I play pretty regularly.

You do have an advantage if you know the timing rules well, but you won't win every time because of it.

As for the land tapping - it all depends when it is done. Spells and effects go on the stck. You can react to it by tapping the target lands for mana. This doesn't work for effects like Tanglewire but it does for a tapping effect or spell. Depending on when the lands are being tapped (during the Upkeep steop, for example, means that you're restricted to using the mana for Instants), you may or may not be able to react.

If you don't like the fact that someone can just go buy better cards (there is no deck that wins against everything, btw), play Draft or Sealed deck.

Kev - the game is just over 10 years old. So if you really started playing 11 years ago, you would have Alpha and Beta cards which are the most valuable.

Tapping for mana can beat any instant out there. ;)

But yeah, that whole mana burn thing is a bitch.

How many cards do you have?

Also- thanks for the link to the guy selling cards on the other forum, my buddy happened to be over and we figured we'd put in an offer on em' and split the cost. We are willing to buy cards in bulk since its cheaper and we can make decks for our friends and get them to play.

dammit, that sucks. when I was in 8th grade all the earlier cards were insanely expensive, like the black lotus. I always had a dream that some day those stupid god damn cards I had would eventually be rediculously expensive as well. That dream is dead now.

Oh and I don't really know how many I have. I bet my mom threw them all out though. If not they're hidden somewhere in my parents house.

Hmm I still love playing its just 1) its hard to find ppl to play with and 2) you can solve 1) with MTG: online but that's expensive since you gotta buy decks online bleh. You can solve 2) by just sticking with my current cards but then you run into 1) again :p

$5-$10. I'll buy them for $12, shipped. :p

Maybe, depends on what you have and the condition.

My brother has 98% of revised (missing like 4-6 cards i think, not the expensive ones though like shivan dragon, vesuvian doppleganger, nightmare, or fork) in mint condition lying around the house somewhere.

Through out my playing days, I've had all of revised. Shivans were quick trades, dopplegangers were nice, nightmares were eh, and forks just got horded. Royal assassins were fun too.

There was always 1 shivan per box, and IIRC it was the second pack from the top on the left hand side.

I still want a set of power 9.

I have a Shivan Dragon, tons of Forks, some Vesuvan Dopplegangers, etc. I'm only a couple of cards short of a full Revised set. I need one or two double lands, but I have doubles of some of mine I can trade when I dig them out. I also need a Royal Assassin. I have one that someone sent to me, but I need to check if it is Revised though.

I bought a couple of boxes of Eighth Edition on a whim. Sooo tempting to open that sealed Revised booster box downstairs, but it's worth more as it is.

Look for comic book shops. If they don't offer tournies and whatnot locally, they generally know where people play.

I love playing the game, don't get me wrong. I'm just not a good loser. Especially because if I go to somewhere like the magic the gathering club at UF, its the one place those people really shine. I'm invading their ZOC by thinking I have a chance. So naturally they are arrogant jerks about it.

I pick up dual lands whenever I see them, even if I have 4. They sometimes have them at the comic shop I go to, so if you want me to check for anything... ;)

Just have fun. :)

I've been to a number of tournaments, and only won one of them. Had fun the rest of the time.

The one I won was against a couple of pro players though, so I felt even better. The arrogant pricks looked through my deck after getting their asses handed to them and could only say "it's alright." :D

Kev - Black Lotus and the different Moxes are still worth a lot of money. Depending on the condition, they are worth between '00's and around a $1,000 for the Lotus.

No thanks. I need to dig out my Revised sets. I started one down in Seattle, then started another when I moved back to Alaska. Between the two I know I have nearly everything except the one or two double lands and the Royal Assassin. I just need to dig both sets out, combine them, and see what exactly I need. I've found a good site online for buying single cards, so if I wind up needing any I will probably just buy from them.

My brother and I played back in high school. It is so damn expensive. We still have our cards, but don't play anymore. They release so many new editions that is just gets boring. We had a few Shivan Dragons and such, but the price continually went down so we sold most of them.

No, some other site a friend introduced me to. They also sell sealed boxes of new sets at a slight discount when they are released.

EDIT: Make that a slight discount against bigger discounts. Locally I can get a sealed booster box of Eighth for $89.99. Upon release, the site he introduced me to had them for $75.00 if I recall correctly.

I used to get the same from starcity games. Probably spent a couple of grand there last year. :p

A friend of mine owns a comic/game shop in the area. I managed to get some really nice deals there. And of course my usual comic shop hooks me up.

I got into it, because I was into D&D. It was around the "Revised edition" (or 3rd edition).

Maybe last year or two , I sold all my high dollar cards. I actually had 2 black lotus and 3 moxes that I purchased when they were at $50 and $20. I got my money back plus a bit.

You will have to wait for the next set or edition release for the pre-order discounts. :p

I'm not too worried, they're out of all the big cards I'd be interested in.

But another friend is writing a business plan for a comic shop (yeah, I have a lot of geeky friends :p), and maybe I can convince him he needs to buy some stuff at cost for me.

used to play a bit right around iceage/homelands

had some revised cards and cards from alpha/beta

but it got rediculously expensive, and i wasn't paying for any of it hah.

they just started releasing expansions so fast with cards that could just handle previous generations decks :/

Ah Magic, the memories. :) I started playing back when The Dark and Revised were out and stopped around the time Stronghold was released. I've still got all my cards, around 5K of them. Got a few Revised dual lands, Nightmare, Fork.. I forget the rest. It's been so long!

I won a Mox Jet in a tournament like 6 years ago. Other than that, most of my other cards aren't worth much of anything.

Was actually thinking of playing it again for a bit, since I can afford to spend $50 or whatever it is now on a box of cards and not have to save up money for like 3 weeks.
