if your manager/boss/owner of the shop gives him any kind of break i would talk to them and use everything i had, to convince them otherwise

Or just pretend you are playing with a camera as he is walking in and snap a picture.

Something similar to this happened to me. After the 2nd reinstall of everything I made a image of the drive and created a bootable CD. Everytime since I just pop the CD in and walk away. Of course still charging full price. :)

hook me up and I'll kick some cash your way

This can be roughly translated to: I am the cheapest son of a b!tch you've ever met and once you agree to this pact with the devil I will not only hold it over your head I will incessantly whine and needle you for freebies for the rest of your natural life.

your management needs to grow some balls, this would never fly were i work. you have a problem unrelated to what we did or you messed with the computer yourself = $59 diagnostic charge.

Wow, I meant to suggest that early in the thread :)
An extra few minutes of your time saves a ton of time with repeat customers.

my personal favorites are those that want to sound smart by calling a computer by any random piece of hardware inside. for example. my "modem won't turn on", "the cd-roms on my hard drive aren't working," "the memory just has a blank screen." and even when you correct them they still insist on calling it what they were calling it. "miss its actually just called a computer, the modem is just a part inside that lets you use your dial up internet". "excuse me i know what i'm taking about, i keep pressing the eject button on my modem and its not doing anything"

LOL I work in tech support and some lady told me that her monitor was hooked up correctly because "the monitor cable thingy is plugged directly into the hard drive". :)

pff...ppff:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: this just made me cry...seriously man, he doen't deserve such a computer. take it from him and tell him that the computer is worth the amount of money he owes you and to buy a sucky dell so they can deal with his problems.

I have a friend who likes to tinker with his machine, and call me when it invariably screws up... to his credit, he hasn't duplicated his mistakes, but I'll be damned if he didn't call me three or four times a day over a two week period when he built his first system...

This is why I try and avoid home users as clients, but unfortunately, they are a necessary evil... :D

you need to stick firm with hours of employment and what not

if its 6:01, the doors are locked and he needs to bring it in tomarrow, no exceptions

if he threatens to go some where else how is that bad? sounds like you are hardly making any money off of him as it is with all the discounts

At the very least, even if your boss doesn't have a spine, tell him you will NOT work on any equipment from this guy anymore. He gives you grief, acts like a jerk, and screws up his own equipment, let someone else deal with it.

How to deal with an idiot on the phone:

Great quote here, when dealing with a problem customer:
"You do that. You can explain how your son and I engaged in a legal transaction of a fair value to both parties and that you attempted to extort me. That'll go over well. If you don't mind, I have other customers to serve."

(the store is completely empty and silent at this point, no music at all, and the TV wasn't on).

Jesus Christ, how much has this guy spent on parts?

I loved the part about how he tried to get YOU to load up his XP copy, but "don't register it!!!!!!"
