RedDawn is usually the first in line to make fun of nerds and geeks.
If he liked it, it's got to be good.

If fantasy isn't your thing, that's fine.
But anyone who looks at this trilogy objectively has to see the absolute genius of Peter Jackson's work.

The greatest tribute to this series is the fact that the real Tolkien fans who grew up reading his books really liked the movies.
People who are big fans of a book are usually the one's who have very high expectations and are the most critical of the movie.

I think anybody who says that these are the worst movies ever made is just saying that to get some attention. Just to be against mainstream opinion, just to be against 'the establishment.' You may not like that type of genre, or you may not favor that film as opposed to others. However, just to blindly say they are the worst movies is just plain ignorant.

Regardless of how much money it made, it is, IMO, a nearly perfect trilogy and transfer from book to screen.

Anybody that has seen my taste in movies should know that I don't jump on movie bandwagons. 😉

By your logic, all of us who grew up on Star Wars should be talking about how great Attack of the Clones was. I mean after all, we were just waiting and begging for another star wars movie for years and years.

Instead, we all admit that it sucked beyond belief.

As I said, those who are big fans of a book are usually the most critical when it is made into a movie because we have high expectations.
LOTR wasn't perfect, but it was far better than anyone could have imagined and easily the best fantasy movie ever.

What's so great about sliced bread? I have a fvcking bread knife.

Ah well, I'm a big fan of Tolkien so I'll actually address your question even though I know you are trolling. The Lord of the Rings films are based on one of the most celebrated series of books in fantasy literature and dare I say the English language. It's a wonderful story told well and I urge everyone who expresses any interest in the films to read them if they haven't already. The story has become part of our culture and dismissing it as "geeky" smacks more of blind rebellion than intelligent criticism. I hope you can appreciate the fact that rejecting something simply because so many people embrace it is an ignorant and juvenile reaction.

Yes, there are some big words there so I'll translate it for you. LotR = good. You = dumb.

Actually, quote me where I say I'm "rejecting something simply because so many people embrace it". That's very pompus and pretentious of you to assume something that isn't said or stated. Therefore, 'You = dumb'.

Just because you took personal offense to the nerd/geek comment, sounds more like a personal problem than anything else. Don't go putting words in others mouths, or try to read between the lines, because you just aren't smart enough. Please don't hurt yourself. To spell it out for you, I saw the movies (downloaded them after seeing all the hype), and I personally thought they sucked and were extremely pointless. Now, put on your horn-rimmed glasses, make sure the tape in the middle is strong and secure, and go back to enjoying your Tolkien novel. 😛

Pointless? How exactly? They were adapted from the books and tell a story. How is that pointless? No more pointless that any movie.

Could be that I didn't read the novels, therefore, the movie meant absolutely nothing to me.

Then it's not a valid argument and still doesn't make it pointless. It still tells a story like most other movies. If it's not your type of story, that's fine... but that doesn't make it "pointless".

Techinically I thought they were groundbreaking, and I'm sure a lot of people put a lot of hard work into it. But IMO a lot of special effects and a classic story don't make a great movie. Personally I'd pick a well made low budget independent film over LOTR anyday.

I love low budget movies, one of my favorit movies is "Gas, Food, Lodging", for example.

But I don't believe that just because a movie cost a lot to make and has a lot of special effects it can't be a good movie.

LOTR, especially the extended versions, are as good as any movie I've ever seen.

I also haven't read any of the books.

Anyone else here who hasn't read the books or seen the movies...

...at least twice, including extras and appendices?

Don't forget the Leprechaun series 🙂

If you didn't like it, that's fine. Calling fans nerds and geeks because of it negates any mature form of argument you want to conduct, so you shouldn't necesarily call people on being "immature" when clearly, you started it.

It's my opinion that the people hating on the LOTR movies have zero or very little imagination.

Or are attention whores.

I've waited 25 years to see Tolkien's work made into a movie. It was said it could never be done and, after seeing Bakshi's failed attempt back in the 70s, I was inclined to believe that this was true. Jackson's work on Tolkien's literary classic is beyond the expectations of any fan of the books and, for those that haven't read the books but enjoy fantastic movies, the trilogy stands on its own as one of the best ever brought to the big screen.

I prefer each of those movies to LOTR. Funny, because I have the dvd's of all the films you mentioned. Oh wait, I'm not supposed to like 'popular' movies like Jaws and Psycho and The Godfather.

Out of those 3 only Godfather had a good sequel.

You ask 10 random people walking down the street what kind of person they associate with LOTR, and without a doubt they'll mention pre-pubescent boys and Dungeons and Dragons. Welcome to Nerdville.

Well, at least it did win 11 Oscars... When was the last time the Red Sox won anything? 😛

but but but... LOTR had a $300 million payroll! they cheated! how are the poor sox with just $110 million payroll to compete! it isn't fair!

I think this thread is dumb, but I too agree the movies are annoyingly popular, and watching the academy awards or whatever was totally dumb cause they won in every single nomination... blah.
