LOL: Forbes Slams Acura

What went wrong? It's just hard to score in the luxury market when you refuse to do an eight-cylinder engine, wear undistinguished styling and don't offer a rear-wheel-drive car. Acura's absurd system for naming its cars doesn't help either.

Hehe. I find it hard to get behind a car name like RSX or TSX or MDX. I personally prefer names rather than alphabet soup. Even "3-Series" sounds better than TL to me though. I agree about not having RWD too. They really dropped the ball with that. Even their big ass RL is still FWD (and also about 6-7 years old). Booooooooooooooooooo!

I like what Infiniti is doing with their lineup. Their cars are markedly different than Nissans. Acuras on the other hand always turn out looking/feeling/being equipped like tricked out Hondas. Infiniti's move to RWD should be a signal to Acura. And for god's sake, make a f*&king V8 engine. Infiniti does, Lexus does it...

Infiniti has three RWD car platforms (Q45, M45, FM chassis)
Lexus has three (IS, GS, LS)
Acura ain't got jack sh!t

I happen to be a big fan of the Acura line. They make simple, yet classy cars. Nothing more, nothing less 🙂

Well, I really dont think Acura competes in the luxury market. I would consider luxury market to be $50,000+ cars, and I think Acura only has one car that hits that mark, and it is in a class by itself.

Acura is more the upscale middle class Honda market. Everyone who bought a Honda and loved it, and now makes a little more money and wants a little nicer car, but loves the Honda feel.

I agree 🙂

Uh, hello? NSX anyone?

Acura's absurd system for naming its cars doesn't help either.

I don't see how Lexus's IS, ES, GS, etc.. "system" is any better.

I agree with your comments too. If anything, Lexus has a confusing naming scheme...............

The Acura RL is a $46,000 POS FWD 225HP slugboat 4-speed auto craptastic piece of metal. It's the "Buick" of Japanese luxury sedans

Uh, hello? NSX anyone?

The NSX is not a luxury car and does not have an 8 cylinder engine.

The NSX is a 13 year old supercar with a facelift. HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hardly "state of the art" anymore.

I find Lexus' naming system to be much better and in line with BMW's. IS300, GS300/GS430, LS430. At least you get a sense of the model name and engine displacement just like BMW's 330i/325i or 530i/540i or 745i/760i, etc.

There's a sense of consistency with BMW and Lexus names.

Well dammit, the Honda drivers are going to need something to drive after they retire.

with all the high school kiddies driving integras around i've always through about em as higher end normal cars, not luxury.

Is it just me or does all the more luxury cars like the Lexus, Benz, BMW, Audi, Acura, Volvo, Infiniti...etc, all have simple letters and numbers to indicate their models? As oppose to economic cars like Honda, Nissan, VW, Dodge, Toyota, Ford...etc all have real names for their cars.

Infiniti's model names, save the QX4 are also consistent with engine displacement.

a) The author said Acura doesn't offer a RWD car. Which is false. Very false. How old the NSX is is irrelevant..although I do'nt know of too many mid-engined, rear wheel drive car with an all aluminum body out there.

b) Acura's line up is labeled with the displacement as well. 3.2 TL, 3.2 CL..how is this any worse than GS300/IS300?

Actually, the author says that Acuara doesn't offere an 8 cylinder RWD luxury car with distinctive styling, which is true.

A) The article is talking about Acura luxury cars. The NSX is not a luxury car; it's a sports car/exotic.
B) The only cars in the Acura lineup with a displacement in the name is the 3.5 RL and the 3.2 TL, 3.2 CL. Everything else is just alphabet soup. There is NO consistency across the lineup in naming.

That would be either a Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, Audi, etcetc... not an Acura which is Forbes' point. Acura is the wussiest of the Japanese pseudo-brands anywho. The TL and CL are really both "Accords", RL is junk... NSX is retiring and actually pretty slow for such an expensive car from the factory, the RSX and upcoming TSX are both no more luxurious than an S2000 or an old Prelude.

But so long as Joe Consumer is duped into buying the superiority of the Acura brand... Honda will make money. And lots of people buy into the Acura brand now... my friend was so proud of his 260hp TL TypeS... till he rode in my $6k 7yr old POS.

With the exception of the RSX, I'd take Honda's over Acura just about anyday and save a boat load of $$$.

I'd take an Accord Sedan (newer platform, 240HP engine) over a TL
I'd take an Accord Coupe over a CL
I'd take a Pilot over a MDX

I agree except I would take a TL-S over the new Accord Sedan. I think the TL-S looks pretty sharp and the Accord Sedan is fugly, especially the a$$.
