so when you play against someone, and you win, do you get to keep their cards as the prize?

Is this like yugi-oh where you have "life points" and you if you lose your points you lose the game?

never really understood why ppl play these games.

give me tx hold 'em thank you very much.

1) this is a very expensive game to play.
Agreed

2) if you played 10 years ago, you have a rediculous advantage over those who started recently.
Not really... most of the good cards in the past are now banned so there's no channel/fireball combos anymore. Modern tourneys restrict you to use the more recent series so you can't bring out your Moxes.

3) if you are playing somebody more experience than you, you will lose regardless because they will know rules you didn't that conveniently come into effect greatly to their advantage.
If you know the basic stacking rules and the turn order rules, then you should be fine. The rules have changed throughout the year. Ex. The term 'buried' is extinct.

4) if you beat somebody continually, they will go to a card shop, spend some money, and purchase cards that will beat your deck.
Yup

5) getting beat will prompt you to go to the store and buy more cards.
Yup

Same, but I went to the new set prerelease today, and played for the first time in like 2 years. The most surprising thing about it? I still remembered how to play, and I still remembered how to play well.

I thought Champions of Kamigawa, or whatever it is called, was not out until October 1st. Did they change the release date?

MTG is a fundamentally flawed game. The problem with MTG is a problem that plagues a LOT of card games: balance. There are cards and combinations with those cards (that JUST SO happen to often be rares) that work so well together that they quickly dominate tournament scenes. At the higher levels of MTG there are only a handful of decks that have any chance of winning. Of course there are *slight* variations on those decks, but the fact remains, competitive MTG gets boring and very expensive I might add.

Edit: a good competitive deck can cost from $150 - $200. One notable exception was the Wild Mongrel decks, which used a lot of commons and uncommons.

Funny I just found this thread...

My buddies have been playing for years, and I always never thought anything of it. A couple weeks ago they were talking about it and like "Tap this, sac that, blah blah" and I was like WTF are you guys talking about...so I sat in on a few games, got a little Stompy green deck built for me, and have been playing around with it since. It's definitely fun, but MAN can this get expensive...It's like there's only so much you can do with the new stuff, and if you don't know what you want to do then how the fsck are you supposed to know what sets to look to buy cards/boxes from to build a new deck?

Seriously though it's definitely awesome, but I can see myself just unloading all kinds of money into it 😱

On that note...anyone have a collection that they'd be looking to sell off for a reasonable price? Like something you have but just don't play anymore? (I saw the FST thread but just didn't have the cash @ the time.) It's not bad to lose because you get to learn constantly, but it gets annoying after awhile when you just keep getting smacked around~

I wish I had my card collection but I left it all back home with my parents. I have a friend who started much later than I did, but she had more money than me too. My black-blue counter/land tap deck eventually fell to her black hand destruction deck and her red land destruction deck. ARGH....

Land Destruction is just annoying 😀

Also played a Discard deck today...kid got This Card out on his second or third turn while everybody else had 5 or more cards in their hand...

Talk about annoying having to trash 5-6 cards every turn (When you're not getting any land like I wasn't)

Fun stuff though 😀

All the best deck lists are available on the Internet. Read my post above though, they cost a lot of money to build, most of them.

Land destruction is EXTREMELY fun. I think I got the most laughs out of my almost pure land destruction deck on MTG Online. Of course it wasn't a competitive deck, I'm not sure if any land destruction decks are these days. I annoyed the fvck out of a lot of players though.

Yeah, it's fun to play with 3 or 4 people and have everyone's land just get destroyed.

We also have this kid who almost always plays elves, and they just about always end up getting burned or...some black card that wipes em all out. Funny stuff.

Also gotten broke a couple times by a goblin deck...if you get a good draw those decks are so fast 😀

Hahaha... I had a card "Pestilence", tap one black to deal 1 damage to all players and all creatures. I wiped out my friend's green weeny deck... hahaha....

Yeah we take alot of Pestilence damage...usually 3 to all players/creatures when playing with him...also wipes out elves pretty quick 😀

OMG, Bigblades!!! First, you come to my forums and bukaki over what I spend 7% of my free time on.. Then, you pick up this lame-ass game that's been around forever from kids 5 years younger than you that I was (and you should be) too smart to ever start playing.

This is like Smash Brothers.. I'm getting so damn annoyed by it that I'm gonna have no choice but to wtfpwn your ass into submission so that you quit blowing your time and money on it. Oh ya.. I'll eventually get back to pwning your ass with Falco when I figure out the damn keys.

i played like ten years ago with the nerd in spanish class. i had to keep my deck hidden from my friends so they wouldn't make fun of me.

You can find me on mtgo under mgpotter.

I have been building up my playsets of IPA commons online. I started online with the Beta and I'm lucky that I got some of the "power" IPA cards a while ago. Unfortunately, I never bought any Spiritmongers and they're now over $60 each.

I played in the paper prerelease last weekend (in Singapore where I now live) and went 2-2 and had a pretty good time.

Used to play sometime ago, started just around the time 3rd edition ended and around the release of weatherlight, and did have a mean goblin burn deack that was awsome, goblin grenades and all the direct damge cheapys like lightning bolt, chain lightning and some the later expansion ones.

Did like my home made merman deck though 😛

Fish decks were all the rage for a while.

The goblin deck you mentioned still gets some play when I'm increadibly bored 😛

Meh I don't want your 9 anyways 😉

I don't have the 9. I'm still looking for the 9 at a reasonable price. I almost got a hold of them, but I got laid off.

I should give that guy a call again if I ever save up some money, I know I can get mad discounts. 😎
