i don't understand how a mac 700 MHz machine can be even thought of as faster than a 1700 MHz PC?
why is that?

Hardware wise, they could be close.

The DAMN MAC OS gets in the way, tho, so you can't really test it...

what do u think of OSX?
i just installed it at work, it didn't work the first time, and the second time it refused to let me install any software... i don't know why.

I haven't tried OSX.

I used to work on MAC's here at work, but thankfully they are all gone now. :)

From what I've heard, though, it's still slow and fouled up...

its definitely slow... while trying to install developer tools (just a simple copy) it practically froze up the computer for the entire install, before it finally told me about soem error and died.

I've seen macs do some stuff, like edit sound and video surprisingly quickly. They do that job very well so I can't say they suck. I prefer PC because there's more software for them, they are cheaper for parts because macs are still pretty much only made by apple and you can't really build your own mac.

Macs suck!!!!!!! My old k6-2 500 mechine totally beat the sh!t out of my Friends G3 400! in loading, video performence, everything! all my comps kick my friend's G3 400!! Macs are nothing but toy computers.

hehe, at work for 4 hours each day, I use a G4 for photoshop. They are heavily overrated in terms of performance for photo editing, basic operations such as rotate image actually take less time on my dual celeron 400 than on the G4. Plus it's annoying to no end to not have more than one mouse button and not being able to multitask. Like others have mentioned, when the computer is copying something, it won't really let you do anything else, so if it's copying a file off a zip disk for 5 minutes, you are going to look at the progress bar for 5 minutes.

I swear when I come home to my dually win2k system, it's like I stepped forward 5 years in OS progress. When I walk into the lab to work, it's like going back 5 years in computing ;)

I must say the OS is so crippled that I can't really tell how good the hardware is.

I don't hate macs as much as I used to. I guess that's one advantage of no longer working for an Apple Authorized repair center. ;)

The only good Mac is one running Distributed projects, such as RC5, for Team AnandTech.

Other than that, Macs overheat easily, price/performance ratio is too price high, and the OS is suck, ergo, Macs Suck!

I have an aunt who has a printing business. They use macs, and she says that (especially when they upgrade them) they seem to crash a lot. So out the window (no pun intended) goes the idea about if one company makes all the hardware (and raises the prices way up) and the OS, it will be for a better user experience. Whereas my custom box (where each part is of a different brand) runs Windows 2000 and never crashes (except once a month or so).

i despise the way apples look. even if they somehow manage to match hardware/os of PC sometime in the near future, i would much rather have a PC with a better looking case...

First of all, I am neither a PC fan or a Mac fan. I really think that most of you started off with a PC and that's why you're "pro-PC" and "anti-Mac". It's just like using introducing yourself to Paint Shop Pro as your initial painting program and later refusing to switch over to the industry's standard Adobe Photoshop. Most of you have never really given the Mac a chance. Assuming that %95 percent of Anandtech junkies are hard-core gamers, I can see why.

I use both the PC and the Mac for different reasons and applications and both seem to have their advantages. I use the PC for gaming and word processing. The gaming performance on the PC blows the Mac's gaming performance out of the water. Both hardware and software interfaces are intuitive, not to mention the glorious right-click on the mouse. I use the Mac for graphics applications, especially 3D ones because the rendering time on the PC is just outrageously despicable. Rendering large pictures in Adobe Photoshop on the PC is just terrible. The best filters for Adobe products, especially Photoshop, are made strictly for the Mac.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that one reason that a Mac is able to keep up to speed with the current PCs is because of it's 64-bit software and CPU.

One more thing, technology will never be perfect. Every system will crash eventually.

I found a little bit of info for ya'll:

"The secret of the PowerPC G4?s phenomenal performance is its aptly named Velocity Engine. It?s the heart of a supercomputer miniaturized onto a sliver of silicon. The Velocity Engine can process data in 128-bit chunks, instead of the smaller 32-bit or 64-bit chunks used in traditional processors (it?s the 128-bit vector processing technology used in scientific supercomputers ? except that we?ve added 162 new instructions to speed up computations).

In addition, the PowerPC G4 can perform four (in some cases eight) 32-bit floating-point calculations in a single cycle ? two to four times faster than traditional processors.

The PowerPC G4 with Velocity Engine works with the PowerPC architecture to accelerate the data-intensive processing required by next-generation video, voice and graphics applications. Among the G4 key features is a vector permute function capable of rearranging data in the registers ? a priceless benefit when converting data from one format to another (often necessary with voice, video and graphics apps, which typically need to save data in a number of different formats)."
