Am I the only one that thinks the best part of this story is that an FBI agent said "lulz" aloud? Where is the audio?!

I think the real lesson here is STFU, and don't trust anyone. A mistake, and dishonor is how they got caught.

But they do it for the attention whoring aspect of it all. They *have* to tell other people what they did.

I meant more with their co-conspirators. You can make public announcements anonymously, but you need to watch what you say with people you "trust".

I echo these comments...

Imagine if these guys were actually disciplined and didn't do stupid stuff like 'give personal history' online to a screen name or 'go into a chat room' without using a proxy server...or any other the other dozen things that got them caught...

How close would the authorities be as far as catching these guys...I would presume not very far.

I certainly don't condone their actions because innocent people were affected by the majority of the shit they pulled...just stealing credit cards or identity theft is enough...

They might and I stress might have had good intentions, the way they went about it was 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

This will probably be a good case study for the next generation of hackers..a 101: how not to go to prison in 10 easy steps.

All done for the lulz

“They caught him and he was secretly arrested and now works for the FBI,” a source close to Sabu told FoxNews.com.
Sounds like the organization wasn't built to properly handle severe cases of infiltration or coercion. :hmm:
But that sort of stuff probably takes a lot of planning and extra logistics, and logistics isn't always sufficiently lulzy.

I can't believe how stupid these guys are, hacking from their own home? Wouldn't it be smarter to drive around and find some hapless wifi hotspot and go nuts from there, find another spot the next day and so forth?
Too much time spent as campers in CounterStrike.

I called this. Sooner or later the government would turn someone.
You can't fuck with their bankrollers and not expect to be retaliated.

well, it's got to be damn easy working as an informant for the FBI when you only communicate to your conspirators from your basement to them in their basement.

It's not like it was that easy for Donnie Brasco or guys like Pussy (in the Sopranos).

So have you changed your mind since you started working?

http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=21335660&postcount=20

If you don't like working for Gamestop, you could always go back to the Hampton near KSU. :\

The first part makes no sense. Sure. Hack the guys computers. That's eye for an eye, which is what I basically said in that post you referenced. So... ok?

I haven't worked for Gamestop for over a year, and even then it was a job I worked ~8 hours a month at part time. I've had my full time corporate job for years.

you should move to an island,

I would LOVE to live on an island with my only human physical contact being like once a month. That would be perfect.

but we all know how helpless and dependent on others you truly are.

Do we? What are you basing this on? Absolutely nothing? Figures, coming from you.

All: Sorry my opinions are extreme and different from yours. Well, not really, but sorry it apparently bothers you...

learn to hack, get job at FBI ... my god, what am I doing here!??

He does not work *for* the FBI he works *with* the FBI. Basically he took a plea, probably to avoid prison time. No doubt he copped to a felony and is still federally fucked.

they'll pull the grant funding your job after a few months and you are back looking for work, its not worth it...:p

I am however incredibly greatful they targeted STRATFOR as that place needed its laundry aired.

that IS the big problem with Anon for me, some of their targets/work is truly a public service to us regular schmoe's, other times it just wrong

the HBGary guy was a disservice and was basically frauding the government as a 'security contractor' that didnt know what he was doing

The Sabu dude is still pretty fucked:

Monsegur pleaded guilty in August to charges that included conspiracy to commit hacking, admitting he obtained dozens of credit card numbers online and gave them to others or used them to pay his bills. His lawyer, Philip L. Weinstein, declined to comment Tuesday.

His deal with prosecutors requires his full cooperation and testimony at any trial. In return, he gets leniency from a potential prison sentence of more than 120 years. He is free on $50,000 bail.

All he is getting is leniency on sentencing and will probably end up with 1 - 5 years in prison, not to mention it looks like he plead to multiple felony and misdemeanor counts.

My favorite is stuff like this:

"Anonymous is a hydra, cut off one head and we grow two back," read one defiant message posted to Twitter.

Yeah and if they break the law both new heads get arrested and the cycle continues as dumbasses who think they are in some shadow organization that operates above the law learn the hard way that they are just petty criminals who fucked their future up.

I think that like a lot of people, I'm pretty conflicted about LulzSec and Anonymous.

On one hand, they serve as a useful counter weight to tools like HBGary.

On the other hand, they also seem to do some rather random things.

Right now I'm reading Mitnick's book "Ghost in the Wires." And the three letter Federal Agencies are not coming off to well ...

Anyone have any opinions about the future of LulzSec and Anonymous?

It would seem if they are a truly distributed organization, they will just reorganize and reappear.

Kind of like when I lived in South Florida and every month the Feds would announce that they had taken down the "Cocaine Kingpin." But four to six weeks later, they would announce the same thing except with a different name.

Any opinions about the future?

I like Lulzsec and Anonymous. They throw a little anarchy in the world, and keep things shaken up.

I expect they'll be around for a long time to come. It helps that anyone can be Anonymous. Hackers have always been around, but the groups were more exclusive. Now someone can hack under the Anonymous banner, and have instant legitimacy with a recognizable name.

You associate "anonymous" with "legitimate"?

Anonymous barely a blip on the radar pre-2011. We'll see now every time some idiot decides to commit a felony under the guies of Anonymous how quick they get busted.

This shit isn't new. In my day it was MOD and LOD and all those guys went down just like Anonymous and lulzsec today. The only thing about Anonymous is they use the bullshit context of "hacktivism" to make it seem like they are legit and garner sympathy from dumb OWS types. At the end of the day they are petty felons who can't get laid in RL.

Are you autistic or something? You seriously can't parse the meaning of my words?! I'm not exactly writing high literature here :^S

I know exactly what you mean, which still does nothing to explain why you would associate a large group of hyperbolic kids with overactive senses of self-righteousness with "legitimacy".

Oh, I see. You have no problem with ME and my FAMILY being a casualty in your fake little war against anything and everything? Maybe the world wont be so scary when you move out of your moms basement, but until then, DIAF.

He probably has no problem being a casualty himself. I know I don't. I'm ok with everything crumbling down around me and the floor giving way below me. It happens, waah. Americans have it to good, we forget exactly how miserable struggling to live really is.

I do have it good. I purchased a nice house with a floor that wont give way beneath me and walls that wont fall in on me, and I don't want some little shit hacker in his mothers basement trying to fuck up my life just for the "lulz". The "lulz" will be them getting their ass pounded in prison.

Anonymous will never die. It can be anyone. You are anonymous, I am anonymous, we're all anonymous.

Lol.

Did you buy into their douchbaggery nonsense that was disguised as a "movement" just like a lot of other idiots? They went from one "idea" to another like it's the cool thing to do, which proves there never was any movement. They were a bunch of teenage-20 something year old Internet trolls who decided it would be fun to screw up a bunch of stuff while they throw around a few fancy words with some videos to get the "I don't belong but I wanna feel accepted so I'll join a cause" lamers. They trolled so hard and hooked people so easily that they actually had people out in real life on Wall Street. They bought into a fake movement like mindless sheep. lol
