that's like saying Backstreet Boys is good just because they sold so many albums....

Anyways, i never watched the movie, so i cannot say much about it, but everyone i know that watched it seemed to like it.

or it means they should win a grammy award.

two of the biggest grossing movies of all time Titanic and ROTK both have 11 oscars.
if anyone wants to shout robbery, look at the year Titanic won Best Picture.
Best Picture my ass, LA Confidential was the best picture of 97.
you make enough money for hollywood and you'll be rewarded, ie Titanic, Ron Howard.

I don't like them either.

I rented the Two Towers this weekend and I couldn't watch more than 30 minutes. I don't get it either.

So those that have nothing to say making idiotic comparisons to baseball and the Boston Red Sox?

What was so appealing about this movie that made it worth 11 oscars?

CChaos: Congratulations, you made me an email sig :D

The movie had a good story, was very well directed, had a flat out awesome soundtrack that did nothing but support the scenes. The movie had a mix of action, drama, and a hint of comedy. It was good all around. Many movies just hit one angle. I love Superrtroopers, and it's one of my favorite movies, but I don't think it's worthy to win any awards.

Boston, why do so many people like it? I personally think that it is one of the worst cities in America. Why are there so many yuppies who think the city is the greatest thing since sliced bread? I fail to see what the attraction is.

Notice how vague that is. If you have problems with the film, what are they? Simply engaging in ad hominem against people who like it doesn't tell anyone anything. The way you talk it seems like Peter Jackson pissed in your breakfast cereal or something.

I haven't seen any of the movies.

I also haven't read any of the books.

Anyone else here who hasn't read the books or seen the movies?

Techinically I thought they were groundbreaking, and I'm sure a lot of people put a lot of hard work into it. But IMO a lot of special effects and a classic story don't make a great movie. Personally I'd pick a well made low budget independent film over LOTR anyday.

So... Incredible special effects/cinematography and a classic story doesn't make a great movie?

This is an idiotic comment, I don't care what kind of tastes you have. LOTR's production values alone put it above countless other movies that only a crazy person would say are better than LOTR.

FWIW, I think the movie is way better than Titanic, another movie that got 11 Oscars.

I might of thought the same if I hadn't of read the Trilogy years before. That said, it was pretty true to the book and Jackson did a great job of interpreting it. It completely blows away any other SciFi/Fantasy Series that I have seen.

Hi,

The answer to your question is plain an simple. People have waited a long long time, very long time for someone to make movies out of those GREAT books. In 1978, Ralph Bakshi have failed to reprodure the gradeur of the books. The movie stops at the Battle of Helm's Deep.

Many years later, a man have decided to make movies out of that trilogy (even if in fact there is 6 books). People saw that man as a God, a savior (their savior). Being so happy to have a real, "complete" movie version of LoTR, they now fail to see the flaws in them (and we know there is MANY, much more than you think! The Nit Picker's Guide to the Lord of the Rings ). When you point out that this or this sucks and that it should have been prevented, they say as a defense this: "It's a movie! It CAN'T be like the books (often followed by an insult)".

My 2 cents.

"Go home Sam!!". Yeah right, Jackson REALLY understands the friendship between Frodo and Sam.

There will always be "losses" when a book is transformed into a movie, and Jackson often made very neat and thoughtful decisions while wrestling LOTR onto the big screen. That said, I agree with you that Jackson took many unnecessary liberties while turning the books into movies -- your final example one of the more grevious.

The simple answer to the original question is that the biggest fans of the LOTR movies are those of us who read and loved the books first!

I'm sure Jackson just felt the need to piss off fans.

Easily the best trilogy ever. When taken as one movie probably one of the best movies ever. Its about time that Oscar recognized it. Congratulations and thank you Peter Jackson and team.
