Lost my beer vending job for not selling to a preggo.

Good, mind your own business. Having a drink or two after the first trimester isn't that big of a deal anyways.

Edit - I guess I'm not sure if you should've lost your job, but really it's none of your business, it's perfectly legal for a pregnant woman to buy a beer.

oh, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe late in 3rd trimester is generally safe for alcohol--especially weak-ass 4% domestic beer

I have no idea whether this was her 1st or 10th beer. As I posted earlier, the number is irrelevant...I didn't want to be a part of something that I found to be wrong.

fuck it. good for you OP, as you did what you feel was right (and it didn't harm anyone)

you have a real job, anyway.
...and I wonder what would happen if you shared your story with the local news?

:hmm:

It did screw up some people's night out though...with people not going out this much this is hardly a great battle to play.

Not to mention the baseball franchises being on death's door.

Asshats like this may just be the final nail in the coffin.

What's next? "Sorry babe, you are already 30lbs overweight so no hotdog or pretzel for you. YOU ARE OUTTA HERE!"

Yeah most studies show that light alcohol consumption, even from the 2nd trimester on, doesnt seem to do much to the fetus

Then I guess it is a good thing you lost your job. Your morals are irrelevant when it comes to being a beer vendor. I don't think that's the right job for you honestly. I'm glad that's not your only source of income.

Screwed up their night? they chose to make a scene.

My wife's OB has always said it's ok to have a glass of wine every now and then once you're in your 3rd trimester, so I believe you're right.

If you believed abortion was a right and sent them to another OB who would perform an abortion because you didn't feel right about it, you would be a hypocrite.

so where do you stand those devout catholic pharmacists who didn't dispense birth control? they wouldn't be hypocrites by your definition.

this is a scary and slippery slope. i'm not sure how i feel about your situation. i don't think its harmful to not serve someone a beer, at least not in the same way that i consider those pharmacists that wouldn't dispense birth control to those teenagers. but there are parallels here.

yeah, I remember some studies a few years back recommending yeasty beers to pregnant women b/c of all the excellent B vitamins.

Knowing the consequences? I think I would've found a reason to direct them to another vendor (there are alot of them, easy to find), without stirring up a scene. I would feel good in that I didn't serve her the beer, and I wouldn't lose my job.

I wish life had a save state/reload sometimes.

I'm gonna suggest again that you go to your boss in a day or two, and quietly ask to be rehired. He may have just overreacted in the stress of the moment, while being personally faced by the "outrage" of the couple.

OP, I feel your discomfort over this situation. You did a commendable job being like any ordinary citizen. Think this is one of the reasons why this country is going down the shithole... laws have a priority over common sense.

I think you could've manipulated the argument better and asked the questions about the woman and her unborn fetus instead, like ask her if she was fine with her child developing FAC and so on. Leave her to argue over her own logic, it would have dug in any sane pregnant mom... but you took it passively and let her pin all the blame on you instead. :/

I would think the slot is filled almost instantly. afaik, it's a rather desirable ballpark job. You get to tbe in the ballpark all day, and you make the best sales slinging beer.

I think serious ballpark people work those positions for decades, if they can keep them.

Nice, 11 pages long yet no parodies. 🙁

I can see it going either with a "America, fuck yea" theme by being preggers at a baseball game and buying booze or saying it was only a fat chick and the person wouldn't sell to her because of it.

Wrong zippy. A vendor has no legal discretion to discriminate against an entire class of people who have a legal right to drink. He was selling beer in a public place and he had absolutely no right to change the laws on his own nanny-state whims. You think he'd get away with refusing to serve beer to all women? How about refusing to serve blacks? How about if he refused to serve anyone over the age of 60 because they're weaker than normal people and can't handle it? If you believe OP has a right to pick and choose who gets beer and who doesn't you're as stupid as he is.

I live in Arizona, and I go to restaurants and bars all the time that have a sign clearly stating "We have the right to refuse service to anyone." So, clearly, you're the wrong and stupid one here.

True, but they can't discriminate against a group like that is what he is saying.

It would be like saying they can refuse service to a certain race.

It's one thing to refuse service to a random jerk or a drunk but this is another thing.

I applaud you and think you did the right thing. I look at it the same way bartenders have to look at someone who appears drunk. If she was drunk and wanted a beer and you sold it to her, you could have been liable had she was killed or killed anyone on the way home. Is 2 beer gonna make her kid a retard, probably not (sounds like genetics will take care of that), but who says the drunk is gonna hit anyone on the way home either. Hell, I'd call a local news station and see if they want to run the story. You know damn well the Reds wont want the negative publicity and will dump you dumbass boss and hire you back.
