Allow me to quote the Apple sales rep that used to come into Circuit City.

"What? A second mouse button? What could you possibly need that for? Look, if you hold down the Apple key while you click, it does the same thing!"

Proof starts with the original title... MAC = Media Access Control Mac = Macintosh
It also stands for Money Access center. Or probably alot of other things. But perhaps he capitalized it not to show an acronym, but rather for emphasis?

oh, mac boys, you love to point out that Mac's support other mice. Of course they do. So why is it so difficult to come with one??

I have a couple main problems with Macs. First and foremost, that damn one-button mouse. Even our die-hard Mac guy at work agrees that was the worst idea ever. Next, the myth that Macs are faster than PC's, and the cost/performance ratio. We did a benchmark of a G4 400Mhz vs. a PIII 700Mhz, both with 128M of RAM. The G4 was running Linux PowerPC and the x86 box was running Redhat. The results are posted below. The module numbers refer to different types of tests. The numbers in the right columns under the MFLOPS heading are what to pay attention to. In 7 of the 8 categories, the PIII beat the G4. In the other category, the difference was only about 5%. Keep in the mind the PIII cost about half what the G4 did.

Oh... my... lord... you DID NOT just say that...

Heisenberg, nothing personal, but you obviously biased against the Mac. Biased people mean the "tests" they do will have biased results. Again, nothing personal, but consider your results invalidated.

I must say that Macs are easily visually appearing, but in MY EXPERIENCES and THOSE OF MY FELLOW COLLEGE-STUDENT friends, they have not performed adaquately.

Using various commerical Engineering programs, the Macs were very slow-going and programs crashing were not a rare occurence.

Then again, my friend did DV editing using Final CUT Pro 3 using a $3000 Camera and I was definitely impressed with the finesse of the program, and his system was very smooth using OSX.

Even so, I have only compared the Engineering Programs and the PCs indded performed better. Don't bother contracdicting this because frankly I don't care.

As for the DV editing, my dads 1 ghz THunderbird does it flawlessly as well, but with a $100 sony DV camera so maybe there is no difference at all except for Final Cut Pro 3, to which I give its due credit.

Basically, PowerMac4Ever, please respond to my "sdram" statement.

Arguing OS's to the tune of Windows vs. OSX is just a wait of time because experiences are always biased to to preference.

I love linux more htan windows..but have XP on my main machine.

Why? You go figure it out...

EDIT: FOrgot...my DaD has a 1ghz Thunderbird..my bad

I think this pretty much confirms the study that showed Mac users to be more intelligent than PC users. Let me give it a go...

I believe it is as stable as XP.

I prefer the X86 setup because hardware is cheaper,

Most of the hardware is the same, but I know what you mean. Ill give you this one.

software is cheaper

freshmeat.net has plenty of free software.

and there is a lot more of it,

Most of the things I have tried compiling on Mac OS X work.

if i want to i can run Windows,

Virtual pc

Yellow Dog Linux

Working on a Mac PPC port.

Solaris x86 put out of its misery with v9.

OpenBSD and NetBSD also work on Mac PPC platform.

and whatever i would like on it... all of those on the same pc, and if i want to, all of them at the same time...

There are more choices with the PC... freedom of choice is something i value...

I have the same choices with my Mac.

I believe SGI used MIPS. I have plenty of software on my Mac, most of which cost a total of $0 USD. Your 5 button explorer might work on it, you should try it. I personally dont like LOTS of buttons on my mice (no more than 3) because of finger twitches :(

Lack of upgradability

Only part you cant upgrade is the mobo.

1 Button Mouse

Logitech mice are almost always Mac compatible.

No floppy drive ( need to buy one seperate )

Floppy what?

I like MacOS X better than anything Microsoft has ever released, but I use KDE so I'm happy. I like they way they look but that and OS X is the only thing I like about em :p

Single click button, I like to think I'm sophistocated enough to have two clickers on my mouse, wait, i actually have three, pluss a wheel, that must be damn confusing to mac users.

You'd get confused holding down ctrl and the mouse button wouldnt you? :)

Or plugging in a logitech 3 button wheel mouse. Its pretty tough.

Do people pay that much for the stupid hockey-puck mouse. I can't decide if those things are less useful as mice than they are as yo-yos. :D

The hockey puck mouse was phased out like 2 years ago when too many Canadians got confused (in that special way only they can) and broke too many of those mice.

Please stop with the hockey puck mouse crap. :)

I'd agree Apple (the company) sucks, and the hardware is rediculously overpriced. HOWEVER, it is the only computer that will run OS X. And OS X is a dream OS for geeks like me. Has the stability of BSD (based on it) and a GUI that puts GNOME or KDE to shame. I love how it keeps all it's settings in a little xml file for each app in the user's library/prefs folder. You can go right in those and poke around to your heart's content. You can also delete them if you screw them up and they get recreated on the fly. There is no idiotic registry that gets corrupted and is filled with unintelligible gibberish.

OS X is amazingly stable (never had a crash in the year I've used it-- not ONE. No conflicts, no driver issues, no bluescreens.)
Amazingly stable. Part of this is because they have a pretty tight handle regarding what goes into the machine (one could call this a disadvantage too). Typically, they're decked out from the factory (which also makes them expensive) and none of the hardware has "issues" with other components. When you burn a cd, it always works the exact same way every time. My XP box seems to choke when I do more than 6 things at once. The mac never seems to. I even have that serenescreen fish tank as my desktop pattern (using xBack). Anyone know if you can do that on an XP box (use an opengl screensaver as a desktop background?)

About the only things you can say bad about apple are the hardware and the idiotic marketing, they need desperately to switch to intel/amd and ditch the powerpc. They also need to fire all the marketing idiots. That switch ad campaign is for losers.

Anyway, my whole point was: if they made os X for intel, I guarantee you'd all install it in a second and quickly pee your pants after seeing how well it works. It gives XP a run for it's money and makes linux look sad.

Linux spanks OSX anyday. Just because you don't know how to use linux well doesn't mean OS X is superior.

Put some non-computer savvy person infront of a Mac running Mac OS X and then in front of a Linux machine. See which one is easier for them as a desktop. I like Mac OS X better, but I dont think its because I dont know how to use Linux well, I just think it makes an easier desktop OS. I wouldnt use it as a server though.

Stop buying closed source, proprietary software from companies that dont believe in open standards, or when they believe in such standards its because they can change them.
