slightly OT: One of my friend's has been in and out of prison all his adult life, and he claims the worst 6 months he spent 'At Her Majesty's Pleasure' was on a container ship which was a makeshift prison, docked somewhere off the coast of England.

We should do this on a larger scale. Stop old oil tanker getting scrapped and instead turn them into prisons and drop anchor in the middle of The Atlantic.

Doing 6 months on one of them would feel like 6 years. Cold and damp with massive waves to keep them company.

Seems like it's died down in London but like a cancer it's spread to other cities.

It's shameful to see this stuff broadcast around the world. Other countries are protesting, fighting and dying for a better world and we're fighting over laptops and plasmas.

But still...for the most part we are a United Kingdom, just.

My wife's fam is British, and her grandparents talk how many of their friends have grandsons and daughters that have no jobs, no ambitions, uneducated and just hang out around the town doing nothing all day and night. And not just in the way all grandparents complain about today's kids. Its a real problem.

Visiting them there you def see all the chavs around. Seem like a lot of the looters and hooligans are the same people. Hoodies, caps, sneakers and track suits as far as the eye can see.

My impression is they are pretty lazy and spoiled and need to get their asses kicked and put to work. There are all sorts of reasons that a large part of a generation has gone that they will surely get debated, but the solution seems clear enough. I hope the police go in and crack some heads.
And this is coming from a left leaning American.


IOW.. They are the same as the ghetto trash we have here, with the big difference being we think it all has to do with race and the "scars of slavery" just because these people tend to be overrepresented by a few minority groups. Most those chavs are white kids in the UK. British apologists claim its all due to classism.

Ghetto/Chavs is not a race but a culture and lifestyle.
Similarities:

• Live in urban areas or run down industrial cities? Check
  
• Be uneducated, unemployed and can barely speak the native language? Check
• Have no ambitions or goals in life, other than getting girls pregnant? Check

• Cause of much of the theft and crime in your shitty neighborhood? Check

I went shopping this morning in Lewisham (SE London) which had some riots last Monday,I only saw one McDonald's window broken and a betting shop(both boarded up) however McDonald's and all the other shops including open market were open for business as usual,it was actually a nice atmosphere (nice blue warm day as well)with people going about their business,all the roads/streets were clean as well.


I did not see any police ,however they were not needed since it was very calm,I bumped into a female friend I knew from college days that I had not seen for 2 years and we chatted about a few things including the riots.

Very calm in London at the moment,I think the worst is over.

I do hope the courts give all those looters etc.... harsher sentences.

I'm just waiting for the UK to sentence a father to life or years in prison for defending his family from a group of rioters with a baseball bat or something. It'll happen sooner or later. Seeing the situation in England makes me even more thankful for the 2nd amendment. Guess what happened during the Rodney King riots here? The Korea-town shop owners loaded up and had the rioters facing down tactical carbines when the cops were overwhelmed. Korea-town, as a result had the least damage of any affected neighborhood IIRC. You won't see that in the UK unfortunately.

Looks like the sentencing is getting bumped up to the Crown Court (from the magistrates court) so hopefully that will mean some decent jail sentences.

The people who are saying that these protesters are just doing this 'for fun' are a little out of touch with reality. These people are of a social class that has been decimated by the ruling political order. Even the former London mayor gets it:

This is similar to Arab revolutions where the youth rose up after high unemployment (e.g., one of the main causes brought up for Egypt). American politicians better look at their own policies. We saw a little unrest in Philadelphia. Unemployment is very high among the youth in the US. We could very well see similar protests in the US.
