I think I'm up to ch.15 now. It's definitely not a short game, even without any extras. I thought the original had more to do. Or am I thinking about the Godfather games?

I did like how Mafia 2 had the tie in to the original Mafia. Back in ch.13 or 14, was it? I played the original Mafia back when it was first released, so it's been quite awhile. But I knew right away when the scene popped up in Mafia 2.

So.... has anyone figured out how to download the soundtrack? I bought the deluxe edition just for the soundtrack but can't find a place to download it from steam, inside the game, properties, etc..

I finished it a day ago.

Probably give it a 8/10

Pros:

Well presented story with interesting characters
Great atmosphere
Excellent graphics and audio
Gun battles are entertaining
No obvious bugs
Decent variety of cars and guns

Cons:

A bit short...took me 11 hours
Lack of a save feature...why are we still using checkpoints?
Game obviously stripped a bit for future dlcs...pisses me off a bit to be honest.
Small map
No melee weapons

Overall.....good. Mafia 1 was the better game though imo

Finally finished it.

Definitely is linear and there are no side missions.

That said, for its genre and considering the storyline really is amazing in my opinion. Gets my vote for game of the year, for its genre of course.

It's a no brainer Starcraft 2 will be goty for 2010. ;)

The story was amazing, enjoyed the gun battles. Yes it was linear, yes I'm not sure if it's worth $50 with basically no replay value. No matter how good a story I usually can't replay a single player story based game.

But for the first time through, fantastic game! One of the year's best.

I agree on all points. The pretty obvious absence of some things seemed like a blatant rip off with them coming out in DLCs. Heck I even noticed some Steam achievments for the game are for DLC that's not (or at least wasn't last I checked) released. This was on launch day. :(

They did a great job on the game, but unfortunately marketing realized that before release and sprung into action.

Still working my way through it. Kind of getting bored, not really THAT into it. For $50, think I shoulda just bought Starcraft 2, although I suck at RTS games.

The middle chapters aren't exactly that exciting, and the shooting becomes routine.

Starcraft 2 is a great single player game too. I haven't even gone online to get my ass kicked by the koreans yet and I've gotten my money out of it already.

Thanks for that info. Cutting edge graphics and a good storyline are nice; but little replay value put this one in my "check prices in six months" cue.

I'm loving the story to this. I'm on Chapter 11 right now. Just kind of leisurely playing through it. I have 0 problem with the linear nature of the game as it is primarily a story driven game. One in which you are obviously a passenger and not a driver (although in game you ALWAYS drive haha). But I don't feel that's a drawback here. Personally I enjoy the fist fighting more then the gun fights which I don't really enjoy if I don't have a Tommy gun haha. I wish they had added more moves then "hard punch" "light punch" and "dodge." Really capitalized on the brutal way in which the Mafia operates. I'm not done yet and I hear it's like Far Cry 2 in that once you are done you can't just run around and keep doing random stuff. I really hope that isn't the case as it almost kills replayability for me. But if it is the game is still solid and I will just have to look forward to DLC's I guess.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I know alot of people were getting that bug that would decrease your brightness of your display when you exited Mafia 2.

To fix it, right click on the Mafia 2 icon/executable, select properties, select the "Compatibility" tab and click to place the check mark next to "Disable desktop composition" and that fixes it.

What is desktop composition?

Desktop composition is also known as Aero. It can either be disabled globally or on a program by program basis. Having it disabled while running such things as 3D games may provide a performance bump. When set to disabled, the program Aero will only temporarily be disabled. After the program ends Aero will be turned on automatically. Keep in mind that you may need to select the main executable. Some games for example use a launcher to start the game which then starts the main program. In this case you do NOT want to change the launcher.

Sorry for the slight hijack but does anyone know where a person can pick up the first original Mafia? Besides ebay? Thinking I should play it before considering Mafia 2. Thanks in advance.

Linky no worky :( Looks like some other links on google are dead too...
Worked fine when I posted it. Someone cracking down methinks.

The file and instructions can be obtained from the bay of pirates, just search for Mafia II Costa's Freeroam Mod.

I bothered to read a review yesterday, and was somewhat intrigued by the single-player possibilities.

Multiplayer is a write off for me though. I have NEVER been good at RTS games online because I'm slow as shit building, and don't like twitching so I can pump out just enough units to do an early base rape. I got my money's worth out of Warcraft 3 though. Mods and co-op play were great.

Gave Mafia 2 some more time, and liking it a bit more now that I'm
out of prison
. Cops are a bit too formulaic though; you can get away everytime just by stopping, waiting till they get out of the car, then hauling ass. GTA style with 4-wanted stars is overkill though.

Steam? I got Mafia for free when I pre-ordered Mafia 2. So it must be in their database.

Just finished it. Took 10:04 hours. It was paced ok, didn't feel like it dragged, didn't feel short, but I don't have marathon sessions anymore.

I got the never ending loading screen glitch at the end of chapter 14 when you have to pay back the loan shark guy with 55K. After googling around I found several other people had the same problem, I read if you don't steal money from any places and just crush cars to make the 55K you are fine........so I did that and it fixed the problem. Kind of weird.

I checked STEAM first. They don't offer it for sale although they do list it. I'm assuming its something they plan to offer at a later date. I added it to my wish list. GoG and D2D don't offer it either. Only place I have seen it so far is ebay.

Yeah - it's heavily story driven - most of it's cut scenes and driving from point A to point B with a smidgen of "boxing" when you need to.

I was really hoping there would've been more GTA style stuff to do - food vendors on the side walk, whore houses for a good time, bars to visit and play pool/darts, random npc's standing on the corner asking you to do something, etc.

You can't go wrong with most RTS / Strategy games.

The new DLC Jimmy's Vendetta allows free ride and 30+ missions. Apparently it's almost as long as the original game. Clearly it was cut from the game to make more money. Man that pisses me off.

As I stated in the Civ5 thread, DLC is just a horrible idea from the consumer side. It started off with good intentions I think, as TRUE ADD-ONS to help keep interest in the game months after its release. But when the DLC is available on release day, it is nothing but stuff they decided they could cut from the main release and make more $$ on.
