic, don't start playing, its like crack only less fun and more expensive.

Heh I played some back in elementary school (8-9 years ago). I agree with 1, 2, and sometimes 4/5. 3 is kind of dumb since thats just saying if someone has more experience, they'll win (which is how it should be). I played/collected revised mainly. Then I got in on the MTG: Online beta. That kicked ass :p You could buy unlimited decks during the beta so I had at least 1 of every card

Well most of the older cards are not allowed anymore, so it doesnt really matter howlong youve been playing...

That really depends on a number of factors. ;)

My brothers and i would play with everything we have. I've got the better cards for the most part, but I lost a lot of games.

Oh, and trading is where it's at. I've gotten better stuff through trades than through dollars.

A lot of the alpha/beta/unlimited cards (timewalk, timetwister, chaos orb, stuff like that) are pretty powerful cards. I imagine if you played mixed Type I/II you could get some really cheap combos out

Number 3 was thrown in out of spite for the guy who was a total dick to me about it. He wouldn't bring up a rule until it hurt him - aka- he tapped 3 of my land with an instant when I was trying to cast something, which I figured prevented me from having the mana to cast it.

We switched decks, I did the same to him, and he said, well - I'll use your tapping them to gain 3 mana and cast it anyway. Jerk.

Great game, but balance was never considered. Thus they make cards, everyone buys them, they get banned, and the process repeats. So I agree 100% with your conclusions. Instead I paid $10 for the computer game, and I'm perfectly happy playing that.

That's why they're restricted. And yeah, there are/were some sick combos out there (channel/fireball being one of the favorite first turn kills).

I was always a big fan of the old fashioned stasis decks. Nothing like making your oponent quit in frustration. :D

I want to go to the pre-release on sunday in orlando, but I have a 4 hour karate club thing to do instead. I'm sad that I will miss hte meeting, but I do like having the knowledge that I could totally whoop any of the people at that pre-release in real life.

Someone selling Magic cards in FS/T.

I have almost a full set of Revised cards, with lots of extras. I also have a sealed Revised booster box I plan to sell on eBay eventually.

Some of the newer decks are just lame. There's the blue/black discard style deck. All it does it it sets up a whole chain of cards to make you keep on discarding like made and then take like 50 billion damage whenever you discard. They usually never get anything out to attack and end up just sitting there. One of the funner decks is mass token attack. Get squirrel tokens from various cards, multiply them with natural selection (doubles all tokens) and pump them with coat of arms (+x/+x for each creature of x applies to each creature).

Discard is fun though. Suicide black is one of my favorite decks of all time (kinda different than the stasis deck :p).

My brother liked token decks. I kept a wrath of god handy.

i played 11 years ago, when I was 12, do you think any of those cards would be worth anything now?

$5-$10. I'll buy them for $12, shipped. :p

Maybe, depends on what you have and the condition.

I like the newer cards- I think that some of the newer cards can make really good decks. I just think that the only really great decks are gonna have mostly old cards with some of the bettter new ones.

My brother has 98% of revised (missing like 4-6 cards i think, not the expensive ones though like shivan dragon, vesuvian doppleganger, nightmare, or fork) in mint condition lying around the house somewhere.

What you do is find the most outlandish combo you can and put a deck together around it. If everyone does that, it gets interesting.

Also, big multiplayer games can be fun.

I started playing during revised. Have about 10,000 cards give or take. I'd sell them, but no one offers even remotely good prices anymore.

Favortie deck was a colorless control deck I made around jester's masks and millstones. Loved the game up through about alliance or so, then I thought the rules got too overdone and the game lost it's fun for me.

I used to back in 95 (8th-9th grade). It also got popular again my senior year (1999). I still have a few decks lying around, with a decent amount of cards lying around. I still play against a couple of my friends once in a blue moon. I got a bunch of old school cards.

1 Blue deck named "The Blue Bomber"
1 Blue/White deck named "The Blizzard of Oz"
1 Red/Black deck named "Gumbo Ya-Ya"

Kev- yes, those cards are probably worth about 1.5x what you paid for them, overall. IF you find the right buyer. And of course that is assuming you bought booster packs. That is just a ballpark, but 11 years ago would be like antiquities and legends sets.. those booster packs are selling for like 25 bucks for an unopened pack now.

How many cards do you have?

Also- thanks for the link to the guy selling cards on the other forum, my buddy happened to be over and we figured we'd put in an offer on em' and split the cost. We are willing to buy cards in bulk since its cheaper and we can make decks for our friends and get them to play.

Through out my playing days, I've had all of revised. Shivans were quick trades, dopplegangers were nice, nightmares were eh, and forks just got horded. Royal assassins were fun too.

There was always 1 shivan per box, and IIRC it was the second pack from the top on the left hand side.

I still want a set of power 9.
