A small overnight UPS package arrived this morning that had what sounded like a medicine bottle inside. I opened it up and it turned out to be a prescription bottle from AMD with 28 doses of Verdetrol 1Ghz.

😵

I would rather AMD didn't spend money on stupid stunts like this and their lame attempts at viral marketing, and instead use the money to trim the prices of all of their cards by 10%+. How much does a marketer make? Take that salary (plus benefits and healthcare costs etc.) and give it back to the gamers!

Agree, however, if that arrived at my house of course my opinion would be different, and my hunger would be satisfied haha.

Actually, I just showed it to my GF and she said it's kind of cute and witty. I gave her that "WTF you talking about" look and she said "what, if they had better products out this would be well received." HAHA.

Let it be noted, my girlfriend is still hardcore nVidia fangirl.

That ain't food, dude. The XFX videos and marketing stuff like this are a waste of resources. Dropping prices or making better cards for the same prices would do more to help sales.

AMD and NV aren't selling Coke. Graphics card speeds can be quantified. You can play games about which games to benchmark, but ultimately they should stand on their own merits.

I was only kidding about the hunger. I still agree with you haha. AMD should be focusing on making their product more appealing through performance and cost, not, as my girlfriend said, cute and witty.

If I were involved in this marketing stunt I'd have made the pills red (AMD color anyways) and then some how tied this into it:

Haha.

Because the $20 they had to spend on this is so much money. They got their name and product out there and forum posts made about it so it's easily $20 well spent. Also have a sense of humor and appreciate a campy joke for what it is.

If you want a price cut you'll need to tell nVidia to hurry up and ship their new stuff. AMD has the top cards right now and probably won't have any competition for at least another month. When nVidia were in that position they cranked their prices up too.

LoL...

People did say AMD had to improve their marketing and that's just what their doing. Intel sold a crap ton of P4's cause they "partly" had better marketing. So if this small stunt gets their name across to more people (a lot of people who buy graphics cards don't look at benchmarks) then it's a success and it's money well spent. They should sell a few more cards to fund their R&D.

Apple do this kind of thing too. It works for them. Although not as gimmicky though, but still cheesy.

Costs way more than $20. Unless you think they pay their "genius" marketers $0. Or produce their youtube videos for free. Fire half the marketing department and use the money to hire driver writers to stomp bugs or something.

And I HAVE been telling NV to hurry up. Not that they listen to me. 🙂

verdetrol, can be translated to "green troll" 😉

I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. Verde in spanish means green as in an unripe banana type green, then the trol. The pills are green as well.

No idea if they are trying to troll their competition, but it looks that way.

From this thread I have learnt that 'marketing' is a useless department and shouldn't exist in any corporation....

Someone's really clever.

/sarcasm

I could be wrong, but this kind of marketing doesn't seem effective to me. The GPU market is very competitive like the CPU market; it's not that hard to compare NV vs. AMD chips, and some lame attempts at viral youtube videos and jokey bottles isn't going to move the needle on sales. Maybe spending more money on writing better drivers or on engineers might. Would you buy a Bulldozer for gaming, on account of a "funny" ad? As for the GPU bottle, I doubt anyone who sees that will NOT also see the reviews of NV and AMD cards and the recommendations therein, which are based on performance comparisons. GPUs are not soft drinks or clothes or something else with a high degree of subjectivity or that can be advertised as a "lifestyle choice" or something.

You'd be surprised how subjective people are when they but GPU's or CPU. You would not believe how many FX8150's we sell cause they are 8core and the 2500k is "only" a quad core. A large number of people also buy AMD cards with them cause they think they will have a faster system if the had an AMD cpu with an AMD graphics card. Those are also they same people who are impossible to talk some sense into.

My pc must be even better because I am 100% amd. My pc has amd motherboard, amd processor and amd video card. you can just call me the amd man lol 😉

I think its cute, you can ask youself how well spent the $ on this is, but if its on the cheap side why not?.

The 7770 is supposed to be like 135-145mm^2, and be equal to the 6850 (rumors).
That has to be a money maker for them. So why not spend a few $ to get some attention on what is probably gonna be the card that overall makes them the most profits.

So it says here the 7770 will be slower than the 6850. I'm sorry, but what the hell kind of progress is that? I can understand the 7900 series, they are the 2 fastest GPU's on the market and demand a premium, but the 7770 being slower than the 6850 for what looks to be the same price. Now I think this is ridiculous.

I'm not looking at the market anymore, but I'm not happy with this. The 5770 might have been underwhelming, but it was as fast as the 4870 (AMD's second fastest card) and faster than the 4890 in newer games, used half the power and had DX11. The 7770 better use like 65W and be faster in DX11 games.

It also doesn't help that nvidia have had no answer to the 3yr old 5770 since it's launch.

I was hoping that the 7770 would atleast be as fast as the 6870 not the 6850 which ive already owned which was about the same performance as my GeForce GTX 460 1gb.
